I have made some major progress in the past week in the project *Sugarizer
Activity Set*. To be precise, I have been porting *Moon* activity. I have
prepared a demo

for
the same.

I would like to know other's opinions, especially the project mentor, sir
Lionel Laské and sir Michaël Ohayon, regarding my current work and what all
changes are needed.

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSOC 2016 query regarding project : Redesign and recreate Sugar Labs webappearance

2016-03-10 Thread James Cameron
I agree with Sam; being able to try it out, and engaging new people,
are the critical goals.

The web site is http://sugarlabs.org/

The content should guide and inform people who have never heard of
Sugar or activities.

Other web sites have used HTML5 features and style sheets to make them
accessible on desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone browsers. Good idea,
but not if it makes the site less accessible to environments where
Sugar is used; environments with low bandwidth internet.

Sugarizer might be used for try it out. A prepared virtual machine
would be useful. But without easy tools for preparing bootable
drives, trying it out on a computer is difficult.

The site has links to activities-2.sugarlabs.org, which currently
return 502 Bad Gateway from nginx.

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSOC 2016 query regarding project : Redesign and recreate Sugar Labs webappearance

2016-03-10 Thread Sam Parkinson

Hello,

I didn't write the project idea, but I did argue with lots with people
about the website before.

Really I think that it is not about how the website looks, it is about
how the users experience the website. So right now, we have a website
with pictures right. But we don't have easy tools to create
sugar-on-a-stick liveusbs. We don't have any evil email stealing
things [1] that let's us put people through email series so that they
become engaged with Sugar a convert from a random teacher/student using
it to somebody involved in the community. Maybe making a better native
app to do the sugar-on-a-stick creation, and creating an email
mini-course that we introduce people to sugar with could be a great
project?

Thanks,
Sam

Hey Aaron! Nice to meet you too! Thank you for such prompt response.

I'm not sure of your IRC name. Please share it with me.

Yes, I was facing this issue after running the following step:

$ sudo mongod --fork --port 27018 --logpath /home/root/mongo.log

But now, it got fix itself after restarting just now. I will still share
the logs when I got this error.

http://pastebin.com/rKKb14Sa

/home/manrajsingh/mongo.log

These seem to be working. No error while running them.
I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 64bit.

[Sugar-devel] Music Blocks | Interesting code from Google that would be helpful for widgets

2016-03-10 Thread Devin
This email is for those interested in the widget GSoC '16 project.

Hi,

Check this out:

https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Experiments

...some of these are similar to what we want for the widgets for Music
Blocks...

This is very, very similar to what I have in mind for the "*pitch
staircase*" widget.

https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Strings

Each node divides the string by a ratio and the visual feedback is
proportionally accurate (e.g. dividing the string in half creates an
octave). This is one of the first things we want for the pitch staircase.

https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Harmonics

This is something else I want:

1. for the pitch staircase (but not as harmonics, rather as new
fundamental pitch--the wavelength corresponds to new fundamental).

(icing on the cake) 2. A harmonic widget which would be almost identical
to what is here that would output harmonic blocks (yet to be created)

This is not so much like the *rhythm rulers*, but may be helpful to see:

https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Rhythm

It does not have functionality to:
1. add new beats
2. divide beats

The *piano roll* and *melody maker* are like our matrix -- except our
matrix is better! What we have here is a "one time wonder", a "one trick
pony" -- it doesn't show accurately what the pitch is. It is only for
instant gratification. Not a learning tool.

(I haven't tried mic function--maybe that has something interesting, but
I do not have patience for it now)

This is not like any widget I imagined but is interesting. Maybe it
would be most like the *free pitch slider***widget

https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Sound-Waves

this may be similar, but my chromium browser (or computer) is not
allowing me to see it:

https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Spectrogram

...what is good about this is it allows people unfamiliar with music to
have accurate visual feedback of the sound AND that is good for
musicians, too, b/c *multiple ways of thinking about the same thing is
GOOD! :)

*This may be interesting and helpful for some kind of integration with
solfege, but not one of the widgets I designed and IMHO not a priority
(but will put here anyway for the record)

Hello! It's nice to meet you, Manraj! I'm a web developer in San
Francisco of the US. I saw your message in IRC, so you can ping me there
if it's easier for you. I've heard feedback that the server setup
instructions don't always work and they're structured more like you
would for deployment rather than development. Hopefully with your help
we can make them a bit better.

I assume this is from after running the following step?

$ sudo mongod --fork --port 27018 --logpath /home/root/mongo.log

Exit 100 is an unhandled exception in mongo, the database. Can you post
the log from /home/manrajsingh/mongo.log ?

Also, after you post the logs, would you try this command instead?

   $ mkdir ~/mongodb
   $ mongod --dbpath /home/manrajsingh/mongodb --port 27018 --logpath
/home/manrajsingh/mongo.log

Finally, what distro are you using?

[Sugar-devel] Introduction | Interest in Sugarizer Project | Doubts regarding build server setup

2016-03-10 Thread Manraj Singh
Hello community members,

I'm Manraj Singh, studying in Netaji Subhas Institute Of Technology(Delhi
University). I'm an Open Source Enthusiast and have previously contributed
to jQuery, Mozilla and Privly. I also have prior experience in working for
startups like Zomato and Refiral and have a good competitve coding profile.

I'm interested in working on "Sugarizer Server Dashboard" project for
Google Sumer Of Code, 2016 and currently getting server to work after
cloning the repository. I have loads of experience in Php, JS, Python and
Web Development and have worked on similar project before.

I'm facing an issue. I have reached step "Run MongoDB and Sugarizer Server"
as mentioned here
https://github.com/llaske/sugarizer/blob/master/README.md#server but it is
exiting with error:

```
about to fork child process, waiting until server is ready for connections.
forked process: 28417
all output going to: /home/manrajsingh/mongo.log
ERROR: child process failed, exited with error number 100
```
Please help, as StackOverflow answers don't seem to work as well.

Manraj Singh Grover
