[Sugar-devel] multi-homeview feature

2013-06-21 Thread Walter Bender
I did a clean [1] up of Daniel Francis's Multi Home View feature [2]
yesterday and in the process tried to address two issues:

(1) The original code had many redundancies. The new version is
reasonably tight (although I am certain to get push back in the review
process).

(2) There was some concern that this feature would cause confusion
among our users (despite its being written in response to several
requests from the field).

To address #2, I made the number of home views configurable. By
default, there is just one home view, as is currently the case. A
gconf settting is used to add additional home views. (In gconf, I
maintain a list of icons to use for the view toolbar and to use for
marking favorites in the list view.) A view is generated for each icon
in the list.

I posit that this is a reasonable compromise: the default behavior
does not change, but deployments that want to exploit this feature can
use gconftool to set custom icons and views. (And since it is in user
space, enterprising users can also customize the number of views.)

Reactions?

Oh you seem to have automake 1.13.2 installed. Ubuntu 13.04 has 1.11
though. Did you install it yourself somewhere on the path?

[Sugar-devel] can this be duplicated by FLOSS? is this similar to Sugar Network?

2013-06-21 Thread Kevin Mark
Hi OLPC SG and Sugar-Devel Folks,
This[0] is an interesting situation that these Australian schools find
themselves in. Many of the mentioned services found on the Wikipedia page sound
like available technologies from FLOSS that need a bit of integration to
provide a similar unified project. I don't know the full details and have not
expierenced the Sugar Network or the XS in use but are those products partial
solutions to this? (eg. Moodle, schooltools, etc.) Could one be developed to
meet most of the Ultranet goals?

If these folks had invested in FLOSS solutions funded by a government, it might
have had an initial upfront cost that was more, and required maintaince but
would not be a product that could cancelled in the way a 3rd party project like
this was and would have allowed the users to export their existing
metadata/data rather than lose valuable content and invested time. Not to
mention the possible volunteer contribution and use by other school.

Is anyone interested to pick these up? I think we need a new owner here,
otherwise the features should be punted from 0.100.

Great – yes that sounds like a good compromise while still supporting requests
