Re: [freenet-support] Freenet crashes DSL modem

2004-05-01 Thread Galen
How interesting.

I am not the owner of the modem, and it is not causing problems for the
owners (except those that I've caused) so I don't think I can pursue
this issue myself. But I have plans to be bringing in a fast Qwest DSL
line myself and I'll will most definitely keep this in mind. Although
this looks like a bit of a problem for my freenet ambitions, Qwest has
competitive rates and an excellent TOS (unlike, *cough* Comcast... can
you say unspecified bandwidth cap? no NAT allowed?) in my area and I
think we can figure something out if I have this problem. DSL modems
aren't very expensive...

Thanks for the info. Sounds like anyone else using this Actiontec modem
should keep their eyes peeled for this problem.

Re: [freenet-support] Freenet crashes DSL modem

2004-05-01 Thread Eric Thacker
This isn't the first nat router to die like this. Apple's Airport
Basestation also has a similar issue. It happens to be that the nat
router can't keep up with the number of connections being made and
freezes.

One thing you might try is to turn off nat mode on your DSL modem and use
an external nat router.

I know of two nat routers that work well under the load of freenet:

Network Everywhere Cable/DSL router (It's in a nice metal box like a small
Cisco pix)

CompUSA branded FMI router (looks really ugly, but is nice as far as the
features it has. Can be found at CompUSA; it's the cheapest one there.)

I'm sure there are others that work well also.

Eric

 Hi,

I've got an interesting arrangement here. It appears that when I run
freenet, it crashes the DSL/NAT (combo device) actiontec DSL modem.
Yes, it totally freezes, no data in or out (no pings, dhcp, etc) until
 physically reset.

The arrangement is somewhat unusual, but I can reliably crash the
 modem. Every single time.

 Here's how the network layout:

Qwest DSL Modem Actiontec w/NAT connected to a Netgear wireless
router's LAN side, which creates a wireless network. Then, near the
boundary of reception, there's a D-Link access point in client mode
that's connected to the netgear wireless network. The ethernet cable
from the client mode AP connects to the WAN port on a d-link wireless
router. I then connect a variety of computers to the d-link's wireless
network. This provides two virtual network with the same internet
connection, but different encryption options, coverage areas, etc -
 exactly my goal.

Yes, this is very unusual (both the network and the behavior), and no,
I don't want to spend much time trying to fix the problem, but if it's
something that there's an easy fix to, I'm all for that, otherwise,
it's just another entry for the quirky things list.

Re: [freenet-support] Freenet crashes DSL modem

2004-05-01 Thread Toad
Usually this is caused by the hardware routers/etc not being able to
support enough connections. You could try decreasing maxNodeConnections
(the default is now 200, but if you have an old config file it might be
forced to 512; you could try 100).

[freenet-support] freenet can't find Java

2004-05-01 Thread Daniel Lewis

I downloaded and installed Java in /usr/java, but when I run freenet it says
starting freenet now: Done then nice: java: no such file or directory. I'm
running Fedora Core 1, and am somewhat new to Linux so I'm not sure how to fix
this problem. Thanks

It seems that the java bin directory isn't in your path, so the startup
scripts can't find it.

To fix this, go to /etc/profile.d and create a file called java.sh with
the following contents:

--clip--
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_03
export JAVA_PATH=$JAVA_HOME
export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
--clip--
Remember to substitute /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_03 with the actual directory
that you installed Java in.

After you've created the file and set it as executable (chmod +x
java.sh), logout and login. freenet startup scripts should work now.
