Why not create alt.seamonkey.support and alt.seamonkey.develop?
Alternatively, ask at news.groups.proposals on any general NNTP server
to create comp.seamonkey.support and comp.seamonkey.develop, which could
then be moderated (but not by Chris Ilias).

SeaMonkey 2.53.7 released!

2021-03-30 Thread Edmund Wong
Greetings,

The SeaMonkey Project is pleased to announce the release of SeaMonkey
2.53.7.

This isn't going to be a quick canned notification as there is
significance in this post.

What's so significant?

This could be my last "New release" post here on the newsgroups
(well, unless we release something between now and prior to
newsgroup shutdown).

I can't seem to shake the feeling of the fond memories of
posting here about the new Releases. First it was KaiRo,
then Callek. Then me.

A new era will be upon us when we finally find a new
place to post this (well, aside for on the blog). Hey,
how about I gather everyone's email addresses and spam^H^H^H^H,
post new release updates that way? :D [You can put down
those pitchforks... I was just joking... really]

Jokes aside, it's been a blast posting here and I'm certainly
unhappy that it's going the same way as irc.mozilla.org. But
perhaps the new 'thing' will be better?

Anyway, the end of an era.

[Unless Mozilla changes its mind and say to us "Just kidding,
the newsgroups are here to stay!"]

And as RattyAway [Where are you?] once said.. "Hope springs
eternal.." [ok.. he might not have said that... but let's
roll with that. It's not like he's going to post on here
and rebut thhat ]

I'd like to thank Mozilla for having this medium to allow
us to all talk about SeaMonkey.

"So smoke me a kipper and I'll be back for breakfast!"

Or was it

"Thanks for all the fishes!"

So please check out [1] or [2].

Thanks to all involved.

Edmund

I seem to recall Lightning/Calendar being integrated into SeaMonkey

After the trojan IcedID copy only mail/newsgrou p-parts

2021-03-30 Thread Ray_Net

Hello,
I was so stupid, that I let install the IcedID trojan on my pc.
MalwareBytes removed it (may be not completely.
My anti-virus told me that some site had installed an extension into
google-chrome and let me remove it.
So I plant to backup bookmarks by export/import in html and to copy the
current profile.

Next step add/remove seamonkey program. followed with deleting
the C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\ directory
Install a fresh seamonkey. the new profile will be empty.
What can i do to retrieve all the mail/newsgroup part ?
When I importe the bookmark.html file, it would re-instate bookmark
toolbar, bookmark menu and other bookmarks ?

For Ubuntu-related stuff, I concur on Ubuntuzilla. Part of it is that I
have a strong bias towards getting updates via repositories, and I
consider the methodology of manual download and install to be something
to be relegated to Windows. Plus, working via repository makes it easy
to review version numbers, as well as uninstall, if needed, via the
package manager.

I started using Ubuntuzilla several years ago when Ubuntu's maintainers
quit supporting Seamonkey. I've found it to be reliable, and pretty
quick -- enough that when a new version of Seamonkey is released, it
often gets updated on my Ubuntu installation before I get around to
doing the manual process of download and install in Windows. And for
what it's worth, since my Ubuntu installation is still 18.04 and the
officially-supported version of Thunderbird is still 68.10, I used
Ubuntuzilla to upgrade to the current 78.x installations.

I have Mint on a VM, and I haven't tried Ubuntuzilla on the Mint
installation, because I don't run Seamonkey there, but I have no reason
to believe that it shouldn't behave the same way there as it does in Ubuntu.

On Windows, there are tools for maintaining package updates that I'm
aware of. PatchMyPc and Ninite don't include Seamonkey. SUMo (Software
Update Monitor -- not to be confused with SUpport.MOzilla.org) does
include Seamonkey, but an unpaid version only shows available updates,
and it takes a paid copy to be able to download/install.

I also checked chocolatey -- it's the most Linux-like in its approach
(and takes a little more configuration work), and it's been a couple of
years since I played with it, but the support web page does report that
they can do Seamonkey.

So, what are the options for finding out about new releases after
this newsgroup is gone?

Bob

Depending on which operating system platform you are using, and, how
it is done for the operating system that you use, in Ubuntu Linux, I
have added the sourceforge ubuntuzilla repository to my sources file,
for upgrades, so that, whenever I perform a system upgrade, that
repository is checked for upgrades to Seamonkey, and, in performing a
system upgrade on my other computer, at present, I have observed that
it is performing an upgrade to Seamonkey.

Which means the repo has a maintainer.

Updates to direct installs from SeaMonkey on any operating system have
been disabled for a long time.

Might the repo maintainer be able to fix it for all of us, or does it do
a complete install over the current version?

It shows (it was done as a command line upgrade, on both of my
computers that I have just upgraded) as an upgrade, rather than as a
new package installation (which is what is shown, for kernel
upgrades).

The package is seamonkey-mozilla-build amd 64 2.53.7-0ubuntu1 so what
I have upgraded, is specific to Ubuntu Linux (as is ubuntuzilla, I
believe), and, I expect that it would not work with Fedora Linux
(which is from (some years ago) Red Hat Linux), which, I believe, uses
rpm packages, rather than deb packages.

What I suggest, is that, for each operating system, the Seamonkey user
does a google search for
seamonkey upgrade
and, hopefully, the results returned, will include a howto, that steps
through the instructions for installing/upgrading seamonkey, for the
particular operating system.

I believe that that is how I found the Sourceforge ubuntuzilla
repository, and, how to apply it, for installing and upgrading
seamonkry on Ubuntu Linux.

I'll stick with getting the application from the SeaMonkey Project site,
and install until/if updates work again.

I only have it installed to provide what little support I can, not being
a user.

With this newsgroup gone, that only leaves the SeaMonkey topic on
mozillaZine to deal with. That's not very active and there are more
knowledgeable users there.

So, what are the options for finding out about new releases after this
newsgroup is gone?

Does a _VIABLE_ SeaMonkey USENET group already exist?

2021-03-30 Thread Richard Owlett

I access USENET via news.supernews.com .
It carries netscape.public.mozilla.seamonkey .
Its activity has be quite low {~600 posts in last decade}.
Will whatever is causing the demise of mozilla.support.seamonkey be
automatically fatal to it also?

Is it carried by enough news servers to be viable?
Sub-question: Is it carried by popular free($) news servers?

Quite often, on UseNet, I come across threads which I don't have the

But, then someone posts into that thread and I see it again.

How do I kill-file a thread, in my SeaMonkey, so I never see it again
. until I completely reload that newsgroup?? CTRL-K, maybe or
Shift-k??

TIA.

When I hit K I never see that thread or any remnants of it again.
Gone forever unless I manually edit the RC file.
Walt may right on it being a bug.

Well, that's two that think it works against just me suggesting it
doesn't so I *must* be wrong!! ;-(

Maybe I'll give CTRL-K and/or Shift-K a go!!

(Realising this service will be closing down in a few'ish days!!)

I've been using Shift-k a go for a few days ... and it seems to be
kill-filing the branches of a Thread, so I think it is working correctly.

However, when I want to totally killfile a thread with lots of branches
that should indicate I want to be using Ctrl-k, but Ctrl-k doesn't seem
to do anything.

I noticed this failure in a thread that which had several
"twigs"/sub-threads, where I had to mark each one in sequence.

These are just 'theories' a.t.t, but I'll keep testing. Maybe I need to
use Upper case 'K' to get the proper action!! I'll let you know if
this place is still open when I come to further conclusions!!

seamonkey-dev, and seamonkey-support lists/newsgroups

2021-03-30 Thread Edmund Wong
Dear All,

If you're not aware by now, please let me state that both the Mailing
Lists and Newsgroups will be decommissioned soon (Early April).

Why?
===

Why indeed. Tbh, I don't know why. I would believe it's related
to the overhead of maintenance and such; but whatever the
reasons are, it's a fact. This is going to go to /dev/null.

What to do?
==

We're in the process of finding alternatives to these methods of
communications.

Yes, I'm quite dismayed at the loss of the newsgroups; but I'm
sure we'll make do with what we come up with as an alternative.

So please monitor any updates to https://blog.seamonkey-project.org.

Thanks!

Edmund
