 Dear Trac users,

 tomorrow, Monday 2010-03-08 at 21:30 UTC (22:30 CET, 16:30 EST) we're going
to move Trac (bugs.sugarlabs.org) from solarsail to sunjammer.
During the move Trac will be inaccessible. I apologize for the
inconvenience; there's no easy way to avoid it. We have taken measures to
keep the downtime as short as possible, though.

Yay! Great news!

Thanks,

Tomeu

After the move I'll be taking over Trac maintenance from bernie. I'd like to
use this opportunity to thank him for all he's done for SugarLabs - and
that's quite a lot! Since bernie has been quite good at keeping the various
services running most people didn't notice all the work he did in the
background (because things just keep running smoothly). Thanks, Bernie!

Thanks, and you forgot to add that Bernie needs to spend more time with
his family. I'm not yet quitting Sugar Labs :-)

Just handing off as much of our infrastructure as possible, so I can
concentrate on the Paraguayan deployment and... other infrastructure!

Would anyone step forward to take over any of the following featured
 items?

  * http://planet.sugarlabs.org/ (and switch it to Planet Venus!)

  * http://git.sugarlabs.org/ (major upgrade needed!)

  * http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/ (not a lot of work)

  * http://www.sugarlabs.org/ (major revamp needed, maybe with Drupal)

One more:

* move the localization mailing list from http://lists.laptop.org to
http://lists.sugarlabs.org

Regards,

Take any two items and win an exclusive Sugar Labs t-shirt. Hurry up!

Ok. Sayamindu, shall we coordinate on this?

We'd have to move the archives and add a forward rule for the old list
administrative addresses. It's been already done for a bunch of lists,
so you should find breadcrumbs on the laptop.org side.

Could be, but 60% of the sounds are pre recorded
voices that I record with peoples who makes the different voices of the
hiperhistory characters. This was made in this way because I do not
want the "robotic" pronuntation of the spanish voice in text to speech.
May be in english the voice pronuntation is better.-

Do they need to be dependencies (from a packaging PoV)? Always better
to discover if the needed component is there at startup/runtime and
offer the extra functionality... if possible... NM already does this
for a number of components (ppptp, etc).

Re: [Sugar-devel] 3g dependencies

It's a bad idea to do it for any bit in the networking stack.

If your only internet connection is over pptp, how can NM download and
install the pptp bits? I've personally had loads of trouble with this.

Same for 3g. I think they should be dependencies.

Yup, this is for documentation purposes, oriented towards packagers,
distributors and deployers. They will do whatever they want, but we
wanted to document these dependencies.

Do they need to be dependencies (from a packaging PoV)? Always better
to discover if the needed component is there at startup/runtime and
offer the extra functionality... if possible... NM already does this
for a number of components (ppptp, etc).

Yup, this is for documentation purposes, oriented towards packagers,
distributors and deployers. They will do whatever they want, but we
 wanted to document these dependencies.

 Tomeu

[Sugar-devel] Test recap: start new vs. resume

2010-03-08 Thread Christian Marc Schmidt
Hi all

Yesterday, Simon and Gerald filled the group in on the results of the
tests conducted recently to understand the merits of a home view with
start new as the default behavior for activity icons in the ring.

The interesting conclusion in both cases was that children don't
necessarily have an idea of whether they want to resume a previous
activity or start a new one *before* clicking the activity icon.
Rather, they start by simply wanting to engage with a particular
activity, and the decision whether to resume or start new follows. In
other words, the two functions are equal, without one taking
precedence over the other. Children appear to want the choice. We have
seen this expressed in the desire to want to start new or resume
directly from inside the activity, though there will be other possible
solutions.

Also noteworthy is that children don't discover the hover palette at
first, so it is questionable whether we can rely on the menu it's
current implementation to accomplish our goals for start new/resume.

I suggested that we reconvene on Saturday at 10:30 EST / 3:30 UTC to
brainstorm design solutions.

Thanks,

Christian

Re: [Sugar-devel] 3g dependencies

Only OS-side dependencies that shouldn't concern Sugar directly.

In Fedora 11, in addition to what we have already, we need an updated
udev (version 145), which also depends on a newer usbutils (0.82). This
is necessary to witch hybrid modems into comm mode.

I back-ported both these packages from Fedora 12. I didn't notice any
regressions so far. I've discussed this briefly with Harald Hoyer, who
is both the Fedora packager and the upstream maintainer.

If it turns out to be too risky for a F-11 update, we'll have to carry
these two packages around in the custom repositories for F11-XO1 and
F11-XO1.5.

I've also backported all the 10 Sugar patches:

 http://git.paraguayeduca.org/gitweb/users/bernie/sugar-0.84-3g.git

Plus two trivial sugar-artwork patches:

http://people.sugarlabs.org/bernie/patches/sugar/sugar-artwork/0001-Add-network-gsm-icon.patch

http://people.sugarlabs.org/bernie/patches/sugar/sugar-artwork/0002-eliminate-dupe-battery-charging-100.patch

The backported patches have just been massaged enough to apply with no
rejects. I tried to be diligent and not loose any bits in the process.
Martin (tch) and I are have still not done any serious debugging yet.

Wireless networking still works with these patches applied, and the
modem control panel also works. 3G devices show up in the panel, but you
can't connect just yet.

[Sugar-devel] request for help from activity authors

2010-03-08 Thread Tomeu Vizoso
Hi,

as part of the collaboration refactoring, I would appreciate it a lot
if activity authors could go through the API in the link below and
update the Used by lines if they are using any of it or know some
activity that makes use of it:

http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Development_Team/Presence_Service_Removal

We'll discuss afterwards how we can minimize the work required to
adapt activities to the new code.

Thanks,

Tomeu

Oh, and we have to add ModemManager to the build, of course.
