Hi

I'm confused :) The www-sugarlabs repo hasn't been updated for 19 days?
How was the site changed?

Hi Dave

I'm not being negative, just surprised that the site was changed. My ideal
process is to involve marketers in marketing, but that's very unusual for
FLOSS projects :-)

In fact the homepage does cycle the logo variants - that's good!

There are typos in the text though... who can fix those?

I am relieved to see that the press page survived at its permalink.

I didn't realize the existing site had been scrapped already.

FWIW, the Sugar branding calls for randomly switching between the logo
color schemes [1] on reload. The old site (where ?) did this

2016-04-21 Thread Juan Carlos Murillo
Hi Dave,

Thank you for your answers.

I visited all the websites and I think they would look much better with a
consistent color scheme. I’m going to try your suggested scheme. Also, if there
is a range of different colors for the logo, then a good idea might be to use
the same logo color for the websites that have more related content between
them (i.e. homepage and activities).

Thanks for the prioritization of the websites, I will definitely take it into
consideration when working on the redesign.

Jekyll is pretty good, another good option is NodeJS-based static site
generator Hexo. Wouldn’t it might be more simple for the developers to use a
same CMS or static site generator for all SL websites?

Thank you for your answers, James! I will take them into consideration.

I agree, before redesigning each specific website I'll make sure to identify
correctly its target audience. I have checked the suggested websites and they
could also be good options to redesign.

Regarding the CMS, you are right, probably a Git-integrated static site
generator like Hexo (https://hexo.io/) or Jekyll (https://jekyllrb.com/) could
be much more convenient for this case.

A question not asked, for perhaps it is obvious, is who is the intended
audience for each web site.

You might ask systems@ for a list of virtual hosts.

Some may benefit from style changes, if consistency of style is critical;

No. Something with git integration would be helpful so that developers can
link Sugar source code changes with changes to web sites. Otherwise a change
might be made in only one place, leading to inconsistency.

agreed, but if we can use instantsearchJS with Mozilla add-ons then it
would be great.
https://community.algolia.com/instantsearch.js/documentation/#starrating
Also we can use readthedocs with custom sphinx theme for documentation
features in readthedocs:
1. provides github integration
2. Auto Updating
3. docs in multiple languages(.po files)
4. provides building multiple versions
5. pdf generation
6. full-text search across all of the pages search indexing

Hello
I have also applied for GSOC 2016. I had an exam so I couldn't reply to
the messages. I have some suggestions and doubts regarding the technologies
used. I may be wrong in that case please correct me.

Mozilla addons - I think a better alternative may be instantsearchJS
https://community.algolia.com/instantsearch.js/ . It is faster and the UX
is pretty good.
demo: https://community.algolia.com/instantsearch.js/examples/media/

planet - an option to use 2 themes (Day/Night) will be nice. It needs a
better background and frame box design.
reference: http://planet.gnome.org/

pootle- i like the translation site as it is now. some changes in color(to
match with the whole website) and an icon is needed

gitorious: this website uses gitorious https://git.sugarlabs.org/ but
gitlab acquired gitorious. so should we move to gitlab (community edition
is free) ?
here are the features: https://about.gitlab.com/features/#compare

MediaWiki: a custom bootstrap skin can be used which will match the
website. It is optional because many people are habituated with the old
one. link: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Skin:BootStrapSkin

main website: At the time of applying for GSOC I made a mockup which can be
seen here:
https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Summer_of_Code/2016/Redesign_and_recreate_sugarlabs_web_appearance
I have also listed the problems in the current web page and how it can be
solved please take a look.

Don't know. If I needed to know, I'd ask Gonzalo.

My guess is that the help-activity repository is cloned, or a clone
updated, then "make html" is run, then the generated output is exposed
to an httpd which is bound as a virtual host to a CNAME.

I tested your website in portrait on my phone. Many of the text columns looked
a little small. Please try to test with that too.

When I went to your site, it seemed to be lacking in content. Please don't add
dummy text now and do content later. Content is genuinely the most important.
No matter how nice your design is, no new visitor will be able to get what

The pictures and design are only as important as they are good at pushing our

A question not asked, for perhaps it is obvious, is who is the
intended audience for each web site.

You might ask systems@ for a list of virtual hosts.

Some may benefit from style changes, if consistency of style is
critical;

help.sugarlabs.org
socialhelp.sugarlabs.org
developer.sugarlabs.org

There is old information about Sugar on wiki.laptop.org. If you need
an account to remove or redirect on wiki.laptop.org, contact me.

I don't think it matters.

I don't think it matters.

> Do you prefer a particular CMS? WordPress? Drupal? Joomla?

No. Something with git integration would be helpful so that
developers can link Sugar source code changes with changes to web
sites. Otherwise a change might be made in only one place, leading to
inconsistency.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2016 Website Redesign

2016-04-18 Thread Juan Carlos Murillo
Hi developers,

I hope you are doing well.

I applied for the GSoC 2016 to work on the redesign of the Sugar Lab's
websites. I would like to have your opinions on the following questions.

In addition to Sugar Labs main webpage, Wiki, Planet, and the Translation
webpages, which other websites do you think will need to be redesigned?

Which Sugar Lab's logo color is going to be adopted: orange, green or blue?
What color schemes would you prefer to use on Sugar Lab's websites? The
current websites have a wide variety of color schemes; a same color scheme
on all websites may look nicer.

Do you prefer a particular CMS? WordPress? Drupal? Joomla?

Best regards,

Juan Carlos Murillo Torres

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSOC 2016 query regarding project : Redesign and recreate Sugar Labs webappearance

2016-03-10 Thread James Cameron
I agree with Sam; being able to try it out, and engaging new people,
are the critical goals.

The web site is http://sugarlabs.org/

The content should guide and inform people who have never heard of
Sugar or activities.

Other web sites have used HTML5 features and style sheets to make them
accessible on desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone browsers. Good idea,
but not if it makes the site less accessible to environments where
Sugar is used; environments with low bandwidth internet.

Sugarizer might be used for try it out. A prepared virtual machine
would be useful. But without easy tools for preparing bootable
drives, trying it out on a computer is difficult.

The site has links to activities-2.sugarlabs.org, which currently
return 502 Bad Gateway from nginx.

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSOC 2016 query regarding project : Redesign and recreate Sugar Labs webappearance

2016-03-10 Thread Sam Parkinson

Hello,

I didn't write the project idea, but I did argue with lots with people
about the website before.

Really I think that it is not about how the website looks, it is about
how the users experience the website. So right now, we have a website
with pictures right. But we don't have easy tools to create
sugar-on-a-stick liveusbs. We don't have any evil email stealing
things [1] that let's us put people through email series so that they
become engaged with Sugar a convert from a random teacher/student using
it to somebody involved in the community. Maybe making a better native
app to do the sugar-on-a-stick creation, and creating an email
mini-course that we introduce people to sugar with could be a great
project?

Thanks,
Sam

I think that the GCI student wrote the said proposal.txt file.

The proposal here is less important than the main goal.

The main goal is to program the GCI student's implementation so that it exports
the tempo the user experiences as a block in the main Music Blocks interface.

(have you tried the student's widget? It has bouncing balls and you can change
the rate that they bounce [tempo]. What is missing is some way to export that
tempo to music blocks code.)

I would recommend to start with rhythm rulers first.

User should start with:
1. a line (a whole note)
2. be able to dissect the line by a certain number (into x or y number
of parts to create half, quarter, sixteenth etc. notes).
3. be able to repeat the process.

(proportions should all have absolute visual fidelity [i.e. whole
is /exactly/ twice as long as half)

4. some method of audio playback (clicks or drums)
5. a way to export the result as music blocks code (rhythm blocks)

I imagine that you either want to start with:
a) implementing a simple UI of the rulers and dissection functionality
(click and prompt a number for division)
b) start with a back-end of audio playback and blocks export.

I hope this helps a little. The main design picture is the file
"rhythm-ruler-design.jpg"

Also, understand know next to *nothing* about coding... I am the music
guy!

[Sugar-devel] GSOC 2016

2016-03-07 Thread yoshita arora
Hi,

I have been working through Sugar labs for a while now, I made a pull
request (#209) for the issue (#210) and working on it. Meanwhile, could you
please advice on what next should I implement, solve any simpler bug or
some other enhancement related tasks that would help me contribute fast and
get more familiar with the code base within the next two to three days.

Also, I was looking at the ideas page for GSOC 2016 and caught my eye on
"Music Widgets" as I have knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Jquery and
Music Theory (passed the second grade keyboard exam). I want to start
contributing for the same as soon as possible.

I have had a look at all the links as suggested for the project, and there
are certain things I wanted to clear:

1) Do I have to implement what's given in the proposal.txt file in "final"
folder of "tempo"?

2) Also, could you please elaborate a bit more for where and what should I
start implementing for "Rhythm" and the "pitch stairs"? What could be some
possible bitsize tasks regarding these two that I could start implementing
and could get familiar with the code base as soon as possible?

Hoping for a positive response soon.

Best Regards,
Yoshita Arora

2016-03-01 Thread Rehas Sachdeva
Dear developers!

I am Rehas, studying at IIIT-Hyd, India, in 2nd year. I'm very interested
to work with Sugar and am interested in a number of ideas proposed this
time, particularly:

1) Unit Testing
2) Beyond Flashcards: Programming to ReadJS

I am proficient in Python, JavaScript, HTML, CSS.

Could you please guide me as to:

1) How I can get started and discuss some details of the above ideas.
2) What skills should I especially focus on if I'm interested in the above
ideas?
2) Additionally, pointing me to some small task I can get started with,
would be very helpful!

Thanks!

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2016 Projects

2016-02-19 Thread Utkarsh Tiwari
Hi,
I am Utkarsh Tiwari, a 3rd year student from JIIT, Noida (India).
I have been writing activities for Sugarlabs since February 2015 and
have submitted 7 activities till date.
Here is my developer profile ->
http://activities.sugarlabs.org/en-US/sugar/user/13555

I would like to work on Python projects this summer in GSoC 2016. I
have come across these two activities interesting on the idea page and
would like to get in flow with them.

1- Reflections
2- Sugar Journal

Could anyone here please share some details about what new features
are expected in them or whether both projects are manageable in 3
months time bracket?

regards,
Utkarsh Tiwari
