Re: [Sugar-devel] Jaunty up and running

2009-07-07 Thread James Michael DuPont
Hi guys
Yesterday I updated sugar and rebuilt after cleaning the install dir, the
sugar now runs without my hack.
Thanks Silbe. I dont know why it works, but it works. Hopefully, one day I
will understand this.
But for now, we will just believe in luck.

I am working on integrating the debian packaging stuff directly into the
sugar-jhbuild and will report back when I have sugar-base integration.

thanks,
mike

Installing ubuntu takes about 30 minutes. You can run it it on a virtual
 machine.

There was a team of people working on Sugar on Ubuntu, but they didn't
had the needed resources and stalled before the 9.04 release. I don't
know if getting something packaged for Ubuntu is very hard but Aleksey
has packaged Sugar 0.84 for several distros by himself:

Could you update that table with your opinion on the Ubuntu status?

Can you tell me of sugar working on any distro out of the box?
 are there any success stories?

By that table, all distros except Arch Linux and maybe Debian are
working, but maybe we need people to actually try them out and update
the Status column?

I really cannot find anything on ubuntu except wiki pages that are out of
 date.
Sorry, but this is very frustrating.

It's also frustrating for me that my work is not available in such a
popular distro as Ubuntu, but work won't get done until someone rolls
up her/his sleeves.

Tomeu

Looking forward to that as well.
For the record: we got it running by uninstalling the Ubuntu Sugar

removal of the install directory).
So it seems like it was indeed a distro package that confused

OK, cannot say anything about that as I've stopped using distro packages
quite some time ago. 0.82 never really worked for me and 0.84 wasn't
available as distro packages back then. AFAIK SoaS uses the distro
packages from Fedora 11 so those should be working fine, though.

Jhbuild, we will have to go through this together when I am online.
this latop cannot even begin to use jhbuild, it is an aspire one. 512

None of the hosts I'm running sugar-jhbuild on has more than 512MB of
RAM, whether physical (my non-XO Laptop) or simulated (for the virtual
machines I use for testing). The XO (running sugar-jhbuild on Debian
squeeze) even has only 256MB, a slow processor (AMD Geode) and is
running from a 16GB SDHC card (the card itself is quite fast, but the SD
interface in the XO is abysmally slow). The last rebuild that included
xulrunner (we now use the distro package instead) took a full night.

I am sorry to be so frustrated, but it is too much to ask normal users
to

use jhbuild.
Ideally normal users would use the distro packages. That these are
outdated and/or don't work is something that needs to be and AFAICT is
in the process of being fixed, e.g. Sugar 0.84 has now entered Debian
squeeze thanks to Jonas. OpenSuSE should have recent, working packages
as well (thanks to David van Assche).

I will be back in the office on Monday, then i can work on this more.
It is behavior that I have seen on all ubuntu 9.04 standard package
installs.

obviously this is just a hack to get thing working, I would love to have the
time to learn
more about the system to help debug it. as soon as I have more time, I will
look into it.
