Ever heard of a bug tracker ?

I would phrase it slightly differently, but the bug tracker does seem
like the best place to post some of these issues. There are still many
problems with the software, nobody denies that, so it is very
important to keep the information structured so the issues can be
resolved as efficiently as possible.

I know there is a ticket about the keyboard:
http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/1778

I have come across several discussions about wifi trouble and it seems
there are many people working on this, but I can't find an overarching
ticket. I'll create one in a minute.

I haven't looked at the other issues you mentioned.

Keyboard guid

2008-08-10 Thread Sjors Provoost
Hi there,

I am sure this has been announced before, but I am sure I am not the
only one who only stumbled into it by accident after hours of
experimentation and reading bug reports and heated debates. So I will
just increase its pagerank a bit.

There are two guides on how to use the new om2008.8 keyboard!

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Om2008.8_Keyboard
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Om_2008.8_Guide

* how to switch between layouts (small, caps, numeric, special characters)
* how to do backspace
* how to turn it on and off

Even though one of the guides is linked directly from
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Om2008.8, I think it needs a more
prominent spot and a better catch phrase*. For some reason I did read
the installation instructions, but did not even notice this important
link. I think I am not the only one. So that means I am probably
stupid, but so are most people; this will be a fun challenge for the
usability team.

* : e.g. right after install in the Download subsection (I would
also switch these titles by the way; Install is the real main
message here and you'll need to download before you can do that)
have a Get started subsection. That should have a text like: You'll
probably want to learn about the new keyboard..

Alright, that typo in the subject completely ruined the pagerank :-)

Can I convince someone to trial it? :-)

Of course!

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp# opkg install ruby19-complete_190-3_armv4tl.ipk
Collected errors:

I have a Freerunner with the om2008.8 stack on it. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, does this version include gem?

 Can you try this:

 ?

Installed!

And it runs my test.rb script:
1 + 1
2

Gem doesn't work yet though. Probably because the first line of /bin/gem:
#!/home/root/workspace/ruby19/bin/ruby

Should probably be:
#!/bin/ruby

But when I change that, I get:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/volatile/tmp# gem install irb
/bin/gem:9:in `require': no such file to load -- rubygems/gem_runner (LoadError)
from /bin/gem:9:in `main'

So now all we need is Firefox 3 (full screen and with the menus
elsewhere, we'll worry about speed later) and viM and git.

Re: Ruby 1.9 ported!!

2008-08-10 Thread Sjors Provoost
I just managed to build ruby 1.8.6 with Mokomakefile with the latest patch
 level and fixed the
socket problem in ruby, I installed gem and it worked, and irb seems to work
 fine.

I'll put the ipk up somewhere [...]

Sounds great. Can't wait!

I don't see an easy way to include gem with this ipk as it is built on a
host, but it is easy enough
to install gem from source on the actual FR itself.

Can you write a quick cookbook recipe on the wiki?

Mofi crash on om2008.8

2008-08-09 Thread Sjors Provoost
Hi there,

I am trying to use Mofi [0] to access my wireless network. I've tried
both the stable 0.2 and preview 0.3 version, installed from the ipk
file.

When I click on the Wifi Mofi icon, after a few seconds I get a really
fancy looking but not very useful error message:
Wifi Mofi has quit running unexpectedly. There was no error message.
This error log will be saved as /home/root/Wifi Mofi.log

Unfortunately this file does not exist, so I can't attach it.

If I go to Settings - Wifi then I see a list of wireless networks,
including my (open) home network. If I click on my home network, it
blinks green, but nothing happens.

I have a Freerunner with the new om2008.8 on it.

Kind regards,

Sjors
