Weird mouse click results

2017-01-10 Thread Paul B. Gallagher
Since I upgraded to 2.46, I've been experiencing weird mouse behavior in
SeaMonkey, but not in my other programs. Anyone else seeing this?

I normally have Mail/News open in three panes: the account/folder list
on the left, the message list at top right, and the preview pane at
bottom right. When a message is selected in the message list, it
displays in the preview pane. I only rarely "open" messages in a
separate window.

Weird results, different from what I'm used to:

1) If I single-click a message to select it in the list, it will often
open in a new window. This new window often replaces the Mail/News
window, so when I thoughtlessly close the message, the whole program
terminates.

2) If I single-click a folder in the account/folder list, a second
instance of Mail/News opens to that folder.

In both cases, SM is acting as if I've double-clicked, but I haven't.
Honest.

A WHOIS lookup indicates that onmicrosoft.com is owned by Microsoft. Of
course, it is entirely possible that a professional spammer is simply
using that domain name in his spew.

What is the nature of these emails that you are classifying as spam?

as other have said, never unsubscribe from something you never
subscribed to in the first place. Also don't allow images to open
automatically in your e'mail.

This is a fresh install of Seamonkey on my elderly laptop, so I'll be
doing the spam filtering from zero once again.

oh, BTW, cox.net's home internet support is useless...

How large is "large"? My places.sqlite is 20MB, and webappsstore.sqlite
is 96KB.

I think webappsstore is used for "Offline Storage", which I've disabled
at Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Offline Apps and is probably why that
one's so small for me. I guess it might be worth trying to clear offline
storage data for websites which you don't need it (at the same
preferences page) and then setting it to only allow specific sites.

Also, I have DOM inspector and Javascript debugger both disabled, and
never use them.

Could (should)I delete any of these files? Would doing so create any
problems for me? Other thoughts about the slow response?

I don't expect removing the DOM Inspector and Javascript Debugger
extensions would make much difference, particularly as they're disabled.
The Javascript Debugger which used to be included in a default
installation of SeaMonkey isn't compatible with recent versions of
SeaMonkey (2.29 on I believe), so you may as well remove it. DOM
Inspector is still usually [1] included; you should be able to remove it
if you don't use or want it, but I doubt doing so will help much with
general responsiveness since it's already disabled.

[1] Not in 2.46 due to build issues, although it can be installed
separately and you've probably already got it from a previous version of
SeaMonkey.

If it gets saved in HTML you should be really composing it in
HTML. Have never seen such behavior of composing in plain text, and
then message being saved as HTML draft, using any version of
SeaMonkey. Does any of this change if you press and hold Shift while
pressing the "Compose" button? (this alternates the preferred
composition format)

OK, I tried shift compose and it is indeed wrapping as I type. What I
was doing before was pressing compose, and then selecting option -
format - plain text. I thought that amounted to the same thing. The
formatting toolbar disappears. But apparently it is not the same thing.

I initially assumed so too and was about to raise this as a bug. But a
quick search first turned up bug #21128
 where someone noted
this behaviour of Options > Format > Plain Text back in 1999. It appears
it is intentional - the menu just sets the format to use for sending,
without changing the editor format.

It sounds like your default compose format (at least for the account in
question) is HTML. If that's what you usually want, you can use
Shift+Compose on occasions when you want to compose in plain text.

Alternatively, if you usually want to compose in plain text, you can go
to Edit > Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings > (Select account in the
left-hand list) > Composition & Addressing, and un-tick "Compose
messages in HTML format. That will make plain text the default (when you
just click "Compose"), and if you occasionally want to compose in HTML
you can use Shift+Compose to do that (as Stanimir mentioned, it gives
the opposite of your default).

I have never seen an 'add on' before that had to be constantly re-enabled. Is

It wasn't working that way for me on 2.40. So something's wrong.

Re: How do I stop Junk Mail (Spam) ?

2017-01-10 Thread Felix Miata

NFN Smith composed on 2017-01-10 09:28 (UTC-0700):

There's more than one way of designating a message as Junk or Not Junk,
when viewing the folder list pane:

- Use lower case "j" to mark as junk, capital "J" to mark as not junk
- Right click on the message, go to "Mark", then select either "junk" or
"not junk"
- If your folder summary is set to show message junk status, click on
that column -- a junk message will show a flame icon.

Or use customize toolbar to include a junk button. Mine is placed between
forward and stop, with two flexible spaces on each side of it to minimize
likelihood of an accidental click on it.

As noted separately, it's not a good idea to unsubscribe from something
that you didn't subscribe to. The spammer likely harvested your address
somehow, and once they have it, there's no way of getting them to
discard it.

For this kind of spam, it's difficult to build filters to discard --
spammers routinely vary both From: and Subject: lines to try to foil
filters, and unless you have a spammer that's uncommonly stupid, you'll
spend far more time trying to construct and maintain rules than you will
in actually discarding the stuff.

Your better bet is using the spam filters provided in Seamonkey. Those
are what are called "Bayesian" filters -- if you mark something as Junk,
then every message that is similar (and that's not just From: or
Subject: but the full collection of headers, body, and attachments) will
also be considered to be Junk. To be really effective, a Bayesian filter
needs to be given at least 100 samples of both spam and ham, and the
Bayesian filters done by Mozilla don't really allow for an "unknown"
condition. However, after you see three or four of these, and mark as
Junk, subsequent messages are likely to be automatically marked as Junk.

I believe that the default handling for junk mail is that if the filter
finds something that is evaluated as junk, or that you specifically mark
something as junk, then the message is immediately moved to the
account's Junk folder. That's how I have mine set, but there's a number
personal preferences that you can get to, by going to the account
settings, and checking options in Junk Settings.

When you're playing with this, you need to pay attention to your Junk
folder (to make sure that you're not getting legitimate messages thrown
in). If you get a legit message that turns up in the Junk folder, then
you need to make sure you mark that as Not Junk. Doing so will move the
message back to your inbox, as well as train the filter better
differentiate between junk and non-junk.
