I used to be Chief Software guy at Dell), a second hand Dell Optiplex Small Form Factor, or Ultra Small Form Factor make a great LMS Server, you can get them for as little as $25 on ebay, they won't have a hard drive, but do have a valid Windows license key in the ROM. Here is one https://ebay.us/568ghb You can upgrade the memory with a few extra Gb, add 320Gb SSD and install Windows 7 then upgrade to Windows 10 for free. I run my Optiplex under the TV with a cable attached to one of the TV ports and network access to the NAS. If you decide to got this route, a dedicated Optiplex, anything will do, I recommend getting an i7 processor though. --- https://ctproduced.com < Creed Taylor/CTI/KUDU http://markcathcart.com/about Running LMS Server, currently 7.9.3 on Headless WIN10 System; music on Netgear ReadyNAS; Transporter(Living Room)+Duet Controller; Squeezebox Touch(Master Bedroom), (2x)Boom(Office, Patio), Radio(Guest Bedroom), Classic(garage), Duet(basement). What > can I replace it with that I can run the Logitech Media Server on (or an > equivalent) for use with my Squeezebox touch? I have a ReadyNas NVX Pioneer edition purchased in 2006. Thats how I got started with LMS, I'd never heard of it until I saw it as an option to run on the ReadyNas. I stopped running my LMS on the ReadyNas when the power supply failed and it was out for a while. The Power supplies are hard to find, but there is a UK ebay seller that has them. I've had one of the 2TB Seagate ST3200 drives failed, but since I run it as a RAID array, I simply replaced it with a Seagate ST2000 2TB drive and it rebuilt the full array. The lesson I learned was to buy a second ReadyNas, I picked up another of the same generation from ebay for next to nothing with no drives. Added 4x 2TB drives and set it up to rsync from the first, it powers on once per week, runs rysnc and powers off. I also backup the content of the first ReadyNas via iDrive, they allow backup from a Windows share. I keep thinking about replacing the ReadyNas, especially since there are 5Tb drives that would have almost as much formatted space as my whole NAS, but then I remember that time my Western Digital 1Tb external drive failed... My criteria for replacing the ReadyNas(es) will be based on the amount of time it will take to build and replace the whole NAS and the size of a single drive. I'd be inclined to actually go with a NAS that could support say 4x/6x/8x 2Tb SSD's, and that can house say 16Tb. I've not looked at how to do that but have heard good things about the WD Red SSD. --- https://ctproduced.com < Creed Taylor/CTI/KUDU http://markcathcart.com/about Running LMS Server, currently 7.9.3 on Headless WIN10 System; music on Netgear ReadyNAS; Transporter(Living Room)+Duet Controller; Squeezebox Touch(Master Bedroom), (2x)Boom(Office, Patio), Radio(Guest Bedroom), Classic(garage), Duet(basement). Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Replacement for dying NAS - suggestions?
Im still using a Qnap TS419 for file storage. Its getting on for 10 years old (I have upgraded the disks twice in that time). A long time ago I used to run LMS on it but its an ARM processor and no way would it run LMS in its current guise with Spotty etc. So I went the separate LMS route with an NFS mount to the Qnap. My production server is actually an HP Microserver with 8gb Ram and an SSD. Its very quick. My development server is a Pi4 with piCorePlayer and the same files mounted from the Qnap. If the ReadyNAS (with new disks) will work as a file server go the Pi route. Otherwise get a new Qnap or Synology VB2.4 STORAGE *QNAP TS419P (NFS) Living Room* - Joggler & SB3 -> Onkyo TS606 -> Celestion F20s *Office* - Pi3+Sreen -> Sony TAFE320 -> Celestion F10s / Pi2+DAC & SB3 -> Onkyo CRN755 -> Wharfedale Modus Cubes *Dining Room* -> SB Boom *Kitchen* -> UE Radio (upgraded to SB Radio) *Bedroom (Bedside)* - Pi2+DAC ->ToppingTP21 ->AKG Headphones *Bedroom (TV)* - SB Touch ->Sherwood AVR ->Mordaunt Short M10s Everything controlled by iPeng d6jg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=44051 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=112789 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Replacement for dying NAS - suggestions?
Personally I think the PiCorePlayer 6 on a Raspberry Pi is the way to go but I installed Logitechmedia server on my QNAP server with fantastic results. It works best on the model(TS453) that the developer wrote it for but works on well on most models. I recommend reading his thread before you decide. Still I think a Raspberry pi with PiCorePlayer 6 is a better solution. Use the NAS to store music files. https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?108702-QLogitechMediaServer-for-Qnap-with-QTS-4-2-or-higher-and-x86_64-I686-X86-support-! What are the symptoms of the dying disks ? How old is the netgear ? -- is it no longer supported ? You could go the RPi route, as suggested, with your library of music attached via external USB disk, or network share. You cld also build a new NAS using a platform like 'Freenas' (https://www.freenas.org/) - use the rpi to access library stored in the freenas box ... -- Bill Clark, Windham, VT Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.3 - 1597698350 @ Tue Aug 18 04:13:31 CEST 2020 Hostname: ubuntu-lms - ProxMox Virtual Environment 5.4-3 | Ubuntu 16.04 xenial piCorePlayer | piCorePlayer v6.0.0 | www v0005 | linux 4.19.105-pcpCore_v7 | piCore v10.3pCP | Squeezelite v1.9.6-1206-pCP --- kappclark's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29572 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=112789 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter

My trusty old Netgear NAS is dying (or at least the disks are). What can I replace it with that I can run the Logitech Media Server on (or an equivalent) for use with my Squeezebox touch?
