[freenet-support] Running a node again

2006-04-24 Thread vinyl1
For a long time, I didn't run a node for lack of a suitable machine and
bandwidth. I recently picked up an old P4 1.8 Optiplex with 256M, which is had
intended to use for something else, but when that fell through I decided to
play around with Freenet on it.

I wanted to redo what I had done before to see if it still worked and review
Freenet basicst, so I installed a small partition of Win2K, downloaded Freenet
5106 and the latest Frost, and installed. The help files are still hit or
miss, and the Wiki is only for .7, so I just did a hack install and got the
thing going. Messages are appearing in Frost, so I'm going to give it the
24-hour breakin run and make sure it works properly before going on.

It does take all 256 meg of memory and uses 100% of the CPU, but since I spent
$117 to purchase a dedicated Freenet server, I don't care.

Here are my questions:

1. The default datastore is on the C; partition and is only 512 meg. How do I
move it to another partition and give it more room? Can I change that only, or
do I have to move everything?

2. If I can't retrieve a lot of content after 24 hours of Frost board
refreshing, is that me or is that because Freenet users are shutting down the
.5 nodes in favor of .7?

3. The new version of Frost works with .5 and .7, and you can move your board
files from .5 to .7. Does this mean the boards on .7 will have the same names
and work with the same keys?

I'm sure I'll have more questoins when I put up a partition of Linux and
attempt to get .7 running. That ought to be funI won't know if it's my
pitiful skillset as a Linux SA or the new software acting up.

In your freenet.ini make the following alterations:
storeFile=D:\Path/freenet/
storeSize=513M

Make sure that there are no '%' in the beginning of those lines. Then you need to more the
store directory to the path that you have provided, also copy the following files into it:

lsnodes_a
lsnodes_b
ngrt_global_a
ngrt_global_b
ratedata_a
ratedata_b
rtnodes_a
rtnodes_b
rtprops_a
rtprops_b
These files should be in the parent directory of the freenet so they would be in
D:\Path

2. If I can't retrieve a lot of content after 24 hours of Frost board
refreshing, is that me or is that because Freenet users are shutting down the
.5 nodes in favor of .7?

Most of the 0,5 will be there for a while... don't worry about 0,7... most large 0,5 users
will wait for a long time before terminating it... q;-)

3. The new version of Frost works with .5 and .7, and you can move your board
files from .5 to .7. Does this mean the boards on .7 will have the same names

No, 0,7 keys are very different from 0,5. Unkeyed boards will be moved most
probably.

I'm sure I'll have more questoins when I put up a partition of Linux and attempt to get .7 running. That ought to be funI won't know if it's my pitiful skillset as a Linux SA or the new software acting up.

Well, i got so boring when i tried to get mine working, that people here stopped
responding to me... so don't worry, i'll try to help... for karma if nothing else. q;-)
