That's wouldn't be hard... But we better add code to detect and convert 
the old index file... You don't want freenet to loose all its data at 
the same date :-)

  just to have secure private email conversations.  Problem is getting
  everyone you know and transfer email with to run freenet nodes (and some
  of them may have hardware incapable of running a node effectively).

Problem with PGP is that the recipient also needs PGP to be able to read
the email from senders using PGP this is not typically the case in most
email cases.  For instance this list doesn't support PGP transport
(otherwise the subscription options would necessarily include an exchange
of public keys so that you could send/receive PGP encapsulated email to
the mailing list).
