Christoph,
I fixed a copy and paste error in my previous email.

To reveal the spelling checker popup menu open a terminal session and
use vi to edit /home/olpc/Activities/Write.activity/keybindings.xml

change the line

to

change

Since this topic came again up while talking to someone who is working on a
smaller deployment in Central America I was wondering whether anybody here
knows whether the lack of being able to use the spellchecker is indeed a bug
or intended to be like this?

2010-08-28 Thread Christoph Derndorfer
James,

thanks for the update and explanation.

I can't wait to see the finalized version becoming available!

FYI: I had planned to buy two copies, one for my own shelf and another one
to pass on to some students who are likely to be working on a Sugar activity
as part of a university course this next semester:-)

In any case, thanks a lot for all your hard work on this project, I can't
even begin to thank you for how useful it is.

Cheers,

Re: [Sugar-devel] "Make Your Own Sugar Activities!" is on Lulu

2010-08-28 Thread James Simmons
Christoph,

Normally books on Lulu are proofed by the author before being sold.
For some reason the book was put on the store right away. When I got
my own copy I found that the type was too small to read, and the font
for the code samples was even worse. We therefore temporarily removed
it from the store until I could prepare a new PDF with larger fonts.
This is more work than you might think because I have to wrap the
lines of all the code samples to make them fit on the page with a 12
point Courier font, and there were other issues too.

I've been working steadily on fixing the code samples and fooling
around with stylesheet options to make the next version of the book
worth having. I have also gotten a talented artist to design a new
cover illustration. When the end result of all this is finished the
book will be available again. Just be happy you didn't get one like I
got!

Thanks for your patience.

I just wanted to purchase it because shipping to the US is so much cheaper
than to Europe but I can't seem to find it on the store...

If all you're doing with Fedora is testing Sugar, then it's probably
easiest install from scratch again. Depending on whether you want the
latest stable release (13) or bleeding edge, you would have to go through
two or three upgrade procedures, each time downloading (almost?) all of
the installed packages.
If you've customised your system, the updates might still be the better
choice, of course. Especially if you don't remember what you changed. ;)

This means I need to add a new dependency to sugar-jhbuild (as will distro
packagers once Sugar 0.90 is released), adding about 6MB on my XO (and
potentially more on other systems). What's the rationale for this change?
The commit comment is rather sparse.

Actually I was rather glad to be (almost) rid of Telepathy in
sugar-jhbuild. What are the minimum versions

a) Sugar 0.90 needs
b) you would recommend using?

Debian [1], Fedora 12+, Ubuntu Karmic+ [2] all contain
telepathy-mission-control 5.3.1+. I'd rather drop Fedora 11 (already EOL)
and Ubuntu Jaunty (EOL in about a month [3]) than build Telepathy from
source.
