I don't see offhand a deb package anywhere, but I presume you could build this
https://github.com/dequis/purple-facebook and put the .so file to
`~/.purple/plugins/` dir. This shouldn't be too hard: just install the dev
packages, and do a `./autogen.sh && ./configure && make -j$(nproc)`

As a side note, it seems the plugin will be included to the next major Pidgin
version. I wonder when it's going to be released…

Hi Yaisel,

This is not a development question but you have posted to the development
mailing list. In future use the support mailing list for support questions.

In this case, you'll need to update the third party plugin through its

Re: Facebook connection error- Null Value

2017-03-29 Thread Wade Smart
So I notice that the package is maintained by someone else.
When I try to update it says:

Reading package lists... Done
W: The repository
'http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/jgeboski/xUbuntu_15.10
./ Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Data from such a repository can't be authenticated and is therefore
potentially dangerous to use.

I tried changing jgeboski to dequis but that didnt work either.

If dequis has taken over but the files are under jgeboski but those
files now are incomplete???
how does one install the update?

Dropping support doesn't necessarily mean turning of the servers.

If you still want to use Facebook with Pidgin, try the new Facebook

RE: Facebook not working on pidgin

2015-07-11 Thread Nicolai Knaggs
Michael,

After working through the instructions below for windows I still get a message
saying that the user name or password is incorrect. I tried the following:

-Restart Pidgin
-Restart Computer
I tried the following for user names:

- usern...@chat.facebook.com\pidgin
- usern...@chat.facebook.com/pidgin
- usern...@chat.facebook.com
- Username/pidgin
- Username\pidgin
- Username
- Email

and I still get the user name is incorrect message. Did I miss something?

I followed the following from you link.

Basic usage

Install the plugin (see the corresponding section below)
Restart pidgin

Add a new account or modify your existing one with the following details:
Protocol: Facebook (NOT Facebook (XMPP))
Username: Either your email, facebook username or phone will work. If
you had usern...@chat.facebook.com, remove the @chat.facebook.com part.

Installing on windows

Download: libjson-glib-1.0.dll
Copy the downloaded libjson-glib-1.0.dll to C:\Program Files\Pidgin
Download the latest libfacebook.dll from the releases
Copy the downloaded libfacebook.dll to C:\Program Files\Pidgin\plugins

Note: Program Files will be Program Files (x86) on 64-bit Windows.

Thanks,

Facebook dropped XMPP support (which Pidgin uses) a while ago and seems
to have finally shut it off in the past day or two. They only use a
custom closed protocol now.

James Geboski is adding support for it as a Google Summer of Code

Strange thing is, that in Facebook Security Settings Where

So it appears, that XMPP itself works.

I didn't see anything on the developer's chat page about a replacement for
xmpp. I suspect someone will try to reverse engineer messenger's protocol,
and I hope they succeed. But even if they get something workable, it still
won't be as good as an api provided by and openly documented by Facebook.

If you get an unexplained certificate error you should assume that you
are under a man in the middle attack, until you have convinced yourself
otherwise.

Your first highlighted line indicates that the certificate Facebook
presented is not one you have seen previously from them. The second
highlighted line indicates that you do not have the root certificate
installed for the alleged signer of the that certificate.

You need to obtain that certificate by secure means, convince yourself
that they are reliable and appropriate people to authenticate Facebook
servers, and install it.

Some information on how to install a root certificate that you trust, on
Windows Pidgin, can be found at
https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/MSNCertIssue.

You should not rely on mailing lists like this to tell you whether you
can trust any particular certificate as posters here are not

Hi Cassandra. Pidgin only sends auto replies on IM protocols that have
historically featured auto replies (and the auto-reply preference
only pertains to those IM protocols). Specifically, only AIM and
Zephyr. This is because there's no way to indicate that a message is
an auto-reply on other IM protocols, and they tend to confuse people.

I think the purple plugin pack might include a plugin that adds auto
reply functionality for other protocols. More info at

I'd be cautious about doing this on Facebook anyway, as this will make
Facebook think you are active, which adjusts how you appear via the web
interface, but it also prevents notifications from being sent to other
devices.

So for example, if you were using Facebook IM on another PC or mobile
device, that device would stop showing notifications every time your
pidgin autoresponds.

Facebook really isn't built for away messages.

Ditto, though for me the problem only began yesterday, 23 Apr. I've noticed

Also, a few random Facebook friends do appear in Pidgin and Digsby from time
to time, but the usually disappear after a short while.

Re: Facebook Buddies Not Appearing

2013-04-24 Thread Mark Doliner
Hi everyone.

This probably isn't something that Pidgin can control. Pidgin simply
displays the buddies that it is told to display. In this case it
sounds like the Facebook XMPP server is failing to send to Pidgin
either your roster or perhaps presence information for your roster.
There probably isn't anything we can do about it.

I'll add that I think some people experienced a similar problem
another time within the past week or so, and I believe things started
working again after a few hours.

Assuming you're using XMPP to connect to Facebook, Pidgin doesn't
control which contacts appear online/offline. This information is
given to Pidgin by Facebook, so you would need to bring this up with
Facebook.

and is it possible to load the past conversation if i write a facebook user
 in pidgin?

You can kind of get this functionality by enabling conversation
logging and loading the History plugin. It will only show
conversations that have taken place in Pidgin, though. I don't think
we interact with Facebook's unified message system in any way. We
certainly don't do anything Facebook specific. I suppose it's
possible there is an XMPP XEP that covers this functionality, but if
so, I don't think Pidgin nor Facebook's XMPP servers support it.

Hi,

Have a look at https://www.facebook.com/sitetour/chat.php, then pidgin
section, you will get the exact informations that you need to fill in the
account in pidgin, in particular your facebook user name if you don't know
it.

If this still does not work, you need to provide more informations on what
error messages you get and your environment (pidgin version, internet
connection etc..)

I've encountered this as well. I believe it's happening because of
Facebook's new lists feature, which allows people to group their
friends in lists. (Though the actual change is fairly recent.) In the
chat configuration tool, you tell Facebook Chat to only make you
available via chat to everyone, only those in a certain list, or
everyone _except_ those in a certain list. If you choose the first or
third options, then the contacts that show up in your XMPP client (as
was said, this is not Pidgin-specific) will have the group name
Facebook Friends and unfortunately there's nothing you can do about that.

However, I think that if you choose the second method, the group name
may have the same name as the list you've chosen. This requires you to
then have a list with the same name as the group you want in XMPP, and
also (and this is the problem) manually maintain the list of people you
want to chat with in a list. So it's probably not worth it.

In short, without manual intervention each time you add a new friend,
there's nothing you can do about the group name.

Whatever happened is new behaviour for Facebook; I've used Facebook's
lists feature since I started on Facebook a couple years ago and until
recently contacts always showed up in groups. It stopped while I was
travelling, I haven't touched any privacy settings since then, and I've
always been unavailable to Facebook chat with a certain group of people
who don't use it responsibly right from when I first started using it.

I can't imagine why Facebook would have made this change, although it
might be due to the fact that they're automatically creating lists and
users might have whined that it creates duplicates, but this is a
total shot in the dark.

Either way, there's nothing pidgin can currently do about it. A possible
implementation to handle this better might allow for locally overriding
of groups, similar to how you can locally alias a user. However, I can't
say that I'd use it myself, I'd rather have a consistent crappy
interface when roaming between machines and clients than an inconsistent
hack around the underlying problem.

Yes, the forced group name is a new change (I saw it last week or so),
just switched on recently (what was it, last week?). Facebook's online
documentation for connecting Facebook Chat with XMPP clients (not
Pidgin-specific ones) have screenshots that don't show the forced
Facebook Friends group name, so even their help pages haven't updated.

I don't know _why_ they did it either, but if it was a deliberate
choice, I would guess something along the lines of what you suggest.

Like you said, unfortunately, nothing Pidgin can do about it.
