[spectre] FOLLY ANNOUNCES GROUND-BREAKING DIGITAL ARTISTS HANDBOOK

2008-02-06 Diskussionsfäden Taylor Nuttall

FOLLY ANNOUNCES GROUND-BREAKING DIGITAL ARTISTS HANDBOOK

folly has announced the completion of the first edition of an important
new project, the Digital Artists Handbook:
www.digitalartistshandbook.org http://www.digitalartistshandbook.org

The Digital Artists Handbook is a new, up to date, reliable and
accessible source of information that introduces artists to different
tools, resources and ways of working related to digital art. The
touchstone of this new compendium is free/libre open source software
(FLOSS) and technologies.

The Handbook has been edited by Marloes de Valk and Aymeric Mansoux of
GOTO10, a collective of international artists and programmers.

Creative Director Kathryn Lambert said folly are very excited to
announce our Digital Artists Handbook, which we hope will be an
indispensable resource for artists seeking an introduction to the world
of free and open source technologies. folly strongly believe that FLOSS
is an empowering, cost-effective and democratic way to introduce digital
art technologies to artists.

Building on the collaborative and accumulative nature of the web, the
Digital Artists Handbook will always be a work-in-progress, with new
articles being commissioned on an ongoing basis, and new fields explored.

The goal of the Handbook is to be a signpost, a source of practical
information and content that bridges the gap between new users and the
platforms and resources that are available, but not always very
accessible. The Handbook will be slowly filled with articles written by
invited artists and specialists, talking about their tools and ways of
working.

Kathryn Lambert said We're especially pleased that folly has worked
with a range of international artists and specialists who have shared
insight into their areas of expertise.

The digital artist handbook is brought to you by folly and has developed
out of ongoing consultation with artists working with technology, which
has shown a need for removing the barriers for artists to use digital
tools. The project is supported by Arts Council England.

You can support the Digital Artists Handbook and folly's work in general
by visiting folly's donate page. £185 would pay for the writing of a new
article for the Handbook by a world leader in their field, and whatever
you can give will be valued. So your support - however big or small -
can make a difference.

The artists and practitioners who participated in the first stage of
writing the Handbook are: Kristina Andersen, Frank Barknecht, Tom Betts,
Florian Cramer, Phil Chandler, Olga Goriunova, Kathryn Lambert, Olivier
Laruelle, Thor Magnusson, Nicolas Malevé, Aymeric Mansoux, Iman Moradi,
Jon Phillips, Tom Schouten, Marloes de Valk, Peter Westenberg, and Simon
Yuill.

[spectre] VELOCITY online

2007-10-27 Diskussionsfäden Taylor Nuttall

VELOCITY online

folly's VELOCITY festival is happening now, online and all around
Morecambe Bay. We're especially proud of our content on the web, which
reaches not just the Bay area but worldwide. Here are some of our
current successes

Artcast
=

ArtCast is folly's new ongoing series of podcasting programmes - a
platform for public access to new and innovative sound art. You can
listen on the web, or as a podcast!

For VELOCITY folly invited Sonic Arts Network to join us in the
selection of podcasts from an international open call. Hear submissions
- specially curated for VELOCITY - from artists working with sound,
experimental musicians and composers, writers and performance artists,
both locally and from across the world.

follyplay on Bebo

Building on the success of our follyplay events and Virtual Creatures
follyplay online experience, folly has launched a follyplay bebo page.
You can play with virtual games such as Fly Guy and Tiny Grow, and of
course, invite your friends!
www.follyplay.bebo.com is an exciting new way for folly to engage with
new audiences from all over the world, sharing our enthusiasm for
digital art and creative online participation.

Forest of Imagined Beginnings

In the Forest of Imagined Beginnings there are no clear rules or
objectives. It is simply an online landscape that is vulnerable to the
whims and wants of the digi_club community who can adopt this digital
terrain as their own. This new multi-user online environment – a new
kind of forum or chat room - invites 12 -16 year olds to navigate and
explore a beautiful landscape. digi_club members can explore the forest,
embedding their own messages within the landscape and attaching
conversations to trees planted by the artists. digi_club members can
enter the forest right now at www.digi.org.uk/foib. Grown-ups have to
content themselves with the pilot at http://www.folly.co.uk/forest

LitFest Live Lines

Adopting the text message as a literary form, this Wednesday two writers
- Sarah Murphy and Catherine Sadler - took their mobile phones on the
trains around the Bay and, using Twitter, microblogged their way around
the VELOCITY festival. Their thoughts, conversations, imaginings and
observations are preserved online. Twitter has become a ‘sketchbook’ of
their journey, revealing the interaction and dialogue they had with each
other and their surroundings, online at
http://twitter.com/livelines_one/with_friends

[spectre] Velocity Festival on-line, off-line, on-rail

2007-10-09 Diskussionsfäden Taylor Nuttall

VELOCITY FESTIVAL OF DIGITAL CULTURE, LAUNCHING THIS WEEK

www.folly.co.uk/velocity http://www.folly.co.uk/velocity

11th October - 3rd November 2007

A stunning new arts festival all along the coastal rail route around
Morecambe Bay.

A magical forest where you become a deer; giant computer keys big enough
to sit on; scary film treats on Halloween; dancing on trains and a gold
locomotive that you drive with your own pedal power...

VELOCITY is like nothing you've seen before: an arts festival, a
celebration of digital culture, a chance to take part in workshops,
activities and performances, and all set in the beautifully sublime
landscape around the coastal rail route between Lancaster and
Barrow-in-Furness.

VELOCITY tackles important issues, from exploring ideas of landscape,
movement and environment to asking questions about surveillance society.

But most of all, VELOCITY is fun: a glorious exploration and celebration
of the role of technology in our lives, and a chance for participation
as well as inspiration. Come and take part in VELOCITY, and see what
technology can really be used for.

The Impact of Large Scale Integrated Displays on Architecture and Urbanism

The conference will bring together international speakers from the
architec-

ture, planning and media communities for the first time to address the in-
creasing integration of new display technologies for building construction.
The media façade becomes a data system to be specified and commissioned
with the expectation of lifetime and maintenance commensurate with other
structural elements. The digital content is very different from both the
rectangular clip material now common on LED billboards and from programmed
lighting effects. The huge impact of this development for building design
and the urban environment will be explored from theoretical and implemen-
tation perspectives by leaders in the field.

ASPECTS ADRESSED:

– the impact on architectural theory of practical media façade systems

– departure of imagery from the confines of the clip towards dynamic
creative based on building management and external information

– the practical challenges of large scale displays for urban planning;
display viewing design in public spaces

– sustainable display and image data systems that can be specified directly
by architects and installed by the construction industry and which are
maintainable over the lifetime of a media façade

SPEAKERS CURATORS INCLUDE:

Bart Lootsma, Ludger Hovestadt, Realities United, Andrew Shoben,
Kari Jormakka, Joachim Sauter, David Cunningham, Mark Dorrian, Michael Batz

[spectre] f.wish

2006-10-19 Diskussionsfäden Taylor Nuttall

boredomresearch launch *f.wish* a new kind of online forum for *folly*.

Inspired by the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees in Hong Kong where visitors make
a wish by writing it on yellow paper and tying it to an orange to hang
on a branch. If your wish hangs in the tree it will come true, if not
the myth claims that your wish is too greedy.

Try your luck and submit a wish to folly's tree at www.folly.co.uk/wish

boredomresearch are interested in engaging communities online through
contemplative and rewarding experiences. With *f.wish* they present an
alternative to your average forum.

boredomresearch are Southampton-based Vicky Isley and Paul Smith. They
interrogate the creative role of computing, producing beautifully
crafted software art that presents a fresh approach to our
technologically fraught lives.

PERIMETERS, BOUNDARIES AND BORDERS SYMPOSIUM

The f.city exhibition presented by Fast-uk and folly, Perimeters,
Boundaries and Borders presents practitioners that blur the conventional
boundaries of sculpture, industrial design and architecture through the
use of digital technology. The exhibition asks the question “What new
types of objects and environments are being created by art and design
professionals through the use of computer-aided design, data processing
and manufacturing technologies?”

The Symposium, the afternoon of the private view, is an opportunity to
hear those practitioners talk about their work and discuss how digital
technologies have enabled a convergence of disciplines, creative
practice and production techniques.
The symposium is free, but booking is essential.
