Try http://www.lindsaybks.com/ for various books on casting. There are
several listed on the web site, but nothing specifically about lost wax
casting. Seems to me there was one in a recent print catalog that you can
order for free from the web site.

sslivesteam-Digest - patterns

2001-03-07 Thread Harry Wade

At 12:00 AM 3/7/01 -0800, you wrote:
From: Royce Woodbury [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Royce's driver pattern
I know this process sounds labor intensive, but not more so than what is
being considered by Mike, Harry, and others.

Royce,
In this business (master making) there's a limit to the amount of
hand work that can be side-stepped by mechanical means and from there on in
it's pure handwork, 'Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice' as to how
it gets done. A method similar to yours has been used by Kozo Hiraoka for
building drivers for his 3/4" scale loco projects, although not for
patterns but for the actual wheels. Using the material at hand,as you've
done, is what most of us would do. But you've made a suggestion that I
believe bears more discussion, that of donating the pattern. The question
would be to, donate to who or what?
Years ago in the large scales someone came up with the idea of
organizing a pattern pool. Back in those days (1950's), when there were
foundries in every town and patternmakers had not become extinct, folks
were much more likely to make the patterns for anything they wanted. (The
same was true in the UK where a builder might make all his own patterns as
a matter of course even if they were available commercially.)
It was known as the Live Steam Pattern Pool and I can't be certain
but the idea probably originated with Pershing G. Scott, who published the
"Live Steam Newsletter" (which eventually became Live Steam Magazine). The
idea was to donate your patterns to the Pool where they would be available
on loan, like a lending library, to anyone in the live steam fraternity.
Those who wanted use of the patterns would apply, sending a nominal
security deposit, and would be responsible for the shipping both ways. The
notion took hold and over the years quite a library of patterns was
collected, including patterns from Walt Disney's original Lille Belle and
several of the Henry Coventry engines. The contents of the Pool were held
by several people over the years but tragically for the world of live steam
the building in which the patterns were stored by their last custodian
burned to the ground and all the patterns, at least those in storage at the
time, were lost.
So based upon your offer of the donation of your pattern, I propose
that we create the Garden Gauge or Small Scale Pattern Pool. Comments?
Nominations for first custodian?

Thanks for your response, Harry. And Salty. When I suggested donating the
pattern, in my mind it was to be to a "public" entity, rather than to an
individual for their exclusive use. The pattern pool concept would be a
perfect recipient of the pattern. I love the idea. I wonder, however, just
how many out there are "involved" enough to actually cast their own drivers, as
opposed to just kitbashing an existing model, or buying castings which are
commercially available, albeit never ideal. I guess it wouldn't really matter
how often the patterns were used, as long as they were safe and available to
those whose projects require a needed pattern. I would think that it (the
pool) would encourage more scratch building, as it is the intricate parts which
frequently intimidate. So build it once, and they will come?

Seems as though it might be possible to spread out the pattern work to many to
create a complete project. The work, of course, would be in the design
process. I've spent hundreds of hours on my sp18 project just scaling and
figuring out how to build parts. Once the "engineering" is done, making the
pattern is usually relatively quick. And management of the process (organizing
the pattern makers) would require a committment of time, too.

Just some thoughts,

royce

I spent some time with the Cheddar rep at DH '01 while he was testing this
new loco on one of the tracks. The best way to describe it was a "Sammie on
steroids". He was running light, but never could quite coordinate throttle
and available traction. Extremely powerful engine. Target pricing to be
somewhere between the Ruby and the RH entry level engines.

I would be more than casually interested in doing this as I am getting
into casting and pattern making. I would propose to cast rubber (RTV silicon
molds), wax patterns and probably cast a permanent pattern. I could then
return the master to the owner and loan or rent out the permanent patterns as
requested. If and when I get together all the equipment needed for
investment and fine sand casting I propose to cast wheels and other parts.
As I am retired I do not to make a lot of money but enough to cover my

Re: Pattern pool

2001-03-07 Thread WaltSwartz

The Naples, Seaboard Gulf RR built trackage from Ft. Myers to Naples, FL in
1926. Construction of the Naples Depot was started in 1926 and completed in
1927.
Passenger and freight service was initiated and continued until 1942. The
NSG was a wholly owned subsidiary of the Seaboard Airline RR. In 1942
Seaboard closed shop and sold trackage and Depot to Atlantic Coast Line RR.
In 1972 ACL closed down the operation and the Depot was scheduled for
demolition. A group of local citizens raised enough money to buy the Depot
and convert it to a "Civic and Cultural Center." The Depot had been renting
out meeting rooms ever since. I was asked to join the Board of Directors in
the early 1990s, primarily because I had some steam locomotive whistles and
the Board wanted a steam whistle rigged up to blow at noon every day except
Sunday. The Depot became more involved in "smaller" trains and now I am
Stationmaster of the Depot in charge of implementing a Lionel Operating
Display (16' x 34') with nine trains running simultaneously. We are currently
building a 7.5" gauge railroad around the property, about 1000' of trackage.
Future plans call for obtaining the adjacent property to expand the 7.5" and
install four garden railroads, one to be elevated for live steam.
The building has been here for 75 years, and we are having a fund drive
to establish a $4,000,000.00 endowment fund to assure the continued existence
of The Depot. The Depot is intending to be more involved in Small Trains and
more of a museum type location.
While I personally am reasonably sober, somewhat dependable, and
relatively organized, I'm fairly certain the Depot would be able to act as a
repository for #1 gauge patterns, molds, etc so long as actual packaging and
shipping costs were paid for by the users. The building has been here for 75
years, I've been here for only 10 years, but I'm certain the Naples Depot
will outlast me
Points to ponder as you keep your steam up!

The ease of a list with email capabilities is a great benefit of your

An advantage : no centralized location to have all the patterns at risk of

A disadvantage : The pattern falling into the hands of heirs with no idea what

Bruce Davey was running one at Diamondhead on the small 'O' gauge loop
(it's re-gaugable). It's quite heavy for the size and may just have been
suffering from 'brand new engine' syndrome, but the contol-ability was not
