help getting it upstream.

 Hi,

is there any interest in a deployment somewhere for a screenreader
that allows blind people use the Sugar UI when paired with keyboard
 navigation?

I think most of the pieces are there, but without knowing how it could
be used I cannot really test.

there's speechdispatcher in fedora that is used by kde and gnome and I
currently maintain it. It was also at some point used by olpc as the
spec file use to have olpc specifics in it. There's been renewed
interest with it upstream and I'm working to get it into better shape
for F-14 and once its cleaned up I'll push updates back to F-13 and
 probably F-12.

[Sugar-devel] Add dependency on pyXDG

2010-08-25 Thread Simon Schampijer
Hi,

pyxdg [1] provides facilities to access freedesktop.org standards. We
would like to add it as a dependency to the sugar platform.

Real life example [2]: In sugar-jhbuild this will not discover that
these files are not under sugar/jhbuild/install/share but can be found
under /usr/share. pyxdg provides means to get a list of all the
available paths.

Comments?

[Sugar-devel] Bump Python dependency from 2.5 to 2.6

2010-08-25 Thread Simon Schampijer
Hi,

Is it sane to switch to this Python version for the Sugar platform? More

hence 0.84. Not sure for the other distributions...

If depending on 2.6 isn't desirable, we can use __future__ imports.

[Sugar-devel] Sugar Digest 2010-08-25

2010-08-25 Thread Walter Bender
==Sugar Digest==

1. I wrote about a discussion with John Gilmore in April
[http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Archive/Current_Events/2010-04-01]. When
John asked how many patches have been contributed by Sugar end-users,
I responded that community members have contributed patches but that I
was unaware of any patches contributed by children. I went on to argue
that it is not relevant whether or not patches are submitted or
accepted. The learning happens in creating the patch and in submitting
it or sharing it with a friend. Hopefully, Sugar has instilled in
children and their teachers the sense that they can be expressive with
computing.

That said, the children are being creative with Sugar in ways that I
had not anticipated. For example, Bernie shared
[http://codewiz.org/wiki/pictures/sugar/deployment/paraguay/caacupe/scratcheros/3.jpg]
from Caacupé of a surprising and wonderful use of the nickname field
in Sugar. It may not be a patch to the Python code, but it certainly
is a user contribution that extends and enhances Sugar, a great first
step for a sixth grader.

2. In the US, there is a mid-term election in November. At Sugar Labs,
we will be holding our mid-term election in October in order to fill
three oversight board positions. (You may recall that we agreed to
stagger the two-year terms of the board so that 3 or 4 positions are
up for reelection every year.)

We have several tasks associated with election:

(1) Updating our member list
[http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Sugar_Labs/Members/List|, which is used
to generate ballots. If you are already a member of Sugar Labs, your
name will appear on the list and you will receive a ballot by email in
October. If you are not a member and would like to be, please contact
Luke Faraone, our membership administrator, who will add you to the
list. Recall that the requirement to be a member of Sugar Labs is to
engage with the project and the community. This can be as simple as
asking a question.

(2) Gathering together a list of nominees. If you are interested in
joining the Sugar oversight board, please contact me and I will add
your name to the ballot. Also, please prepare a position statement
about your candidacy on your User page in the wiki. There are no
restrictions in regard to whom can run, e.g., whether you were born in
Kenya or the United States, you are eligible.

===In the community===

3. There will be an OLPC/Sugar/Realness summit October 21 – 24 in San
Francisco. The summit is being hosted by the San Francisco Bay Area
OLPC community. More details are available at
[http://olpcsf.org/CommunitySummit2010/].

===Tech Talk ===

4. Last week, we entered Feature Freeze for Sugar Release 0.90. This
week we entered UI Freeze. Next week is String Freeze. Hard code
freeze starts on September 13. Simon Schampijer is once again pulling
together contributions from the community; the new release is looking
great.

Not sure if I am the only one still confused here: is presence-service

0.90.x be used for 0.88 branch and 0.89.x be used for 0.90 branch?

Could you perhaps spell out explicitly for all Sugar branches which

[Sugar-devel] [Design]Control Panel max_column value

2010-08-25 Thread usr
Hi all,
I was working on Bug-Ubuntu (LP #617582).[1]
Now while fixing the bug I narrowed down to the controlpanel/gui.py
file . In that file the value of _MAX_COLUMNS was set to 6. After
discussing with alsroot, we decided that it should not be hardcoded.
Instead its value should be assigned on the fly according to the
screen width. In the end we set the value to
?   gtk.gdk.screen_width() /(3* style.GRID_CELL_SIZE)or
?   gtk.gdk.screen_width()/ 200
is solving the issue at my end. I have tested this by opening the
emulator in different resolutions.

I request you that if you have a better solution for this problem then
please let me know.

In another discussion on this bug, it seemed like we had reached
agreement that the core part of the issue was that the text that acts

(i.e. it does not get wrapped). In my opinion you should solve this

[Sugar-devel] video conversion tools

2010-08-25 Thread Sean Linton
Can anyone comment on the best video conversion tools for Sugar, and how
best to install them?

If I understand correctly, you want to install a tool on your normal
desktop computer than will convert videos to a format that is easily
played by Sugar. The appropriate video format for Sugar is Ogg Theora,
and there are many tools that can produce it. Maybe the easiest is Firefogg:

1. Start Firefox (install it if you don't have it already)
2. In Firefox, go to http://firefogg.org/make/

This website will prompt you to install the Firefogg extension. Once it
is installed, you can convert your videos by going to
http://firefogg.org/make/

Re: [Sugar-devel] running sugar in jhbuild

2010-08-25 Thread Erik Blankinship
I continue to have trouble getting jhbuild to run. I hope the community can
help me with installation best practices so that all new developers can
easily contribute.

I am on a fresh f13 installation on a laptop that has run sugar-jhbuild in
the past.

I removed my previous jhbuild and git'd a fresh clone per the instructions
on the wiki.

When I tried to run the emulator, I got this [new] error:
Window manager warning: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily
unavailable) on display ':30'.

Not sure what to do about that (related to GConf-dbus?) I tried the
workaround described by Simon on #2142.

Unfortunately, I crash in the build process:
