Re: Pidgin on iphone

Hi there,

There's a few plugins on the
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ThirdPartyPlugins wiki page that let you
send messages from a phone via Pidgin, eg WebPidginZ, pidgin-juice and
sapphire

Cheers,
Eion

Apple's policies mean that many open source software developers will not
develop for it, and that includes the Pidgin developers.

Also Pidgin is designed to run with a GUI library that is really
intended for bigger machines.

You may be able to use other software to access your IM services on
iPhone, but without knowing which service or protocol is used, it would
be difficult to make suggestions.

Pidgin is a client, so it logs in to things. You cannot log in to it.

You appear to be an Oracle user, but Oracle do not publish details of
their internal servers. We suspect it is XMPP based and there are XMPP
clients for iPhone. Pidgin will not be ported to Apple ecosystem
products because the developers consider that Apple Store policies are
incompatible with open source licences.

Standard response for Oracle users:

We are advised that people within the Oracle network can use
<http://my.oracle.com/site/git/1591/index.htm> for more information; for
outsiders, like us, it just redirects to the public home page.

Please explain to whoever should be supporting you why you went to the
wrong place, and suggest how they could fix that in future.

As far as I know, Pidgin doesn't work with any phone, as phones don't support
the GTK+ user interface library. I suspect you are, as seems common in Oracle,
confusing Pidgin with Oracle's internal IM service, and you were actually using
an application other than Pidgin to access that service.

You probably need to look for an XMPP client for iOS 11.

You seem to be misinformed. Android may use a somewhat modified version of the
Linux kernel (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel ) but its runtime
and semantics are not compatible with the “GNU/Linux” (or so called
simply “Linux”) operating system - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux ;
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_%28operating_system%29 . Namely, I was
told that care was taken to avoid using any code copyrighted by the Free
Software Foundation there.

For some of the problems that people have run into with porting software that
runs fine on Linux and other UNIX-like operating systems into Android, see:

http://blogs.perl.org/users/sawyer_x/2010/10/leaving-android.html

Pidgin cannot have clients, because it is purely a client. I wonder if
you are confusing Pidgin with the services it accesses (as is common
amongst Oracle employees).

An SMS for Pidgin exists for Android‎ that I can install on my BlackBerry10 and

For OS X use the Mac Pidgin build or Adium (uses libpurple too)

No, it is not possible currently to use Pidgin on any (currently popular) phone.
Unless Apple changes their developer agreement, neither Pidgin, finch, nor
libpruple can ever be distributed for Apple devices. See
