Re: [Soekris] Dying net6501 servers

2016-02-28 Thread Robert Guerra
I too have suffered the RLOD too. Given my needs, I replaced the router
with a Turris Router <https://www.turris.cz/en/> . Its not as powerful,
but has far better support and good enough for my needs.

Re: [Soekris] Network content monitoring on Net6501 - any, suggestions?

2012-09-26 Thread Robert Guerra
In regards to Snort running on the Net6501 on PfSense 2.1 (details below), I
have been using it for a while.

2.1-BETA0 (i386)
built on Thu Sep 20 13:34:11 EDT 2012
FreeBSD pfsense.pvt 8.3-RELEASE-p4 FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p4 #1: Thu Sep 20

root@snapshots-8_3-i386.builders.pfsense.org:/usr/obj./usr/pfSensesrc/src/sys/pfSense_wrap.8.i386
 i386

I do seem to have an issue in that it runs for a while, and then terminates
quite unexpectedly most of the time. This is quite annoying as i'm keen to have
Snort be able to inspect traffic and generate alerts and block IPs for my users.

Any suggestions on what might be causing the premature termination of Snort and
ways to fix it would be - well... highly appreciated...

Have you or other members of the list compiled pfsense 2.1 from source so as to
generate the Soekris 6501 kernel extensions?

If not, might there be someone on the list that could help me with that?

Re: [Soekris] Installing pfSense on a net6501

Andrew,

Might I suggest you post your PfSense install docs on the Soekris Wiki as well.
It is a great resource and might be easier to find there for those who are
working to install it.

You must have misunderstood my original question - I've been able to get 2.01
working, in fact i've posted several posts related to that effect.

My question is how did you upgrade from 2.01 to 2.1. What is the preferred URL
to use for the upgrade.

Thanks

Robert

Re: [Soekris] confused about installing pfSense on net6501

2012-03-01 Thread Robert Guerra
Make sure you are using a version of the pfSense installer that works well with
a serial console, as is the case with Soekris Devices.

Here's where I downloaded the image:

http://files.chi.pfsense.org/jimp/
http://files.chi.pfsense.org/jimp/pfSense-memstick-serial-2.0.1-RELEASE-i386.img.gz

- I then plugged in the USB drive to my mac.
- Then I used a combination of gzcat and dd to write the downloaded image to
the USB
(ref http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/HOWTO_Install_pfSense#Mac_OS_X )

  gzcat pfsense-embedded.img.gz | dd of=/dev/disk[n] bs=16k

(where n = the drive # corresponding to your USB drive)

- unmount the USB drive from your PC
- connect up the serial cable to your PC
- load drivers (if needed) to get the serial cable to work
- Start up your soekris, and change the default connection speed to 9600 N1
- Reboot the device
- Set your serial terminal program to 9600 N1
- connect the USB drive to the external USB connector on your Soekris
- Watch for control-P to be displayed, then press it on your PC . This will
bring the Soekris into terminal mode
- Type - boot 81 - to have the soekris boot from the USB drive
- The PfSense installer when then start...

I don't know the FreeBSD/pfSense boot process particularly well,

the serial console. Look for a boot-loader parameter to adjust this.

Re: [Soekris] confused about installing pfSense on net6501

2012-02-29 Thread Robert Guerra
I too had a bit of a hard time getting pfSense installed on a net6501.

I couldn't get the PXE methods to work using Parallels on my Mac, so then
proceeded to try running the installer on a bootable USB . it worked well, but
required that I use a more modern USB stick. With that, the installation went
well.

let me share with you the thread on the PfSense forum as well as the URL to my

 Hi there,

I just got two net6501 boxes and I'd like to install pfSense on them.
I'm new to both pfSense and Soekris hardware, so please bear with me.
I tried at least three methods, with various degrees of success.

 Method 1: PXE install

I first tried to use PXE to do the install. I have a small machine
that runs dnsmasq as DHCP and TFTP server. I downloaded the
pfSense-2.0.1-RELEASE-i386.iso.gz and installed the contents of the
file in a directory accessible to the TFTP server. I'm serving the

 Method 2: nanobsd install

On a Mac machine I put the contents of
 pfSense-2.0.1-RELEASE-2g-i386-nanobsd.img.gz on a 2GB memory stick. I
placed the stick in the internal USB slot where it's recognized just
 fine:

 Controller Bus#02, Device#06, Function#00: 02 Ports, 01 Devices
  Port-00: Hard Disk, INTEL SSDSA2CT040G3
  Port-01: No device detected

Soekris USB Expansion ROM ver. 1.01 20111203

 81: USB 01 Single Flash ReaderXlt 997-64-63 2011 Mbyte

When I type 'boot 81' I get 'Missing operating system'

Method 3: Install pfSense on hard drive on a different machine

I installed pfSense on a machine with screen and keyboard and selected
the embedded kernel. When I plug the hard drive back in, I do get past
the initial loader stage, but then the screen is garbled. I do set the
serial to 9600 8N1 as pfSense is supposed to use that once it boots.

What am I doing wrong in my attempts? I'd prefer to install over PXE,
but I'd love to install through other means as well.

 Thanks,
 Ovidiu

[Soekris] Soekris 6501 as a Wireless Access Point / Advice requested

2012-01-04 Thread Robert Guerra
Dear List,

Happy New Year!

I just bought a Soekris 6501/50 with a 1 Slot Standard Case a few days ago and
would like to configure it as a Wireless Access Point to replace the failing
Linksys Wifi router I have now.

If possible i'd like to run PfSense as the OS and use a compatible wireless
card . Below is a list of options i've come across.

Wireless Card options:

1. Ubiquiti SR71-E PCI Card 802.11a/n 802.11b/g/n (802.11a/n 5GHz, 802.11b/g/n
2.4GHz)

http://store.netgate.com/Ubiquiti-SR71-E-PCI-Card-80211an-80211bgn-P309C29.aspx

 Mini PCI-E to PCI-E adapter

MP2A with ANT2458Q5P (2.4/5.8GHz Rubber Duck Antenna)
http://www.hwtools.net/Adapter/MP2A.html
http://www.bplus.com.tw/PDF/Compatibility_List.pdf

2. Atheros AR9280 AR5BDT92 PCIe Desktop WLAN Card Lenovo Antenna
http://www.amazon.com/Atheros-AR9280-AR5BDT92-Desktop-Antenna/dp/B0062VCL80

Will the setup I've described worked well? If not, would it be best to not add
a wireless card at all and just get off the shelf Wireless router (such as the
Linksys E2500) and connect it directly to the Soekris.

Look forward to people's comments.

regards

Robert
