“I think the three of us in the trio try to achieve a kind of stillness through
density and a certain degree of activity. Like the many complex colours and
shadings in a pointillist painting that combine to form an impressionistic
image, our playing is often very active and busy, while, in totality, creating
a slowly shifting, almost three dimensional texture or soundscape. It could be
seen as akin to the optical 3-D pictures that have been popular in the last few
years, or the pixels in different resolution of digital photography. Another
analogy might be the trio seen as a large quiet organism made up of millions of
restless cells all working together to create the whole. I think in this way we
achieve a kind of minimal/maximal contrast that I find unique to this trio, one
which is certainly different to any other group playing I do.” Tony Buck

Friday 19/11/2010 21:00 Doors 22:00 Concert
Valerio Tricoli & Sean Baxter Duo
CLAUDIO ROCCHETTI
ANTHEA CADDY
MAT POGO
Sean Baxter on drums and junk, just like Pateras/Baxter/Brown trio’s most
chaotic moment. Valerio Tricoli manipulating the whole racket with his Revox,
and other effects. “Sean Baxter assaulted his drums with his trademark mixing
bowls, lead pipes, 20 chop sticks, windchimes and at one stage with the floor
tom and snare drum itself. All the while Valerio was adding at first subtle
echo, which would be pitch bent and warped into otherworldly sounds, eventually
building with more ad more echo’s getting more and more warped, eventually
self-oscillating into its own instrument, and a beautifully chaotic mess of
sound”.
SEAN BAXTER
Sean Baxter (drumkit and percussion) is an Australian improviser who has forged
an international reputation as a bold explorer of percussive possibilities both
as a soloist and through his work with the acclaimed avant garde trio,
Pateras/Baxter/Brown. Focusing on the use of extended techniques applied to the
conventional drumkit, he utilises an arsenal of metallic junk and other
percussive detritus to expand the sonic palette of the percussion tradition.
His performance aesthetic evokes a variety of sonic practices, ranging from
extreme metal and punishing noise to free jazz and the Modernist abstraction of
the classical avant garde.
In addition to Pateras/Baxter/Brown, he performs regularly with the brutal,
free-jazz/grindcore quartet, Embers, and in frequent ad hoc collaborative and
solo incarnations. As a soloist, his practice ranges from acoustic junk
percussion and extended drumkit technique to feedback noise—creating intense
sonic abstraction by utilising the natural, acoustic resonance of the drumkit
pushed to extremes. He is also a voracious group improviser, and has
collaborated with some of the world’s most adventurous musicians, most recently
including: Robin Fox, Kusum Normoyle, Kim Myhr, Lloyd Honeybrook, KK Null, Paul
Grabowsky, Han Bennink, Peter Brotzmann, John Wiese, Valerio Tricoli, Lucas
Abela, Robbie Avenaim, Carolyn Connors and Marco Fusinato.
VALERIO TRICOLI
His compositions bridge musique concrète and conceptual forms of sound (i.e.
the radical interest in how reality, virtuality, memory relate to each other
during the acoustic event): music, as a recorded or as a synthetically-modeled
sound, is always hovering between the “here and now” of the event and the shady
domain of memory – distant but at the same time present, like a déjà–vu
experience. Tricoli plays live music with electronic instruments – most of them
analogue – (reel-to-reel tape recorders, synthesizers, microphones, light
effects, ultrasonic speakers), however the structure of the device is
ever-changing, seeking multiple relations between the performers, the device
and the space in which the event takes place.
CLAUDIO ROCCHETTI
The work of Claudio Rocchetti is a deep plunge into thick sound, investigating
its innermost workings. Using a variety of devices such as turntables, audio
cassettes, samplers, radios, and microphones, often incorporating other objects
and traditional instruments, Berlin-based Rocchetti builds compelling
structures that employ sound as sheer matter, mass, and impact. The tarry,
mesmerizing hues that characterize his “music objects” are grounded in layers
of sound detritus.

ANTHEA CADDY
Anthea Caddy is a cellist and artist from Melbourne, Australia currently based
in Berlin, Germany. Interested in the relationship between recorded sound,
spatialisation and instrumental performance, much of Caddy’s work focuses on
the incorporation of acoustic, electroacoustic and recorded space within
performance and multi-channel installation. In live solo performance she often
uses low lighting or complete darkness in either stereo or multi-channel
configurations.
MAT POGO
Born in Rome is a vocalist and graphic artist now resident in Berlin. In the
90′s he was one of the founder members of the Burp Enterprise collective and
Jealousy Party, one of the most advanced musical units in Italy, mixing with
personal touch soul, improv, avant rock, noise and error music.
His solo set
features his voice, a microphone and some electronic devices. He developed his
own language as a vocalist using his experience as a rock singer, an improvisor
and radio artist where music, sounds, anecdotic and narrative elements fuse
constantly. Weird processed vocal eruptions, intense screams, occasional words,
pitched mouth cavity noises and electronic textures melting together in a very
expressive way and often with a delicate sense of humor.
Beside Jealousy Party
other projects he’s currently involved are Pokemachine (with Anders Hana and
Horacio Pollard), Penates (with JD Zazie), B Unit (with JD Zazie and Peter
Schlewinski), a duo with Ignaz Schick and DJ coll
 ective Sistemi Audiofobici Burp.
