Short of an agent or ex-agent of some intelligence agency actually

It may be instructive to read through the publically available
information pertaining to the investigation of and capture by the FBI
of a ring of Cuban spies operating out of northern Virginia. The
arrest happened in mid-2009 and some interesting bits of tradecraft
were mentioned in publically available sources (such as the ring using
software on a laptop computer to decrypt transcribed numbers station
messages, which the FBI repeatedly imaged while they were gone to
collect evidence). FOIA requests may also be helpful if you are
really curious.
