I too am located here in Ohio in the southwestern corner. I love listening to
the Numbers stations as I have been listening to them since the middle 1970s.
But back in those days they were just voices with no digital modes.

HM01 is a very good station to bring young kids into the fold of shortwave
radio. I didn't elementary class yesterday and we listen to HMO 01 and had
several expressed interest in the world of intrigue stations.

Just thought you all might want to hear that

 Hello,

I also don't understand what you mean by priyom encrypting stuff. All
the schedules are there, including a very useful feature that says what
is the next station that will be transmitting.

Combine that with uwente's online radio, and you can listen to numbers
stations live and without a radio. And if you install fldigi or
something you can even decode digital transmissions.

 Yeah, too bad.

I have spent lots of time converting various schedules into a database
that I use to drive my radio.

Have tried for decades to establish some kind of logging standard, and
am always told it will never work, rather than trying to accomplish
 the task.

It just means their scheds won't get used anymore.

 Seems counterproductive to me.

 Good morning Naig,

One reason schedules are no longer included is because of wholesale
plagiarism. Those E2k members who construct schedules [including myself]
took umbrage at the manner in which certain persons just took and in some
cases reposted as their own work.
The other matter being those who freely used and never saw fit to supply
any of their own loggings for us to use.

Unfortunately the matter grew to a head and we sadly saw fit to refuse
those who had reasonably asked permission to use and to withdraw their
permitted use from Priyom who had also asked and were given permission.

This isn't elitism; we are just protecting the wishes of those who
produced schedules and who saw red at the wholesale abuse we suffered from
certain 'non-contributing' members - of which a few more will be removed
soon - and others mentioned above.

 Regards
 Paul
 For ENIGMA2000

I'd like to know hot to do to obtain the number station schedules from
ENIGMA2000. I remember some months ago it was possible to read it in the
bulletin, while now it is no more included in the bulletin.
 Thank you bye

Why would we care if it crashed and burned? If they don't publish a

I see both sided of this BUT it seems childish.

Hi all, I dissent totally and am disgusted by the dog in the manger attitude
shown when the withholding of the schedules of number stations was
 challenged..

It is a hobby, step back, relax, chill out, enjoy it, this hobby is based on
cooperation and information sharing, not secrecy government spooks are too
 good at that!

My view for what it is worth, is that the whole thing rests on cooperation -
you destroy that and ENIGMA2000 will crash and burn. Ask yourself; why should
we send you our logs to colate if you claim the contents belongs to you, when
 that clearly is false.

You do not own the date in the schedules, you and the the collators, rely on
we the community of watchers who collect the raw dataand send it in so
the the collators, producers of the news letter, creators of the schedules
and other items can process it.
Like us you put your efforts into a common pool for a common purpose, but
 you do not own it..

Our clear intention I believe in sending data in is so the collated data can
be distributed to *_anyone needing it._*Not restricted to some tin-pot
committee of the chosen few; your not running GCHQ or the NSAit's all in
the public domain if you look!

Carry on you will end-up with nothing to use to create the newsletter and
schedules ifwe stopped sending stuff to you. So the data is NOT the property
of the collators it is the collective property of the wider community of
watchers who provided the raw datawith the intended to help other watchers by
sharing it. I suggest you restore the schedulesor we need a new organization
that will do the job properly.

long time watcher, 73s., Dave [5000 Kgs of Napalm flames!]

Has ANYONE monitored ANY SIGNAL from this longtime DX target / spy numbers
station since 07/10/2014? I have not -- if the HM01 guy can't find it,
something must be going on -- and it can't be good. In a related issue, have
there been any M08a or V02 logs in the past few days? If not, perhaps there
has been a purge in the Cuban Intelligence Service (CIS) leading to
 (permanent?) loss of shortwave service.

Can the CIS use the (potentially former HM01) transmitters on a MW frequency
to reach the US mainland and get their messages/assignments out via South FLA
(or via Hispanola or friendly separatists in PR by beaming in a different
direction)? Because as we know, spying never REALLY ends (just ask any NSA
employee -- if they don't say, no comment, that is)

Yes, 73 was originally part of the Phillips code and was in fact a
 numeric.

Rather than excuses of why it's OK to either get it wrong, not know, or defy
logic, let's see a hard copy of the original code, that should solve
everything. If it's there, it's good, 10-4s? QSLs!

During the summer break, you may want to consider studying for your
Technician class ham license. There are no code requirements and you need
learn just some basic radio theory. Check out arrl.org. You could be ready
to take your exam with the help of Volunteer Examiners (VE's) in your area
in just of couple of weeks of studying a 1-2 hours a day. Learning about
radio propagation can only enhance your experience in radio. Then, you can
start talking to the world as well as listening. My only regret in becoming
a ham is that I wish I had done it sooner.

Hey, I really appreciate the responses to my question. I don't intend
to use my radio when there is lightning, and I'm going to just keep the
antenna unplugged from the radio when I'm not using it. To be clear,
I'm in southeastern PA - not a whole lot of lightning action here.

I may expand my array in the future, but for now I've just got the 20'
antenna that came with the radio, clipped to a tree branch diagonally
outside my office window. Sounds like I have little to worry about.

Someone mentioned putting the free end (the end that plugs into my
radio) in a ceramic cup when not in use, rather than letting it hang
free from my windowsill (which is what it's doing now). Seems like an
 easy enough thing to do.

Thanks again for the kind responses. I am completely new to this and
just want to have some fun listening to the world. And I'm planning to
talk more about numbers stations with my math classes in September.
Right now, blissfully, I am enjoying a little summer break.

 Hi Justin,
What part of the country are you in? If you are subject to numerous nearby
strikes, some caution may be in order.
Typically, a very short wire antenna such as yours that is probably no more
than 20' above the ground will not be prone to lightning strikes unless as
mentioned, you live in an area with frequent electrical storms such as parts
of Florida. If you wind up expanding your array in the future, lightning
 protection may be called for.
As a precaution, in the event of a nearby thunderstorm, you most definitely
will want to disconnect your antenna from your radio and move the connector
away from anything that may ground. Just remember, lightning will generally
take the path of least resistance so don't afford it the opportunity. And,
lightning can strike from clouds as far as 20 miles distant.
I'm not sure of your exact antenna design. As further protection, you may
wish to have the end attached to the tree connected to the tree via an
insulator. In other words, tie a dacron cord to the tree, attach a plastic or
ceramic insulator to the cord, connect your wire antenna to the other end of
the insulator. If you have one of the roll up type antennas that come with
some shortwaves, you may be able to just tie another dacron cord to the
insulator and then clip the antenna to that.
Anyway, hope this is of some help.

If this is totally against the rules for me to ask a newbie question
here, I apologize and please ignore.

I just got interested in Numbers Stations (as a math teacher, I love
numbers and codes, and when I played some recordings I found online for
my students, they were totally creeped out - which was a bonus).

I got myself a Tecsun PL-600. I'll be really excited if I ever get to
hear a Numbers Station live -- at this point I'm just interested in
hearing stations from around the world, and particularly folk music of
 other countries.

The Tecsun PL-600 came with an antenna, maybe 20 feet long(?). My
office is on the second floor of my house. I've run the antenna out my
window and attached it to a tree, diagonally from my house.

My incredibly newbie question is: Do I need to worry about lightning?
As long as I keep the antenna unplugged from the radio during a
lightning storm, will I be OK? Obviously I haven't done anything to
ground my antenna, but all it amounts to is a wire running from my
window to a tree, about 12 feet off the ground. There are much taller
 trees all around the house.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Justin

I'm not dismissing your point at all: I just found it interesting that HM01's
op (Pedro, Doña Havana, Sr. Compiúter) happened by an open mic some 24 hrs.
after you wondered aloud if HM01's op was intentionally messing around with
 the callups you predicted.

Having experience of this sort, I would have expected that the messages would
have been relayed to HM01's op minutes before the initial brodcast, giving
the op (formerly known as Pedro) little if any time to mangle the callups
just to throw your predictions out the window. Then again, homo sum et
 errare humanum est.

(And if my Latin's wrong, well Q-E-D!)

I agree that someone should be on-site to bring the transmitters up and press
[PLAY], and two hours is plenty of time to goof off or to oops on occasion.
I remember even catching an odd familiar tune playing in the background of a
QRN- and QRM-filled V02a transmission which turned out to be RHC's ident. I
think I uploaded that recording some time ago, but I digress:
HM01/V02a/SK01/M08a's record over the years clearly establishes that
somebody's at home even if he/she/it has been asleep at the wheel. Those
errata enable us to gleam more information about HM01 - from message
 sabotage to open-mic night.

I think that there is a pattern hiding behind the numbers*, but that there
mustn't be a lot of opportunity for the op to swap a legit callup for a bogus
one. In contemporary radio, programming is centrally controlled and vetted.
I would expect State-run clandestine programming would be even more so. If
it turns out my experience/prejudice is wrong, I will gladly eat my words.
In fact, I hope to be proven wrong - it means there's more to learn and

Just to recap (and hopefully entertain): I'm not dismissing the possibility,

Wouldn't be so surprising Remember that HM01 broadcasts for TWO
HOURS on 14375 (05 - 07 UT). Since the main broadcast runs about 45 -50
minutes (22 - 25 minutes for each repeating segment of number series),
there is much 'down time' between the end of the 05 UT broadcast and
the beginning of the 06 UT broadcast. The carrier is ALWAYS on during
the down time, so if there is anything that hits a potentially open
microphone, it WILL be transmitted via shortwave. Note that the
broadcasts can NOT be done automatically: someone has to be around to
push the buttons, etc. to make sure the appropriate frequencies go on
at the appropriate UT (while perhaps monitoring other not so
clandestine transmissions from apparently co-located RHC, which is
still on up to and beyond 0659 UT on several frequencies). Lots of
things can happen during this down time -- a crossed wire, etc. Who
 knows?

Nice pickup -- but my main reason for listening is to try to figure out
what they'll do next regarding the number sequences, not to find the
 mythical 'Pedro'

 Shawn From Flushing NY
(who expects to hear another transmission on 14375 in about 6 hours
with a possible number series update)

 Radio Communications

For immediate release: 27 March 2014

US Ham Operators and Government Test HF Radio Communications

Disaster Communications Compatibility Exercise Uses Automatic Link
 Establishment

Washington, DC, and San Francisco, CA – 27 March 2014 - US Amateur Radio
operators (ham operators) and Federal Government radio stations are engaged
in a nationwide test of their capability to communicate with each other by
shortwave radio, in case of an emergency or disaster. They are participating
in a 12-day joint readiness exercise running from 27 March through 7 April,
covering all areas of USA, using a digital High Frequency (HF) radio system
known as Automatic Link Establishment (ALE). This High Frequency
Interoperability Exercise 2014 (HFIE-2014) runs concurrent with the federal
 National Exercise Program (NEP) 2014.

ALE is a standardized digital signaling protocol used by each radio service,
ham and government, to establish HF communications between their own
stations. For the first time, the government regulatory agencies (FCC and
NTIA) have authorized these stations to communicate with each other using
ALE. HF radio enables long distance communication independent of terrestrial
 communications infrastructure, internet, or satellites.

To facilitate the communication testing, the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) secured temporary authority from the National
Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC). Federal Government radio stations and hams
are allowed to communicate with each other using ALE during the exercise.
Under existing rules, hams have secondary access to 5 HF radio channels on
which Government stations are the primary users.

HF radios used by Federal Government stations have the ALE capability built
into the hardware. Amateur Radio operators have implemented the same ALE
protocols using their personal computers with ham radio equipment and
software. The Special Temporary Authority allows for on-the-air testing of
interoperability between the hardware and software-generated ALE
 implementations.

Participation in the interoperability exercise is open to all ALE-capable
Federal Government radio stations and to all ALE-capable US Amateur Radio
stations. While five channels are available if needed, the test plan calls
for using only two of the channels in order to minimize impact on other
stations not participating in the exercise. Specifics of the STA are as
 follows:

 (1) Temporary modification of the authority granted at NTIA Manual section
7.3.8(4), which authorizes Federal Government stations to communicate with
stations in the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service, to allow
communications with any Amateur Radio station utilizing Automatic Link
Establishment, limited to the five channels in the 5 MHz band which are
available to the Amateur Radio Service on a secondary basis, for the period
 March 27th through April 7th 2014.

 (2) Concurrent waiver by the FCC of that part of FCC rule 97.111(a)(4) which
limits communications with US Government stations to transmissions necessary
to providing communications in RACES, limited to the five channels in the 5
MHz band which are available to the Amateur Radio Service on a secondary
basis, for the period March 27th through April 7th 2014.

The HFIE-2014 is a semi-annual ham radio readiness exercise coordinated by
the HFLINK organization http://hflink.com and the Global ALE High Frequency
 Network http://hflink.net

It is open to all ALE-capable ham radio stations. Technical and operational
guidelines for ham and federal government stations are available at:
 http://hflink.net/hfie2014

National Exercise Program (NEP) 2014 is a complex emergency preparedness
exercise with activities sponsored by government departments and agencies,
designed to educate and prepare the whole community for complex, large-scale
disasters and emergencies. As part of the National Preparedness Goal (NPG),
it enables a collaborative, whole community approach to national preparedness
that engages individuals, families, communities, the private and nonprofit
sectors, faith-based organizations and all levels of government.

Good morning. This is my first question:
It has been said many times, and now is given to established, that
these transmissions are to be received by agents located throughout
the area and that one of the strengths of this system of communication
of messages is the fact of not having to use special devices to be
able to receive. Infact, as we have always said, we just need a
shortwave radio, cheap, small and convenient, that does not arouse
suspicion. I noticed that in many cases it goes on the hunt for signs
of Numbers Stations with instrumentation, and especially antennas,
complex and huge, which will surely help to receive distant signals
but in my opinion are not logical to use for receipt of NS. That is, I
mean, to understand exactly where they come from and who they are
eventually destined for the messages, it is useless to resort to huge
antennas and professional receivers because I think that we don't have
to hunt for the signal to reach the source, we don't have to go as far
as possible, but we have to let the signals come to us. Agents who
have to receive messages don't use professional receivers and big
antennas to wire all over the garden or on the roof. If it's true that
agents use little receivers and antennas, with similar devices
monitors have to try to find the signals. It is obvious that a SWL
with such powerful devices can hear even really far signals, but this
is not in the intention of NS programmes. The sense of NS, if we want
to understand something more, is to receive them with the same devices
used by agents. A signal sent for example from Russia for agents
located in Italy is easily receivable with professional receivers and
wire antennas cut for the right band. But to understand exactly who it
is for that message need trying with domestic receivers and antennas.
If the signal is perfectly received all over Italy it means that
signal is potentially routed to agents in Italy. If in Italy, with
domestic devices, that signal is not receivable, it means that message
is not intended to agents in that area. To try to understand where
they came from but also where they have to go then is useful to try to
do triangulations reception operated by monitors located everywhere
and can operate with the same home equipment. Just so we can groped to
identify areas of sending/receiving messages. It is correct my idea?
Do you agree with this point of view?

 Bye, Naig

Back on 01/22/2014, HM01 @ 5855 kHz was barely audible under the static and
QRM from WTWW (5830). However, I have found out that I can get an image of
the transmission @ 4945 kHz (5855 -910 [AKA 2X IF], that is) which was
clearer than the primary signal. Numbers were:

 81817 // 14855 // 81785 // 82461 // 65525 // 61073 as they had been for the
 past several days.

However, later on that day (17 UT, 01/22/2014 @ 11530 kHz) I BARELY caught
wind of a new series of numbers (which would normally be the broadcast for UT
 01/23/2014):

81818 (assumed; static, etc. made it impossible to determine for sure, so I
used my rules to make this assumption based on the transmission of the
 following day) // 14856 // 60471 (replacing an expected 81786) // 82462 //
 65526 // 61074

On 01/24/2014 @ 05 UT on 5855, the signal was MUCH CLEARER (as well as at the
4945 image I mentioned above, which exists due to my wacky radio) with the
 following numbers:

 81871 // 14857 // 60472 // 82463 // 65527 // 61075

On all broadcasts (in which each segment lasted only 22 minutes or so), the
segment abruptly ended BEFORE a repetition of 61075 and its associated .TXT
file (and may have also been one runthrough short, which contributed to the
segments lasting less than their usual 24 -25 minutes; remember that two such
segments = one transmission). This proves that the entire transmission is
prerecorded (either as a mp3 type file, CD, audio tape, etc. prior to
transmission) or else someone would have noticed this and put in the
 appropriate material in subsequent transmissions.

Early today, I heard the 05 UT transmission (carrier noticed by 0500 UT, but
no numbers, etc. transmitted until 0506 UT; off @ 0528 UT, back on @ 0529 UT
and off by 0551 UT with carrier leaving by 0554 UT), the 06 UT transmission @
11435 (surprisingly good signal for this band; carrier on by 0559 UT, numbers
by 0559.5, off by 0621, back on @ 0629 UT-- yes, there was an approximately 8
minute bathroom break between segments-- and off @ 0651 UT), and the 07 UT
transmission on 9330 (good signal; once transmission strength established, I
went to SLEEP-- note that by then it was after 2 AM in the Eastern Time Zone
 in which I reside in).

I was hiking in the Pike National Forest today and listening on my KA1103
and caught the tail end of Spy message (five letter cipher groups) on 8008
kHz and according to the clock on the little rig the transmission end at
 2328 utc.

I wonder if anyone from this forum hike around with a portable receiver in
their shirt pocket at times? I do quite often and catch a neat signal from
 time to time.

During the past few days a Spanish numbers station appears to be active on

Heard in the USA, not audible here in Holland. Clues anyone?

 All,

I'm writing an article about spy numbers stations and need some high
resolution images to accompany the piece. I'd like an image of Bulgarian
Betty or the Lincolnshire Poacher stations. Any photo's of the Warrenton
Training Center would also be helpful. But anything that might help
illustrate the story of these stations and their Cold War missions would help
 tremendously.

Full credit would go to the copyright holder.

If anyone as any high resolution photographic resources that could assist me,

I picked up a small portable shortwave radio at a ham auction for $10

radio. I'm pretty sure similar radios for similar prices can be had on
eBay. Also, my Yaesu VX-6 does a decent job of receiving on the
shortwave bands when it has a decent antenna. The only problem I might
see with those is the need for an adaptor for the SMA connector it
uses for the antenna. But those are also easy to come by.

There's something that having laws to restrict transmissions on real

If you're limiting yourself to shortwave, that may be true. I got
interested in VHF/UHF/microwave/mmwave weak-signal work a number of years
ago. It's a whole new world. The others interested in this facet of ham
radio are not the same as most of the HF ops. Almost all are willing to
give a hand, get new people involved and on the air. Almost all are very
technically competent and have something useful to contribute. Sort of
breathes new life into the hobby.

Then try 11530KHz now: HM01 will be on the air for another 50 minutes yet.

Hamsphere is a ham radio simulator, not real radio at all. You are hearing
old recordings of LP played on Hamsphere. I repeat, Hamspherre is not a real
radio app, there are no signals being received. It is kind of like VOIP but
 with static and propagation simulation.

 Warrenton site.

Just and FYI regarding the Warrenton, VA site. It has long since been
decommissioned and replaced with very lovely (and expensive) homes that dot
the grounds where once quonset huts used to be.

I have one recording from the early period of my Short Wave Listening
(1991 - 1993). I made the recording on a blank tape, over top of an earlier
recording of Glenn Hauser's World of Radio.

I've digitized the recording and posted it to Soundcloud:

Check it out if you are interested.

Many thanks Christopher for this nice numbers journey into the past. This
was E05 (Cynthia), the synthetic voice of the CIA station, presumable
sending from the Warrington Training Cenmter, Virginia/USA, the 2nd
transmitter of this station. The other one was in Europe, in the South of
 Frankfurt/Main in West Germany.

Do you have more vintage recordings, perhaps with German stations?

A quick burst of RF, like a CW dit. Ditters send these, repeating every few

 Hi,

As mentioned earlier, the old buzzer is back. The new buzzer started on
 31-8
and stopped today (5 Sept) at 1336 UTC and after 8 minutes silence the old
 buzzer
returned to the air (1344 UTC)

Check www.numbersoddities.nl for the recording. I shortened the silent
 period

From Georgia, you should be able to hear V02a and M08 with the whip
antenna. The spynumbers.com database doesn't seem to list any activity on
7887 kHz since 2007, so I think you're using an old schedule. This list
receives a digest of the latest logs, I'd just look at the times and
frequencies being reported for V02a and try listening there. 5898 seems to
be a common one now, that might be a good start.
