Re: [Sugar-devel] [Sur] [SLOBS] meeting reminder

2021-01-05 Thread Claudia Urrea
Walter and all,

I just received confirmation about a meeting with the new minister of
education in Belize. I am in the PI of a three year project with the
government and I need to be there to present. The meeting is scheduled for
2:30 pm for 30 min. I will do my best to come back, but I can't miss this
meeting.

I apologize for the last minute change, but this is a significant 3 year
long project with a team of over 15 people from MIT.

I will keep you all posted.

Re: [Sugar-devel] [IAEP] New logo for Sugar Labs

2020-03-04 Thread Claudia Urrea
Thank you all for the hours and the effort to design these logos. This
somehow assumes we want to change the logo... perhaps we do, but it would
be great to hear the story behind each of the designs, so we can use it for
branding. We also need to understand the assumptions that were made
regarding the existing logo, what needs to be preserved and what needs to
change, etc. (I have been part of a re-branding process and we began with a
study of the current logo and detected opportunities for the design.)

Would it be ok for the groups to record a short video with those ideas?
Should the community vote on the existing logo vs. these designs?

Thanks again,

Claudia

Jaskirat has worked hard to accommodate the concerns raised by several

 Hi SLOBs,

Jaskirat Singh is traveling to the GSoC mentor summit. Because he's
coming from India, he's asked us to prepay a number of expenses, which
we're happy to do as long as you approve.

First, he has requested an advance of 43,700.00 INR (about $625) to
cover expenses related to getting his visa and ground transportation in
 India. He provided this budget:

 VISA Fees - 11200 INR
Travelling agent and Consultant charges - 7000 INR
As i have to travel for the VISA Documentation and Interview to other
states so for that i have 2 dates consecutively ( VISA appointment letter
attached), So for that Hotel Charge for 1 night and 2 days - 7000 INR
 Meals for this purpose ( 2 days ) - 2000 INR (approx.)
Taxi fare from my location to the US Embassy - 4000 INR + toll and
 taxes ( approx ).
As per the rules VISA Documentation and Interview takes place at
different place and VISA Collection gets issued from the different location
which is the part of another state, so for that Taxi Fare - 2500 INR
Taxi fare from Home to Airport - 5000 INR + toll and taxes ( approx )
Taxi fare from airport to back Home - 5000 INR + toll and taxes (
 approx )

Please let us know whether or not you approve sending him money for
these expenses ahead of time. We'll still ask him to provide receipts
after the fact as required for all travel under our policies.

Note that, between this advance and the flight he's asking us to book,
Jaskirat's travel is likely to exceed $1,000, meaning some of it will be
paid out of Sugar's general fund and not covered by the money coming from
Google for GSoC. Please let us know what total travel budget you're
 willing to set for Jaskirat.

 Thank you,

[Sugar-devel] Fwd: Charla de Sugar Labs sobre Brecha de genero - Junio 12, 2014

Subject: Charla de Sugar Labs sobre Brecha de genero - Junio 12, 2014
To: learn...@lists.sugarlabs.org

Re: [Sugar-devel] [Grassroots-l] A simple way for teachers to review children works

2012-09-26 Thread Claudia Urrea
Lionel,

Have you tried the Portfolio Activity? teachers can ask the
students to start putting together their work of the wee,
reflecting on what they did and learn, and organizing a
portfolio. The Portfolio can be shared with others (teachers
and other students) for comments.

FInally, the Portfolio can be saved as a PDF (or a movie,
not developed yet) for teachers to collect. After reviewing,
teachers may ask for individual objects to loo deeper.

I hope this helps!

 Hi all,

One of the main feedback from teachers in our small XO deployment at
Saint-Denis (a poor suburb of Paris) is related to children works review.

The teacher would like a way to control and review works of children.

Generally they ask to children to write a text or something else and they
want a way to check if children have completed the work.

They try to use an USB key but it’s too long (about fifteen minutes at
least). More, because we’ve got only 25 XO for 50 children, two children
share the same XO and there is a risk that a child delete the work of the
 previous one (it already happens).

I don’t know if it could help here but we don’t have a XS server installed.
BTW to be honest, I’m afraid than if we have one teachers don’t have
 knowledge to use it.

Because each XO has an Internet connection, we are thinking to develop a
small activity to allow children to upload their works to a web server where
 teachers could retrieve it.

 - Do you know how other deployments handle teachers review ?

 - Does the XS could be a solution to this problem ?

 - Is there any existing activity matching the idea to upload
content to a web server ?

 Any advice is welcome.

 Best regards from France.

 Lionel.

Re: [Sugar-devel] Some questions concerning saving methods on sugar

2010-09-20 Thread Claudia Urrea
Alberto,

The newest version of Scratch (16) allows you to save and retrieve projects
using
the regular folder UI. You can download it from
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Scratch

You can also import pictures and sound from the journal, and download
projects
from the Scratch website. Please let me know if you have any problems.

Best,

Claudia

  Hello,

I've been adapting an application to use as an activity, and I have some
questions about the way to save on sugar.

At first, I tried to just create a directory inside my Activity folder
especially made for saving files, but it did not work, because of the access
permissions to it, and, although we could simply manually change the folder
permission for writing on that folder, we would have to do it for every
single OLPC we installed our activity into and we didn't want that.

Then, we started trying with the journal. Everything was going fine,
until we discovered that another sugar activity, Scratch, implemented saving
and loading on a similar fashion we previously wanted. It has a folder
inside it's Activity directory with subdirectories related to each kind of
Scratch project. Also, Scratch's Activity directory has the same access
permission as any other sugar Activity installed.

So, my question is, does anyone knows how Scratch implements it's save /
loading method? is there any guide explaining how to do it without using the
journal? Keep in mind that we do know that there are other directories we
could use to save our files, but we would like to use our Activity directory
 if possible.

Sorru, not much help, but my understanding is that Scratch has recently
been updated to fix this long standing non-standard Sugar behaviour, and now
uses the Journal to store it's state. Removal of explicit Save/Save as
dialogues is a specific UI design goal in Sugar.

If you try some other non-standard route you may well break/loose things
like the various Journal backup and restore options, support in various
distro environments, as well as activity and OS upgrades.

Re: [Sugar-devel] Announce: OLPC software strategy.

2010-07-09 Thread Claudia Urrea
Great news!!! Happy Claudia!

 Hi Sascha,

I trust the license will allow me to: 1. Build a new (complete,
working) firmware image 2. Install it on my own XO-1.75.
    3. Distribute the image (+ source) to other XO-1.75 users so they
    can install it.

We expect this to be no problem, just as building your own OFW+EC
binary blob and redistributing them right now is no problem.  (The
encumbered PS/2 code we're talking about is already present in the
 XO-1 EC build.)

What about the compiler? IIUC currently a commercial compiler is
required. If that continues to be the case (as I expect it to),
would it be possible for OLPC to provide the (probably very few)
users interested in hacking on the EC code access to a machine
having this compiler installed? I.e. does the license OLPC has
for this compiler allow more than one user (on the same machine)
to use it (if necessary sequentially, ensured by using a lock
file) and would OLPC be willing to give users access to such a
    machine?

Good news here too:  we've moved to the free SDCC compiler, so there
should be no problem here.  I don't know full details, but there have
been some incompatibilities seen between SDCC and the EC code in the
past, so staying with SDCC is going to be conditional on being able
to find a way around those.  SDCC is the plan, though.

For more questions, I think we should move to the OLPC devel list,
and I'll let Richard Smith answer because this is his project.  :)
