[Sugar-devel] Sugar 0.94 localization status

2011-09-02 Thread Chris Leonard
Dear Colleagues,

As you can see from the two columns in the attached spreadsheet (glu94
and fru94) we have an urgent need for additional localization efforts,
even in the European languages where coverage has historically been
high. In part, the lag in Fructose L10n completion stats can be
attributed to the recent addition of a large number of strings to that
project. Nonetheless, the string freeze is approaching quickly with
the final release not very long after that and there is no time to
waste in completing these two projects for the upcoming Sugar 0.94
release.

http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/0.94/Roadmap#Schedule

Note glu94 is the current Glucose project
http://translate.sugarlabs.org/projects/glucose/

Note fru94 is the current Fructose project
http://translate.sugarlabs.org/projects/fructose/

I would like to request that *anyone* with any ability to localize
strings consider taking some time to make a L10n contribution in the
next few weeks. Besides strings completed, the second most welcome
L10n contribution is the recruitment of other localizers. I believe
we will need all hands on deck to bring this release to a respectable
level of completion prior to the final release at the end of the
month, so please consider how you might best be able to help the Sugar
0.94 release reach it's widest possible audience.

[Sugar-devel] Gtk3 Hackfest, Praha 2011, news updates

2011-09-02 Thread Simon Schampijer

Hi,

two major changes have recently occurred in Sugar's underlying
technologies. Firstly, GTK+ 2 has been obsoleted by GTK+ 3, and GNOME is
now based on GTK+ 3. Secondly, PyGTK, the underlying Python library that
Sugar uses to call into GTK+, has been deprecated in favor of PyGObject
Introspection (hereafter PyGI). More background info can be found at
Features/GTK3 [1]. Goal of this hackfest is to remove the biggest
blockers before we can start the porting and potentially start porting
over.

== Sponsoring regional trips ==
This Hackfest is sponsored by the OLPC Foundation. If you need help for
funding your travel, please send an email to simon AT laptop DOT org
before the 8th of October 2011. OLPCF won't be able to refund more than
150 USD per trip, and we will fund regional (european) travels in
priority [2].

Regards,
   Simon

I believe there are 6 key things that need to be done in/for Sugar to
enable use of the GNOME accessibility work for folks with vision
impairments.  Others more expert in the specific details may correct/amend
my comments.  I believe the 6 things are:

The shift of AT-SPI from CORBA to DBUS (in process, not yet completed,
but builds of at-spi2 are in the GNOME code repository and if someone would
start playing and testing with it on the OLPC, that'd be great!)

I tested the very recent bits of at-spi2 in sugar-jhbuild and they
seemed to work fine in that accerciser was able to navigate through
the controls of the desktop window and of activities (applications).

Implementation of ATK by the Sugar UI components (this is the
accessibility API that screen readers like Orca use)

Accerciser showed that it could not go into the HippoCanvas widget
that is used in some fundamental parts of the Sugar shell and also
inside our browser. The browser is moving from xulrunner to webkitgtk+
which I expect to fare much better there. About HippoCanvas, I have
been experimenting with replacing it with custom GtkContainers and
dropping Hippo completely seemed very doable.

Creating / adapting a magnifier service on Sugar for Orca.  This may be
a fairly trivial port of gnome-mag (non-COMPOSITE edition), or it may be a
  complete re-write

I have no idea of what this entails, but as we have kept quite close
to GNOME's architecture, I expect the fairly trivial port to suffice.

Porting Orca to Sugar.  This may be fairly trivial, or it may involve a
  new Sugar-style GUI, etc.

Tried out Orca in Sugar and it was able to read windows titles,
buttons labels, etc. What GUI would it have other than a configuration
parameter for starting it automatically at startup?

Adding theme support go Sugar for vision impairments - things like a
large-print theme, and inverse theme, etc.

The Uruguayan deployment has customized their builds in this direction
but I believe they need help upstreaming it.

Ensure 100% keyboard operability of Sugar

Hippo is also the roadblock here.

Tomeu - are there folks in sugar-devel who have cycles to work on these
  things?

No idea, I started this thread to find out :)

Thanks a lot for the great insights!

 Tomeu

Ok, I can help you get in touch with the GNOME team that works on
accessibility if you want. They are very dedicated, friendly and
talented bunch. Collabora and other companies also provide services
  related to accessibility and GNOME.

But nobody else than us is going to fix accessibility in Sugar so
that's why I'm asking if anybody here has interest in working on this.
The first need is finding someone who can tell us what needs to be
improved in Sugar so it can be used by people with no or very low
  vision.

 Comment:

Try removing ~/.i18n to unbreak Sugar (show the activities again).

If your language wasn't listed in the Control Panel section, trying to set
it from the command line is bound to break things. We should prevent that
(i.e. not change to setting if the language isn't supported), but I'd
rather get rid of the CP code (it has other warts, too) than fix it.

What version of Sugar is this, BTW? 11.2 isn't a valid Sugar version.

[Sugar-devel] [DESIGN] Open link in a new tab

2011-09-02 Thread Simon Schampijer

Hi,

while we work on polishing the tabs in Browse it would be great to
adjust as well the link palette and add an option for opening the link
in a new tab. Something like [1]. A bit of brainstorming:

- which should be the wording of the option Firefox has ('Open Link in
New Tab')?

- which icon should the option have (maybe a '+', maybe the Browse icon
with a +...)?

- which order should the items have? The first like in FF? should the
first option be separated by a line?

While we are here, have you considered doing the tab button in the toolbar
like in the terminal,
opening a subtoolbar with more options?
I think this will be consistent, and you do not need add the close button to
the tabs.

commits made by user Pootle?

I do not want to flood the list with every eToys commit, only those
from user Pootle.

In addition, Aleksey modified the subject coming from git to the format

Commit to [chat] by [anderson861.] for [mn]

The first bracketed entry is the po file name, the second is the
lang-admin using the commit priv and the third is the language code.
This makes it easy t ovisually scan the subject lines, as well as t
ocopy paste from the message list and parse it with a spreadsheet.

This makes it easy t ovisually scan the subject lines, as well as t
ocopy paste from the message list and parse it with a spreadsheet.

I can prefix it by Commit to [etoys] but the rest of the subject is just the
first line of the log message (Commit from Sugar Labs: Translation System by
user cjl.: 7 of 7 messages translated (0 fuzzy).)

That is, unless someone can come up with a more suitable post-commit hook
invocation than this:

svnnotify \
   --repos-path $REPOS \
   --revision $REV \
   --from comm...@etoys.squeak.org \
   --to-email-map '^trunk/po/'=pootle-comm...@lists.sugarlabs.org \
   --subject-prefix 'Commit to [etoys]' \
   --header 'Repository: http://etoys.squeak.org/svn' \
   --attach-diff \
   --max-diff-length 5

Hi

Reading the through the upgrade process I think I will leave this machine
alone. I dont want to risk the upgrade not working and returning the machine
without a usable OS. It is used by his daughter.

Hi... Exactly what I was going to suggest. Is there a reason you friend
hasn't updated? Check with him first and, if he doesn't mind go for a newer

maybe 860 since 874 is very new and still may have a few bugs.

406.xx is far too old, I don't think any of the activities available on
Sugar Labs would be particularly compatible. Upgrade to a later build.

Yes, you need experience before taking such a move with confidence.

There is a save-nand feature built into the firmware that can take a
backup of the existing build and journal for later restore. But I've no
idea what version it began to work well with, and no idea what firmware
version you have on the XO-1.
