Ray, the bug shows it happening to three different people in the past
three months or so. Next time it happens, can you try to get an

Re: Seamonkey 2.31 crashes

2014-12-23 Thread NFN Smith

bobhur...@hurterconsult.com wrote:

Have not tried Safe Mode. Are you saying to install 2.31 then try
opening Seamonkey in Safe Mode? If this does work, then how do you
know if an extension is the problem? Can a plug-in also cause
problems?

See my comments earlier in this thread.

The first thing you get with a try of safe mode is Seamonkey running
with default settings with prefs, and all extensions disabled. If
things behave, then it's a pretty reliable indicator that something
non-default is the source of the problem.

In my particular case, running in safe mode caused the crash problem to
go away. I reenabled extensions one at a time, and the problem didn't
come back. When I finally did a standard startup, with all my extensions
active, and my preferences in place, still no problem.

I have no idea what changed, but *something* was amiss in the user
profile, that safe mode managed to correct.

The thing is that safe mode is something that is quick and simple to do,
and if trying it solves problems, then it gives you a much better idea
of where to start looking for the source.

Between the Seamonkey, Firefox and Thunderbird support groups, I see it
happen far too often where somebody has some sort of a problem (often
following a new version release), where they spend a lot of time butting
heads with the problem (including working through about:config settings,
or downgrade to a previous version with the claim that the most current
version broke their setups, and subsequent refusal to upgrade). It may
be that either of those is an appropriate approach, but in my
experience, both are are rare. And even if they are appropriate, taking
5 minutes to make a check of how things behave in safe mode is a
remarkably small investment of time and effort.

Safe mode isn't a panacea, but by my experience, when it comes to
problems in Mozilla apps, problems are most often related to _something_
in the user profile, and safe mode is the fastest way of addressing.
For what it's worth, you could get the same effect by using the profile
manager, and creating a fresh user profile.

VS2013, which we don't have installed and can't install because the

Eureka! I found it! There were FOUR files all prefixed by

copy in the places.sqlite from my Windows system to my Linux system,
it works! I only have to copy that one file.

Again, this wasn't necessary until 2.29 came along, so I wonder what
 changed??

Do not understand. I don't care how many files contain places.sqlite in
their filenames, copying the specific fiel places.sqlite should do the
 trick.

Just to make things clear, I ALWAYS shut down Seamonkey BEFORE I copy
places.sqlite from the source system, and I ALWAYS shut down Seamonkey
on the target system BEFORE I move over the copy. It didn't matter. I
think the SHM and WAL files had to be in sync with the base file, or
it ended up creating a CORRUPTED file and I had no bookmarks at all.

Deleting ALL of the places.sqlite* files from the target directory
before copying in the new places.sqlite does the trick. When I restart
Seamonkey it has all of the bookmarks and history, and it recreates the
 SHM and WAL files.

This was true for my copy of Firefox running under VirtualBox on my
machine as well. Had to do the same there, too. Never had to do this
before Seamonkey 2.29 so SOMETHING changed.

You should file a bug report; the temp files places.sqlite.shm and
places.sqlite.wal should be closed and removed when SeaMonkey shuts
down. So you've most likely found a bug. See:

https://www.sqlite.org/tempfiles.html

2.2 Write-Ahead Log (WAL) Files
...
The WAL file is created when the first connection to the database is
opened and is normally removed when the last connection to the database
closes. However, if the last connection does not shutdown cleanly, the
WAL file will remain in the filesystem and will be automatically cleaned
up the next time the database is opened.

2.3 Shared-Memory Files
...
The shared-memory file has the same lifetime as its associated WAL
file. The shared-memory file is created when the WAL file is created and
is deleted when the WAL file is deleted. During WAL file recovery, the
shared memory file is recreated from scratch based on the contents of
the WAL file being recovered.

You can click the far left edge of the collapsed Tool Bar to open it

on collapse, *NO* idea why - or you'll end up with both of them closed
and then you'll have to fiddle around to get them both back open...that
happens to me all the time too.
