Async mode is a pppd mode where we don't need hdlc anymore, this is useful
if you want not to patch your 2.4.18 kernel. Look at the
doc-linux/adsl.ppp-peersample for more details to activate this
 mode correctly.

just to clairfy, you don't need to n_hdlc patch 2,4.18 ?

 I should of added:

and if you have experienced any upload problems (e.g. modem_run failing
occasionally) and the percentage scores modem_run gives for identifying
 the blocks.

Hi, I'm writing to you because I'm trying to set up your drivers for the
Speedtouch USB modem. I've been using the Alcatel provided drivers for
some time now, with varying degrees of success. At times, they seem to
work very well, but at others (which seem to be largely unrelated to
usage levels) they fail regularly, leaving the system in a state that
requires a reboot to start working again.

However, having followed the instructions at
 http://benoit.papillault.free.fr/speedtouch/user.en.php3, I am left with
the system not able to connect. I get the following message in my
/var/log/messages file when I run pppd:

 Oct 1 18:43:04 ice pppd[218]: Couldn't attach tty to PPP unit 0:
 Invalid argument

 For reference, I am using:

kernel 2.4.10 with the follow modules loaded:
   Module Size Used by
   n_hdlc 6056 1 (autoclean)
   ppp_synctty 4572 1 (autoclean)
   ppp_generic13896 1 (autoclean) [ppp_synctty]
   slhc4608 0 (autoclean) [ppp_generic]
   usb-uhci 21964 0 (unused)
   ne 7360 1 (autoclean)

 pppd 2.3.11 (unpatched)

 pppoa2 version $Name: tar_gz_15082001

My PPP peer file is as per the example on the above-mentioned page.

 Any ideas what's going wrong?

 Thanks

 Jules

 Hi all,

This is probably a general Linux/ppp question rather than Speedtouch
 specific but here goes.

Before I fire up a connection, I have to ssh into my box, and enter 2
 commands:
 route del -net default

add replacedefaultroute to your peers/adsl file.

route add -net 192.168.0.0/24 dev eth0

is this command not done automagically by your start up scripts?
ie when it is setting up eth0 on boot.

A new and interestingly different set of objections. Does this imply that
the system at least dialled out?

in /etc/ppp/peers/adsl
change the -vpi to 0 and -vci to 38
ie not 8 and 35
