Try this:

1) Write down the following before step 2. :)
2) Close SM.
3) Open the mimeTypes.rdf file in your profile folder with a text editor.
4) After the first three lines that read:
***
?xml ...
RDF:RDF xmlns...
 xmlns...
***
add these:
***
  RDF:Description RDF:about=urn:mimetype:application/do
   NC:description=WHATEVER-YOU-LIKE
   NC:fileExtensions=do
   NC:value=application/do
   NC:editable=true
NC:handlerProp RDF:resource=urn:mimetype:handler:application/do/
  /RDF:Description
  RDF:Description RDF:about=urn:mimetype:handler:application/do
   NC:alwaysAsk=true
  /RDF:Description
***
5) Save the file. Close the editor.
6) Start SM, try to open a .do file, choose your app.

Java no longer working in SM 2.14.1

2013-01-16 Thread flyguy

This is on a XP sp 3 machine.

Yesterday, I updated to the newest Java. It ran properly, asking me if I
wanted to run applications each time. Later in day, I got need a plugin
to run this messages, and discovered Java had magically disappeared
from my machine according to the Add-on Manager. It was still in my
programs folder, however. I quit for the day.

Today, I reinstalled it; it shows in the Add-ons manager as Java
Deployment Toolkit 7.0.110.21; it's enabled, but Java applications
still say need a plugin to run this.

I removed Java, reinstalled, but nothing has changed. IE 8 uses Java
without problems.

Same problem here. It's there in Add/Remove Programs and Program Files,
but not in About Plug-ins or Add-on Manager/Plug-ins. Applications (e.g.
time.gov) say I need a plug-in. It all worked before today's update.

2013-01-16 Thread Philip TAYLOR
Isn't this to do with JavaFX ? I removed my Java completely
yesterday after being warned by UAC that clicking on an e-mail
link in a PDF would cause Oracle's ssvagent to run. Checking
further, I found that :

ssvagent is run when java detects registry is not correct and then ssvagent
 tries to recover it.

The last think I want is Java message with my registry when I try
to send an e-mail.

 Uninstall JavaFX

If the Java (TM) Platform plugin is no longer detected in your Mozilla
browser after updating to the latest Java 7 JRE (Java Runtime Environment),
this can be caused by an outdated JavaFX installation, which prevents the
Java plugin from being properly registered. This issue has been reported
after updating to Java 7 Update 10. To resolve, uninstall JavaFX from the
Windows Control Panel list of installed programs, as suggested in this
java.com help page. Note: JavaFX used to be bundled as a standalone program
that was automatically installed with earlier versions of the Java 7 JRE but
is now included as part of the JRE. [40] [41] [42] [43] [44]

Philip has the clue - it's JavaFx that's the issue. I found the problem
resolution on the Java site:

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/firefox_java.xml

Following the instructions to remove javafx and java, running the MS
uninstall utility, then running the installer file (same one that failed
earlier) did the trick.

How do I get SM to use Java?

For both Java 7u10 and Java 7u11, I had a great difficulty getting a
good installation. After uninstalling the prior version, I had to
search my hard drive for any remnants of Java and JRE that were not
removed, being careful not to touch JavaScript. Then I had to edit my
Windows registry to remove all keys and values for Java and JRE, again
being careful not to touch either JavaScript or things like objres.
Only then was I able to get a good installation.

It's damned annoying that, having cleaned everything for installing Java
7u10, I then had to do it again for Java 7u11. I would not bother even
having Java, but I need it for a Web-design tool that I occasionally
use. I also enjoy a Web game that uses it.

I reported this problem to Oracle a year ago relative to Java 7u10.
Yesterday, I updated that report for Java 7u11.

Oops! While my description of my problems installing Java are correct,
my last sentence is wrong. My first (and only) report was yesterday. I
don't even think Java 7u10 existed a year ago.
