RE: Can't start Softimage - system failure

2016-01-12 Thread Morten Bartholdy
Interesting - this actually worked. I still can't start Soft on the usual
account, so I guess I will have to proceed with deleting it and rename the
new working one. Lots of crap to reestablish though. Bummer.

It would be really nice to know how it can become corrupted like this. Last
thing I did before it broke was exit Softimage without closing the scene I
had been working on.

Thanks Sven.

Bizarre that different user works, but not renaming the user prefs - as
effectively all that exists within the user is maybe a shortcut and the
prefs folders.

Re: Can't start Softimage - system failure

2016-01-12 Thread Morten Bartholdy
I reinstalled this morning - still no joy, so Svens user account trick got
me running again.

I had tried running it as admin, but that doesn't work either. I have only
previously run in to startup crashes that would be fixed by renaming prefs
- this one is new, and somewhat worrying.

Did you rename just the prefs folder, or did you rename the whole Softimage
folder for the user account (eg rename Softimage_2015_SP2
to Softimage_2015_SP2.bak for the problem user account) ?

My own approach to troubleshooting that would include using Process Monitor
to compare the startups of the two different user accounts.

Houdini procedural

2016-01-12 Thread Angus Davidson
Hi All

I am trying to track down a video. For the life of me I cannot remember where I
saw it.

Its a student project piece where one of the students uses Houdini to
procedurally model a town. I was fairly sure it was on cgpress.org but i just
cant seem to find it.

Anyone remember this.

What about trying to 'run as a admin' on the xsi.bat and/or setenv.bat file?
If that works, it's something in the user rights that got messed up
somewhere.

As an additional test to see what's going on?

Can you log into the workstation with a different user and start
softimage? Or create a new user and log in with that account to
test? If so, the "holzhammer method" would be to delete the non
working account and create a new one with the same name. IRRC I
had a similar problem (Softimage simply didn't start without a

position to kill the account. The workstation was fubar btw, so it
didn’t matter :)

2016-01-12 Thread Andres Stephens

There is a hidden folder in the system drive with a set of files that usually
don't get Uninstalled with SI and is not its preference and settings folder. It
contains license data I think. I had a similar error. But renaming or deleting
said folder fixed it (after reinstalling dozens of times and trying preference
wipes and everything which didn't work).
Its stored in the windows user. Maybe in Appdata.
I'll have to search again to remember which folder it was... *fuzzy brain*
