Thanks for linking to Michael's updated info on 7.7, 8.2 and 8.3.

I guess it was some other version that was the "weird" one which didn't
work like all other LMS versions. As I recall, it was specific to some
Logitech hardware and I was afraid I had installed -that- one, without
using that particular hardware.

I just removed 8.3x and installed the "official" 8.2 release [
logitechmediaserver_8.2.0_amd64.deb ]

8.2 can scan the libraries and playlists!

CAN SOMEONE REFRESH MY MEMORY: IS 8.3 THAT \"WEIRD\" VERSION WHICH WAS
ONLY FOR A LIMITED LINE OF SQUEEZEBOXXEN? . . . OR DID I JUST HAVE A
PROBLEM WITH A PARTICULAR NIGHTLY?

If it's the latter, I'd like to report the problem to the Devs.

Thanks!

I will mark as solved when a more knowledgeable person answers the two
questions here . . .

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] problems scanning libraries after new install of LMS 8.3

2021-11-15 Thread fbachofner

After about 6 months of having removed LMS (7.9x) for various reasons, I
have just installed the newest version on a fairly newly provisioned
Ubuntu 20.04.3 server. [ I installed
logitechmediaserver_8.3.0~1636104857_amd64.deb from 'nightlies'

It generally seems to work fine with "SLIMUSER=squeezeboxserver"

System user "squeezeboxserver" was initially set to "nogroup" (I don't
recall if this is the "normal" state of affairs for LMS installs) but I
have assigned it to the group "users."

-REGARDLESS, THIS INSTALL OF LMS CAN NEITHER SCAN THE MUSIC LIBRARY
WHICH IS (RECURSIVELY) OWNED BY ME:USERS WITH PERMISSIONS SET TO 0754
NOR THE PLAYLIST FOLDER WHICH IS (RECURSIVELY) OWNED BY ME:USERS WITH
PERMISSIONS SET TO 0774-

Other users on the network can see the contents of the music library and
can NOT write to the folders which is the desired behavior. Ideally LMS
can not write to the libraries but CAN write to the playlists folder.

As a test:

- I chmod-ed a music subdirectory and all its files to 0774 and LMS
can ALSO not scan that folder.
- I chmod-ed a music subdirectory and all its files to 0777 and LMS
can ALSO not scan that folder.

Is it possible these problems are limited to the 8.3 nightly branch?

Any insights would be appreciated.

Also, to help me troubleshoot this, I don't seem to recall where I can
find a document which clearly describes the permissions required by the
LMS user (among other setup parameters)?

Thanks in advance!

Why not run LMS on the NAS itself? If you are just serving files, there
may be more than adequate CPU cycles . . .

And if you are moving the music files to the NAS, you know it will be
on! ;)
