[Sugar-devel] Regarding issues with soundcard in XO
Hello guys, I was trying to run TamTamEdit and Simple Music Keyboard on XO and am stuck on this weird set of errors I am getting. Some background: I can hear the splash sound on the startup so the sound card is in place. But as soon as I am in the sugarlabs environment, I cannot: - change the sound volume using the widget - open alsamixer: It says "mixer: no such file or directory" - The log for the tamtam says that ALSA failed to find the sound card and that somehow crashes the application. - I tried using alsactl to init the soundcard but again gives the same error. "Cannot find soundcard 0" Do you have any insights on this? Apparently the soundcard is not properly configured and I have no idea how to go about fixing this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- Thanks Aneesh Dogra (lionaneesh) ___ Sugar-devel mailing list Sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel

[Sugar-devel] [sugar-html-core] Some questions regarding the bus.js API.
Hello list, I was just looking over some code in bus.js and I noticed that we are actually using a stack to prioritize and keep track of our send requests. The array which you name as "queue" is actually used as a stack. Here's what I think is happening: Suppose I send 3 consecutive requests: The script adds them in the "queue" variable as: [1, 2, 3] but in start we are doing: while (queue.length > 0) { socket.send(queue.pop()); } so, we send the requests in order: 3, 2, 1 Hence, the last request made later gets the first priority. Is this intended by design? -- Thanks Aneesh Dogra (lionaneesh) ___ Sugar-devel mailing list Sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel

[Sugar-devel] Google Summer of Code - Slots assigned
Hello list, We have been assigned 8 slots for Google summer of code. We have received about 37 applications. Out of these around 20 applications are weak and we don't really need to care about those. We have around 17 good enough applications and we need to cut down that to 8. I think the best thing would be to just discuss this over an IRC meeting. I don't really know how is one supposed to setup a meeting and how the timings are really decided. Maybe someone else can guide me on this? We can host a meeting, invite all the possible mentors maybe even some students to add something if you need to and then make our decisions. How about it? -Aneesh ___ Sugar-devel mailing list Sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel
Re: [Sugar-devel] Chat Activity with translation
Hey Prannoy, Its good that you decided to do a GSOC project for us. Thanks! For "Chat Activity with translation" project you need to first of all research on the translation system options we have. "Meeting" uses Apertium, is it the best alternative available? Then you need to form a blue print on how you would the chat activity interact with the translation server? For this particular task you'll be doing more work with translation systems and the server end, than the sugar activity itself. We'll be requiring an easily callable translation API at the server end. The client (i.e the activity) will sent GET/POST requests to the server containing in them the text to be translated. The server should then respond with GET/POST requests containing in them the translated text. The client intercepts the request and displays the translated text. Important trade-offs to compare when searching for a good machine translation system: 1) Speed 2) Server Load/Requirements 3) Language Pairs On Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 11:54 AM, Prannoy M wrote: > Hi, > I would like to work on the proposal 'Chat Activity with translation' for > GSoC.I'm a first time GSoCer and am really interested to contribute. Can > someone help me get started? > I tried running sugar-emulator on ubuntu 12.04 but lots of activities were > not working. So now I'm installing by the virtual box method. > > Regards, > *M.Prannoy* > > > ___ > Sugar-devel mailing list > Sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org > http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel > > -- Thanks Aneesh Dogra (lionaneesh) ___ Sugar-devel mailing list Sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel
Re: [Sugar-devel] Reg : GSOC Contribution
You'll probably have to prove that you are competent to complete the project through some qualification tasks. Example for the "IRC activity fixes" project you'll have to do some research on existing python-irc libraries, chose the most suitable, do some small Gtk3 fixes, write a basic wrapper to your chosen library, provide blueprints on how would you implement the ideas. Mainly the purpose of the qualification tasks would be to check whether you and the mentor can communicate well and will you be able to complete the project on time. P.S: Its just my opinion, other mentors may have other criterion. Definitely worth implementing. But I would deem it as secondary, if time permits we could probably work on this. The most important features to work on will be: 1) Multithreading: The IRC Activity very slow when compared to other IRC clients. 2) Alert on highlight 3) Whois info 4) Backlog 5) Multiple connections (presently you can only connect to one server, so if I want to connect to 2 channels say one on mibbit and one on freenode. I can't do that in IRC.) 6) Theming (would like to add, but again its secondary) 7) Encoding options. Not everyone speaks english on IRC, try going to a chinese channel using the IRC activity and see what happens. Does it shows the chinese characters properly? I haven't tested this myself, but I reckon it won't work. 8) Save chat history in journal. (Very very important) I would encourage you to open up your favorite IRC client and check what features it provides, and would it be useful if we add it in the IRC Activity? I've found library[2] that could be used to replace deprecated Urk. > Also implementing notifications and improving performance will be my > priority. The library you suggested, although better than urk, hasn't been updated since 2012-09-29. Which makes me skeptical if this is the best alternate available? Libraries tend to later act as bottlenecks. For eg: Urk makes multithreading very difficult because it itself is single threaded. That's why I want you select the best all-python irc library out there. I will be grateful if you could give me some feedback to ideas provided. > > Thanks, > Michal > > [1] http://dmpgsoc.azalayah.net/ > [2] http://sourceforge.net/projects/python-irclib/files/ > > dmp@freenode > ___ Sugar-devel mailing list Sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel
