Re: [Sugar-devel] Social Help proposal
Sugar currently has static activity help. You get there by frame activity icon help. I think it would be nice to have them all in one dialog, maybe a bit like the view source with 2 icons at the top. @Sam, that's a brilliant idea. I will make the appropriate changes to have static Help and Social Help all in one window. Anyway, this means that if the social help project is selected, either one of our proposals will be selected and the other will be rejected Yep, unfortunately that's the deal. Nevertheless discussions, collaboration and bringing up different ideas will help create a better product in the end :) 2. I however do not know whether the addition of IRC is necessarily a good idea. IRC is, well, stateless. I agree with everything you said about IRC and have suggested that IRC might be left as an option along with the discussion platform because of rather small advantages. It is faster - unfortunately some people will not want to read previous posts or try to figure out the category they set up their question. Posting in this case results in duplicates (behavior often seen on stack exchange websites). If one has a short clear question, IRC is still a valid solution. The problem here arises when the same questions are asked all over again (of course a forum wins it all in this case) and it become a nuisance to those who answer it. About channels: imho one channel specifically dedicated to social help should be enough. 3. It appears to me that Ana hasn't finalized whether she is going to use Discourse. Indeed i didn't make a decision. All I wanted is to provide a diff between one other option, which seems plausible to me. I tried reaching out on the IRC but there was no response there. Please comment below. People are social and learning is social. Having a forum for sharing ideas and help is invaluable -- especially in light of the decentralized nature of the Sugar community. While the developer community is comfortable with IRC, we have not been successful in getting our user community to use it: they are seeming more comfortable with web tools (e.g. there is a large community of teachers using Facebook to discuss Sugar.) It would of course be better to have a FOSS solution. But also one that didn't require a lot of maintenance and support by the Sugar developer community. Hence, a connection to an existing FOSS platform would be attractive. regards. -walter Anyway, this is the first draft. Please comment on the discussions page if anything is required in the proposal. [Sugar-devel] Interest in Platipy Project as a part of GSoC '14

I came across the Platipy project listed in the ideas section for Google Summer Of Code 2014 and find it very interesting to be taken as a GSoC project. I have been using python since last two years as a part of coursework assignments, and many projects. I have had used Pygame and know the basics of it (learnt it here http://inventwithpython.com/pygame/chapters/).I have also had experience in game development with openGL. Here is my github profile https://github.com/gauravp94, listing all my past projects. I have been an active contributor for the Sugarlabs community since a few months. Currently, I am going over the documentationhttp://platipy.readthedocs.org/en/latest/index.htmlof Spyral and I will read more on PyGame and will set up the example.activity by tomorrow and I will keep the community updated with my progress in it. I would be really grateful if the mentors could give me some pointers on 1. How to proceed with the project as of now ? 2. What are the major hurdles that need to be accomplished ? 3. Are there tasks for Spyral that can be done now? (so that I could get familiarized with the specific code and work on it 4. I have been an active contributor for the Sugarlabs community since a few months. (I have done a few small bug fixes and also added a verbosity feature for sugar-toolkit-gtk3 and also reported some bugs and added some points to the docs.) It would be great, it someone could clarify some of my questions. I am not clear on -- 1. How should I approach this project, make web activities or look at the Cordova code and ask the Cordova folks on how to make a new container. 2. Any other useful pointers for the project, that might help? 3. Any existing documentation/ code that has been done in regard to this project? Till then, I will be looking at the code for web activities in sugar and also make a sample web activity. As soon as I get some instructions, I will get on to work on it and keep this thread updated about my progress. Re: [Sugar-devel] Boot Menu for XO
Limited disk space may be a problem, yes. You might fix that by hard linking a copy of Activities from one user directory to another. sudo cp -prl /home/olpc/Activities /home/me/ The links don't cost much disk space. You can prove this by checking disk space with df before and after. Curiously, Sugar doesn't detect any new activities added via this mechanism, so I had to rm -rf .sugar and restart.
