SQUID [11/03] Opening Night of Phaedra

/ The Squid List /--

Opening Night of Phaedra

Thursday, November 3rd

8 PM

$10.00

/ Event Description /---

Set in a secluded, island estate in early 19th century Europe, this
faithful rendering of the Racine text moves the action into an age of
tea cups, home mysticism and repressed longings, presented against a
backdrop of relentless rain and candle-light, tinkling music boxes
and echoing footsteps. The story follows the plight of impoverished
aristocrat Phaedra (Gina Seghi), forced by her evangelist merchant
husband, Theseus (Chris Carlone), to live in isolation with his son
by another marriage, the proud Hippolytus (Lee Marcotte), and the
boy's tutor, Theramenes (Chris Kelly). Sequestered in the boy's
island home, they share their uneasy existence with Aricia (Stacy
Malia), the daughter of Theseus's rivals for a rich estate, tricked
into becoming his ward after the untimely death of her father. As the
tale unravels under the watchful eyes of the whispering servants
(Margery Fairchild and Kendra Arimoto), it is revealed that Phaedra
has developed an all-consuming love for Hippolytus, and through the
guidance and manipulation of the housekeeper, Oenone (Michaela
Greeley), she attempts to consummate her love for her own stepson,
but the disastrous meeting culminates in an attempted suicide that
turns out to only be the tip of the iceberg. Passionate, lyrical,
gothic, this perfectly autumnal play is staged in the atmospheric
Climate Theater (285 9th Street, at Fulsom), featuring costumes by
Angelina Schwark and direction by Stuart Bousel, with performances
running November 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, all at 8 PM.

Phaedra is the third production of No Nude Men's 2005-2006 season,
having already begun with The Book of Genesis Remixed and Remastered,
by Nirmala Nataraj, and a revival of Speak To Me, by Stuart Bousel.
The group formed in 2003 with a production of Marlowe's Edward II and
has since produced the plays Troijka, Love Egos Alternative Rock, The
Exiled and the original production of Speak To Me. The cast of
Phaedra includes company regulars Michaela Greeley, Chris Kelly,
Stacy Malia, Gina Seghi and Margery Fairchild, as well as Actors
Theater of San Francisco regular Chris Carlone and two San Francisco
stage debuts from Lee Marcotte and Kendra Arimoto, a recent Stanford
theater grad. For more information about the company and cast and
crew bios, take a look at www.horrorunspeakable.com.

RECENT REVIEW of SPANGLISH 101 at DARMOUTH COLLEGE

Thursday, July 21, 2005
Comedian Bill Santiago entertains with 'Spanglish'

Standup comedian Bill Santiago performed his set, Spanglish 101, to a
full house at the Bentley Theater on Tuesday night. The set showcased
the
Spanglish language and the Latino-American culture at large.
Despite his
wry underdog humor, Santiago was carefully good-natured and tasteful.

He pulled off irreverence without being abrasive -- a rarity in
standup comedy -- with his immense charisma and versatile
expressions. Standing still, he was handsome and collected, but the
next second he was contorting his face to look like his grandmother,
or screaming at the top of his lungs to imitate his mother (the
theater erupted), or salsa dancing in place while recounting
encounters with the non-Latina women he had met at gentrified salsa
clubs.

A former journalist and something of an intellectual, Santiago's humor
differs from the superficial (if delightful) humor of other comedians
such
as Jerry Seinfeld. Although an immensely engaging physical comedian,
Santiago also had much insight to offer.

This was especially true when he recounted his childhood. His
parents, for
example, always tried to encourage and develop his masculinity. Don't
forget, that I gave birth to four muchachos, his mother would say as
she
brandished her arm as a phallic symbol.

How am I supposed to live up to that? he asked. He extended his
various
insights about his family to Puerto Rican culture at large -- I'm not
dysfunctional, I'm tropical, he said.

And then there were his jokes about American-Latino relations at large.
You know we're now the biggest minority in America. Of the people there
are least of, we are the biggest of that group, Santiago said.

He described how most Americans react to the notion of Puerto Rico
becoming
a state: Fifty is a nice round number, 51 -- kind of too ethnic. He
talked about Latinos in politics: Everyone talks about a first black
president
but never Hispanic -- evidently there's some sort of line.

Santiago also talked about professional hurdles he has faced on
account of
his roots. Once, he met with a producer who was interested in making
a show
based on Santiago's childhood.

The first thing he said was 'So, you're Latino...what does your father
do?' I told him he was a lawyer, and he was like, 'Uhh, that's not
funny,'
Santiago said.

Spanglish 101 is a work in progress, as evidenced by the ream of
yellow
legal pad paper he kept on a desk beside him and constantly referred to
during the set.

The notes included his top ten list of best things about being
Hispanic. For
No. 7, you automatically get a part in the school production of West
Side
Story. I was cast as a Jet, he lamented. My parents wouldn't look
at me.
And then there was the benefit of dating interracially within your own
race.

Bill Santiago was raised in Brooklyn and attended New York University,
where he studied film. After an aborted career in journalism, he
moved to
San Francisco and launched his career as a stand-up comedian -- as a
comedian, he was funny, but as a reporter, he was a joke, according
to one
source.

Veterans of the George Jackson Brigade

Friday, October 14th

7:00pm-10:00pm

$5 (no one turned away for lack of funds)

/ Event Description /---

A benefit for the GJB Information Project...

Appearing together publicly for the first time, three former members
of the George Jackson Brigade will discuss their experience in an
underground cell in the Pacific Northwest in the 1970s. Bo Brown,
Mark Cook and Ed Mead will also share their insights on organizing
within prison, the influence of gay liberation on their revolutionary
aspirations, and role of class conflict within the '70s underground.
The three will be introduced by Daniel Burton-Rose, the coordinator
of the oral history archive the George Jackson Brigade Information
Project.

The George Jackson Brigade formed in the crucible of prisoners'
rights organizing which came out of the civil rights movement and
mass anti-war protests of the '60s. In its three-year existence, it
claimed 11 bombings, as many bank robberies, and one prisoner
liberation. Targets included the Department of Corrections, the
Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, as
well as different corporate offices. The chemistry present in the
group was the same that had been combusting across
the country: society's most oppressed members allied with college
educated youth who refused to continue their class and white skin
privilege. In the case of the Brigade, women took center stage,
queers challenged straights, convicts communicated with college
students, and a black man enthusiastically aided whites.

The Non-violent Resistance Movement in Palestine: A U.S. Speaking Tour

Friday, October 28th

7:00pm-10:00pm

$5 (no one turned away for lack of funds)

/ Event Description /---

Largely unnoticed by the world's press, thousands of Palestinians and
hundreds of Israeli supporters are engaged in a major nonviolent
resistance movement against the occupation and confiscation of
Palestinian land, and especially against the Enclosure Wall that is
destroying Palestinian homes and livelihood. This is a grassroots
movement of farmers, workers and housekeepers who brave teargas, stun
grenades, rubber bullets, live ammunition, arrests, beatings and even
death to defy their expulsion from their land and its conversion into
Israeli settlements. Nevertheless, this struggle has been embraced
by thousands of men, women and children in Palestinian villages, and
by Israeli and international solidarity volunteers. Working together
in hundreds of unarmed mass protests and demonstrations, they block
with their bodies the ongoing construction of the Enclosure Wall
designed to remove Palestinians from the land and replace them with
Jewish settlements.

Ayed Morrar and Jonathan Pollak are two of the major figures in this
movement. Ayed is from the Palestinian village of Budrus where he
organized the first Popular Committee Against the Wall in 2003. Since
then, Budrus has staged more than 60 nonviolent demonstrations and
became the model for other villages in the West Bank. Ayed is a well-
known advocate and speaker for nonviolent resistance in Palestine,
has advised other committees on tactics and principles, has sat on
government councils, and has conducted one previous overseas speaking
tour (in Sweden). He has been physically attacked many times for his
efforts and has spent more than six years in Israeli prisons.

Jonathan comes from the activist Jewish community in Israel. He,
too, has been a tireless organizer, and also formed a popular
committee against the Wall among his Jewish colleagues. He has
participated in more than 200 demonstrations, has been arrested
dozens of times, and was recently wounded in the head by a teargas
canister fired directly at him from a high-velocity launcher. He is
an eloquent spokesperson for the Israeli solidarity movement in
support of Palestinian rights.

This event will be ASL interpreted.

garbage output has doubled. Rogers explains that, despite popular
wisdom, this torrent of trash is not primarily the responsibility of
the individual consumer, instead it's the outcome of a free market
system that needs waste to maintain high consumption levels. To
understand the roots of today's waste-addicted culture, Rogers
examines the grisly, oddly fascinating underworld of trash.

Communities around California are fighting a new wave of incinerators
marketed as green energy sources. Not only do these plants charade
as environmentally friendly, they clearly violate principles of
environmental justice, putting a disproportionate pollution burden on
low-income communities of color. GAIA recently worked with residents
of Alameda, San Leandro and Oakland to stop the city of Alameda from
building a new incinerator in San Leandro. A key part of GAIA's
approach is emphasizing that there are other solutions: we don't have
to bury or burn garbage. GAIA members around the world advocate zero
waste, which means eliminating both the volume and toxicity of waste.

Capacitor premieres Digging In The Dark

Thurs-Sun, Oct 20-23 27-30

8 PM

$22-36; student/group discounts available

/ Event Description /---

Working with scientists from Stanford and UC Berkeley, DIGGING IN THE
DARK explores the nature of modern geophysics and the multiple layers
leading towards the Earth's core as a metaphor for human consciousness.

Synthesizing dance with new circus, innovative props, and interactive
media - Capacitor sends you on a journey through the layers of the
Earth and into the core with the premiere of DIGGING IN THE DARK,
their first full-length production in two years. This is the third
project of the Capacitor Lab, the company's interdisciplinary think
tank and forum for collaboration and in-depth dialogue with a
community of artists and individuals from a specific field of study.
The primary artists include Jodi Lomask (Capacitor's Artistic
Director/Choreographer); Noah Thorp of Listen Labs (composer);
Monique Kapp (costume designer); and Glenn Meader (interaction
designs). In addition to the artistic collaborators, Capacitor Lab
participants include UC Berkeley geophysicist Sander Caldwell and
Stanford geophysicist Antoine Guitton and Jesse Lomask.

Capacitor founder, Jodi Lomask, brings a group of artists together
who accumulate energy, concepts, and images from our technologically
impacted culture and synthesize them into multi-sensory dance
performances. Since 1997, Capacitor has been creating performances
designed to put people in personal contact with scientific concepts
by synthesizing the body with innovative props and interactive media.
Under the direction of Jodi Lomask, Capacitor has created works that
tackle the creation of the universe (Within Outer Spaces, 2001); the
past and the future of mankind (futurespecies, 2000), the modern
phenomenon of video gaming (Avatars, 2002-03), and now, a journey
through the layers of the Earth (Digging in the Dark, 2005).

You Can Do It Day

Sunday, October 9

12:00pm-5:00pm

FREE

/ Event Description /---

CHRONICLE BOOKS AND THE METREON SAN FRANCISCO ANNOUNCE
YOU CAN DO IT DAY

Ever wanted to gallop on the beach? Sing rather than lip-sync?
Firewalk? You can do it! Get started Sunday, October 9th at YOU CAN
DO IT Day to be held at the Metreon Entertainment Complex in San
Francisco, Sunday, October 9, noon - 5:00PM.

The day will feature short talks and demos from a variety of Bay Area
expert mentors* from the best-selling Chronicle book, YOU CAN DO IT!,
including horseback riding, firewalking, wine appreciation,
volunteering, art appreciation, playing an instrument, singing, and
starting a rock band.

Bay Area resident Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas had a vision of writing a
book that would inspire a nation of women to learn something new and
put themselves first on their to-do lists. Tragically, Lauren died on
United flight 93 on September 11. The book was then nurtured to
publication by her beloved family and published by Chronicle Books.

Lauren's idea was to empower every woman who's ever said, I wish I
couldhellip to go out and do it. Whether it is learning a language
or learning to tango, getting her finances in shape or working for a
cause she believes in, this warm, can-do book features 60 projects in
all, each guided step-by-step by a female mentor, plus a colorful
badge at the end of every project as a fun reward.

The Metreon will be the host of this exciting and fun-filled day of
events inspired by the YOU CAN DO IT philosophy. The Chronicle Books
Bookstore in the Metreon will be offering giveaways throughout the
day and visitors can participate in a wide variety of activities
