Those E2k members who construct schedules [including myself] took umbrage at the manner in which certain persons just took and in some cases reposted as their own work. The other matter being those who freely used and never saw fit to supply any of their own loggings for us to use. Unfortunately the matter grew to a head and we sadly saw fit to refuse those who had reasonably asked permission to use and to withdraw their permitted use from Priyom who had also asked and were given permission. My view for what it is worth, is that the whole thing rests on cooperation - you destroy that and ENIGMA2000 will crash and burn. You do not own the date in the schedules, you and the the collators, rely on we the community of watchers who collect the raw dataand send it in so the the collators, producers of the news letter, creators of the schedules and other items can process it. Like us you put your efforts into a common pool for a common purpose, but you do not own it.. If you are subject to numerous nearby strikes, some caution may be in order. Typically, a very short wire antenna such as yours that is probably no more than 20' above the ground will not be prone to lightning strikes unless as mentioned, you live in an area with frequent electrical storms such as parts of Florida. If you wind up expanding your array in the future, lightning protection may be called for. As a precaution, in the event of a nearby thunderstorm, you most definitely will want to disconnect your antenna from your radio and move the connector away from anything that may ground. Just remember, lightning will generally take the path of least resistance so don't afford it the opportunity. And, lightning can strike from clouds as far as 20 miles distant. I'm not sure of your exact antenna design. As further protection, you may wish to have the end attached to the tree connected to the tree via an insulator. In other words, tie a dacron cord to the tree, attach a plastic or ceramic insulator to the cord, connect your wire antenna to the other end of the insulator. If you have one of the roll up type antennas that come with some shortwaves, you may be able to just tie another dacron cord to the insulator and then clip the antenna to that. Anyway, hope this is of some help. I got myself a Tecsun PL-600. I'll be really excited if I ever get to hear a Numbers Station live -- at this point I'm just interested in hearing stations from around the world, and particularly folk music of other countries. The Tecsun PL-600 came with an antenna, maybe 20 feet long(?). My office is on the second floor of my house. I've run the antenna out my window and attached it to a tree, diagonally from my house. My incredibly newbie question is: Do I need to worry about lightning? As long as I keep the antenna unplugged from the radio during a lightning storm, will I be OK? Obviously I haven't done anything to ground my antenna, but all it amounts to is a wire running from my window to a tree, about 12 feet off the ground. There are much taller trees all around the house. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Having experience of this sort, I would have expected that the messages would have been relayed to HM01's op minutes before the initial brodcast, giving the op (formerly known as Pedro) little if any time to mangle the callups just to throw your predictions out the window. Then again, homo sum et errare humanum est. (And if my Latin's wrong, well Q-E-D!) I agree that someone should be on-site to bring the transmitters up and press [PLAY], and two hours is plenty of time to goof off or to oops on occasion. I remember even catching an odd familiar tune playing in the background of a QRN- and QRM-filled V02a transmission which turned out to be RHC's ident. I think I uploaded that recording some time ago, but I digress: HM01/V02a/SK01/M08a's record over the years clearly establishes that somebody's at home even if he/she/it has been asleep at the wheel. Those errata enable us to gleam more information about HM01 - from message sabotage to open-mic night. Since the main broadcast runs about 45 -50 minutes (22 - 25 minutes for each repeating segment of number series), there is much 'down time' between the end of the 05 UT broadcast and the beginning of the 06 UT broadcast. The carrier is ALWAYS on during the down time, so if there is anything that hits a potentially open microphone, it WILL be transmitted via shortwave. Note that the broadcasts can NOT be done automatically: someone has to be around to push the buttons, etc. to make sure the appropriate frequencies go on at the appropriate UT (while perhaps monitoring other not so clandestine transmissions from apparently co-located RHC, which is still on up to and beyond 0659 UT on several frequencies). Lots of things can happen during this down time -- a crossed wire, etc. Who knows? Nice pickup -- but my main reason for listening is to try to figure out what they'll do next regarding the number sequences, not to find the mythical 'Pedro' Shawn From Flushing NY (who expects to hear another transmission on 14375 in about 6 hours with a possible number series update) __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

They are participating in a 12-day joint readiness exercise running from 27 March through 7 April, covering all areas of USA, using a digital High Frequency (HF) radio system known as Automatic Link Establishment (ALE). This High Frequency Interoperability Exercise 2014 (HFIE-2014) runs concurrent with the federal National Exercise Program (NEP) 2014. ALE is a standardized digital signaling protocol used by each radio service, ham and government, to establish HF communications between their own stations. For the first time, the government regulatory agencies (FCC and NTIA) have authorized these stations to communicate with each other using ALE. HF radio enables long distance communication independent of terrestrial communications infrastructure, internet, or satellites. To facilitate the communication testing, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) secured temporary authority from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Federal Government radio stations and hams are allowed to communicate with each other using ALE during the exercise. Under existing rules, hams have secondary access to 5 HF radio channels on which Government stations are the primary users. HF radios used by Federal Government stations have the ALE capability built into the hardware. Amateur Radio operators have implemented the same ALE protocols using their personal computers with ham radio equipment and software. The Special Temporary Authority allows for on-the-air testing of interoperability between the hardware and software-generated ALE implementations. Participation in the interoperability exercise is open to all ALE-capable Federal Government radio stations and to all ALE-capable US Amateur Radio stations. While five channels are available if needed, the test plan calls for using only two of the channels in order to minimize impact on other stations not participating in the exercise. Specifics of the STA are as follows: (1) Temporary modification of the authority granted at NTIA Manual section 7.3.8(4), which authorizes Federal Government stations to communicate with stations in the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service, to allow communications with any Amateur Radio station utilizing Automatic Link Establishment, limited to the five channels in the 5 MHz band which are available to the Amateur Radio Service on a secondary basis, for the period March 27th through April 7th 2014. (2) Concurrent waiver by the FCC of that part of FCC rule 97.111(a)(4) which limits communications with US Government stations to transmissions necessary to providing communications in RACES, limited to the five channels in the 5 MHz band which are available to the Amateur Radio Service on a secondary basis, for the period March 27th through April 7th 2014. The HFIE-2014 is a semi-annual ham radio readiness exercise coordinated by the HFLINK organization http://hflink.com and the Global ALE High Frequency Network http://hflink.net It is open to all ALE-capable ham radio stations. Technical and operational guidelines for ham and federal government stations are available at: http://hflink.net/hfie2014 National Exercise Program (NEP) 2014 is a complex emergency preparedness exercise with activities sponsored by government departments and agencies, designed to educate and prepare the whole community for complex, large-scale disasters and emergencies. This is my first question: It has been said many times, and now is given to established, that these transmissions are to be received by agents located throughout the area and that one of the strengths of this system of communication of messages is the fact of not having to use special devices to be able to receive. Infact, as we have always said, we just need a shortwave radio, cheap, small and convenient, that does not arouse suspicion. I noticed that in many cases it goes on the hunt for signs of Numbers Stations with instrumentation, and especially antennas, complex and huge, which will surely help to receive distant signals but in my opinion are not logical to use for receipt of NS. That is, I mean, to understand exactly where they come from and who they are eventually destined for the messages, it is useless to resort to huge antennas and professional receivers because I think that we don't have to hunt for the signal to reach the source, we don't have to go as far as possible, but we have to let the signals come to us. Agents who have to receive messages don't use professional receivers and big antennas to wire all over the garden or on the roof. If it's true that agents use little receivers and antennas, with similar devices monitors have to try to find the signals. It is obvious that a SWL with such powerful devices can hear even really far signals, but this is not in the intention of NS programmes. The sense of NS, if we want to understand something more, is to receive them with the same devices used by agents. A signal sent for example from Russia for agents located in Italy is easily receivable with professional receivers and wire antennas cut for the right band. But to understand exactly who it is for that message need trying with domestic receivers and antennas. If the signal is perfectly received all over Italy it means that signal is potentially routed to agents in Italy. If in Italy, with domestic devices, that signal is not receivable, it means that message is not intended to agents in that area. To try to understand where they came from but also where they have to go then is useful to try to do triangulations reception operated by monitors located everywhere and can operate with the same home equipment. Just so we can groped to identify areas of sending/receiving messages. It is correct my idea? Do you agree with this point of view? However, I have found out that I can get an image of the transmission @ 4945 kHz (5855 -910 [AKA 2X IF], that is) which was clearer than the primary signal. Numbers were: 81817 // 14855 // 81785 // 82461 // 65525 // 61073 as they had been for the past several days. However, later on that day (17 UT, 01/22/2014 @ 11530 kHz) I BARELY caught wind of a new series of numbers (which would normally be the broadcast for UT 01/23/2014): 81818 (assumed; static, etc. made it impossible to determine for sure, so I used my rules to make this assumption based on the transmission of the following day) // 14856 // 60471 (replacing an expected 81786) // 82462 // 65526 // 61074 On 01/24/2014 @ 05 UT on 5855, the signal was MUCH CLEARER (as well as at the 4945 image I mentioned above, which exists due to my wacky radio) with the following numbers: 81871 // 14857 // 60472 // 82463 // 65527 // 61075 On all broadcasts (in which each segment lasted only 22 minutes or so), the segment abruptly ended BEFORE a repetition of 61075 and its associated .TXT file (and may have also been one runthrough short, which contributed to the segments lasting less than their usual 24 -25 minutes; remember that two such segments = one transmission). This proves that the entire transmission is prerecorded (either as a mp3 type file, CD, audio tape, etc. prior to transmission) or else someone would have noticed this and put in the appropriate material in subsequent transmissions. Early today, I heard the 05 UT transmission (carrier noticed by 0500 UT, but no numbers, etc. transmitted until 0506 UT; off @ 0528 UT, back on @ 0529 UT and off by 0551 UT with carrier leaving by 0554 UT), the 06 UT transmission @ 11435 (surprisingly good signal for this band; carrier on by 0559 UT, numbers by 0559.5, off by 0621, back on @ 0629 UT-- yes, there was an approximately 8 minute bathroom break between segments-- and off @ 0651 UT), and the 07 UT transmission on 9330 (good signal; once transmission strength established, I went to SLEEP-- note that by then it was after 2 AM in the Eastern Time Zone in which I reside in).
