No, Pidgin isn't the updated Mxit version - Pidgin is a multiprotocol

You'll need to install the Mxit plugin (from here:

There is no way to do this automatically within Pidgin.

A plugin could do this, but it isn't particularly likely that you'll
get large log files with the way that logging works (you get a new
file for each conversation). In several years of logging, I don't
have any files that are larger than 4 megabytes.

Patches are applied to the source code - you need to set up a build
environment (http://d.pidgin.im/wiki/BuildingWinPidgin), then once you
get that working you can use the `patch` command to apply the patch
and then recompile pidgin.

It is possible to avoid a couple steps, but the effort to do so

I don't think the current process is at all painful (and it isn't

I might consider a patch if one were supplied, but otherwise I'm not

What about between 2 pidgin clients? This is the case here. (Just
managed to get a friend off msn messenger onto pidgin).

This would work if you were connected directly to the internet, had
external inbound ports mapped to your machine or had a working file
transfer proxy specified (this needs to be done manually because the
google servers don't provide one). The previous default manual file
transfer proxy (proxy.jabber.org) doesn't work, you can try
proxy.eu.jabber.org.

In 2.6.0, when in-band transfers work, this scenario should work out
of the box (granted it will be slow because the transfer will go
through the servers).

I have set up my router to forward port 8010 to my laptop and set up

I take it that irc file transfers will be direct. Are there any other
protocols that pidgin can do direct transfers with, rather that going
through a server?

Thanks for your help so far by the way. Appreciated.

Most of these platforms require porting of additional libraries first
before Pidgin or its components can run. We have no plans to bring
Pidgin to any of these platforms at this time.

Based on information we have, Palm WebOS (used in the Palm Pre) includes
libpurple, however, and uses it for its built-in IM services.

Setting the character encoding on an AIM account

2009-07-09 Thread willywag

I'm using an AOL Instant Messenger account with Pidgin. Occasionally I'll get
a message from someone that gets replaced with the error message:

(There was an error receiving this message.  Either you and {screen name}
have different encodings selected, or {screen name} has a buggy client.)

This happens when people copy and paste things from Microsoft Word with
smart quotes in them, and so on. Now, the people who send me these messages
generally have no idea what a character encoding is, or even what a client
is, buggy or otherwise. I'd be happy to change my character encoding to suit
them, and I can probably guess which encoding they're using (based on their
operating system, etc.) but I can't find an option to do that anywhere in
Pidgin's interface. I also don't know the details of the AIM protocol to
know which encodings it can or does use.

I feel like I must be missing something blindingly obvious here. Can anyone
help me out?

Thanks in advance.

Compilation Mishap

2009-07-09 Thread Benjamin Badgley

Having a compilation mishap. intltool scripts, which make says it needs won't
use write access to the /usr/doc directory under Debian Lenny. Hopefully,
./configure, make, make install is the correct route to compile and install the
new pidgin.
