 By the way--

I just tested VS2005 (no service pack) on my Dell Dimension 4700 w/3ghz
running WinXP Pro SP2, and pfsense boots right up.

 So, I think it's 1 of 3 things:
 1. The E64MT support in the Xeon Processor we have

No, as I'm using regular old dual P3 1.26 GHz procs and get the same.

 2. The fact that we are running Win2k3 x64 on the host (this is the test
 machine)

Again, no, since I'm seeing the same.

 3. VS2005 SP1 is beta and still needs work :)

After eliminating the above, this has to be it! :)

 The production machine is running Win2k3 SP0 (not x64) with VS2005 SP0,
but it does have the same processors as the test machine. So, I will
probably try it later today on the production machine to see if it
boots. If so, that eliminates #1 as a problem (which is unlikely to be
the problem imo, but it is a variable here).

Thanks for looking into this closer! Definitely interested to hear
the results of your test, but given the above I'd almost bet it'll
work with anything that doesn't have VS SP1.

that actually surprises me... I haven't tried running FreeBSD with
the VS SP1 beta yet, but the RTM version had some horrible hardware
bugs that made it basically unusable with FreeBSD. The time would
advance almost an hour for every minute, it wasn't very stable, and I
could go on...

Just FYI, I am running Windows Server 2003 x64 SP1 as my base OS along with
Virtual Server 2005 SP1 Beta on a dual 2.8ghz xeon with e64mt and 2gb ram
and HT enabled-- all of our current VMs run fine (including the monowall) on
this machine, so I would tend to doubt that it has to do with the VS2005SP1
beta, but I won't exclude the possibility if you guys think it has something
 to do with it.

Well, I was attempting to try my test VS SP1 server, on Server 2003
SP1 on a dual P3 1.26 with 4 GB RAM, but it's being contrary at the
moment (as has VS during all of my testing, ugh, what a steaming pile
of crap compared to VMware GSX... performance wise and GUI wise)

Off to fix my VS box, if I get it working I'll try out pfsense. My
probably completely impractical and useless
because-I'm-bitter-at-MS-now-that-my-VS-is-b0rk answer - use VMware.

RE: [pfSense Support] FW: pfSense-LiveCD-0.73.8.iso problems

2005-08-08 Thread Dimitri Rodis
Believe me, I do like GSX better, but since we are an MS house, we
actually own copies of the stuff, and our entire operation (hosting as
well as internal production machines, 10 total) all runs on VS2005. I am
aware of the issue with the clock, as I am hosting a Linux VM for a
buddy, and his solution was to simply sync the clock with an NTP server
every 5 min :). I am doing the same thing on my monowall every 6
minutes. If you have the VS Tools installed in your VM, then the clock
isn't a problem, but of course, there are no Virtual Server tools for
BSD-- (supposedly there will be tools for Linux, but I'll believe it
when I see it).

Any suggestions other than run GSX? lol

The machine that I am referring to in my email below is our current VM
testing environment. I could probably arrange terminal services and VRMC
access to the host machine if you think that might help you. If so, let
me know and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the quick response.
