YUGOSLAVIA WANTS TO ENTER MIDEAST MARKET LONDON [MENL] -- Yugoslavia is lobbying the Middle East for clients and cooperation. Defense officials have held discussions with their counterparts in Israel and several Arab countries for the prospect of resumed sales to former Soviet clients. The discussions with Israel have focused on sales to Belgrade and joint weapons development and marketing. Belgrade's message to prospective Middle East clients is that Yugoslavia has retained its defense industrial capability. This, despite the massive NATO bombing of the country in 1999. The Middle East was a major market for Yugoslav weaponry from the late 1970s. Belgrade has sold such systems as the T-55 and M-84 tanks as well as the BMP infantry fighting vehicles. All of these systems have also been upgraded by Yugoslavia. The M-84 is an upgraded version of the T-72 tank. The tank is currently in several republics of the former Yugoslavia. In March, Yugoslavia attended the International Defense Exhibition, IDEX-2001, in Abu Dhabi. This was the first defense exhibition in which Belgrade has participated in since United Nations sanctions were lifted. Belgrade has also asked the UN Security Council to lift the weapons embargo imposed in March 1998. Yugoslavia is also interested in Israeli upgrades of Soviet-era weaponry. Delgations from both countries have exchanged visits and toured weapons factories. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
