There are lots of 30 sec timeouts - I picked ImageProxy as it looked
promising and already got log messages. It seems not ImageProxy but
maybe something related - I'll look at other possible 30 secs timeouts.

I agree that looks like it's a timeout value, since it's always 30
seconds almost to the millisecond.

Setting artwork.imageproxy to INFO or DEBUG didn't yield anything in the
log. I did notice what when I set artwork to INFO that there is a 30
second gap between the two requests for image data when you start
playing a new album, so it may be whatever is requesting the artwork
that's causing the delay:

30sec "feels" likes a timeout value - now to find where 30 secs is used
as a timeout (or a lesser amount with retries, such as 10sec with 3
retries).

There is a 30 secs timeout in ImageProxy.pm getImage - if you enable
logging artwork.imageproxy to INFO or DEBUG - you may get log message
with details if this is the source of the delays.

So I thought I'd give it a try:

Code:

  $ emerge -pv gst-plugins-good gst-plugins-libav
  [ebuild  N ] app-text/iso-codes-3.76::gentoo  3,394 KiB
  [ebuild  N ] media-libs/gstreamer-1.14.4:1.0::gentoo  USE="caps

introspection ogg vorbis -X -egl -gbm -gles2 -ivorbis -nls -opengl (-orc)
-pango -theora -wayland" 3,617 KiB
  [ebuild  N ] media-libs/gst-plugins-good-1.14.4:1.0::gentoo  USE="-nls

  [ebuild  N ]
media-plugins/gst-plugins-libav-1.14.4.4.1.3_p20190329:1.0::gentoo  USE="-libav
(-orc)" 8,874 KiB
  Total: 5 packages (5 new), Size of downloads: 22,775 KiB

That's the run-time dependencies only, though.
To actually build it:

Code:

  dev-lang/rust-1.36.0
  Total files : 241
  Total size  : 338.26 MiB

I don't want to come across as overly critical, but ~350MB does seem a
tad excessive..

On github, you write:
> an optimised and stripped binary will be less than 3MiB which makes it
> quite small and so would be suitable to run on small devices.
The 3MB doesn't include the whole gstreamer installation, and
squeezelite is 120K. I run squeezelite on a RPI 3, so size and
performance matter, and squeezelite seems superior by design in both
regards.
While I do appreciate the new development, I think Storm needs some
compelling USP to be an alternative to squeezelite (e.g a port to
Android / iOS would be quite interesting - gstreamer is available, and
Rust can target these platforms).

Yes, I've already seen that one, it's a bit "boy-racer" for me, I'll
leave that for others to check out.

What about one of these? https://www.argon40.com/argon-one-pi4.html -
never used one, but seems to provide what you are looking for (or will,
