that it will use my profile, and how can I stop it from updating to
2.46

The reload and re-install of 2.40 worked, and everything is working OK
again. I still don't know how to stop the automatic updating to 2.46
which I don't want to do until I know it works (maybe the next update?)

Thank you. I'll be honest, this is the first time since Netscape 1.0
that an update has failed so disastrously. This really scares me, since
I don't know what I'd do without SeaMonkey.

Yep. I've been using Sea Monkey since Mozilla abandoned its predecessor
the Mozilla Suite and never had problems other than maybe a minor one
occasionally when upgrading. Upgrade to 2.46 was a disaster on my
default profile but ok on a newish profile with only two extensions. I
can't understand why we were not warned that no checking of extension
compatibility with this version would be done and that NO extensions
being used that were converted via LemonJuice's SeaMonkey extension
converter would work and that disaster would ensue if we tried to update
without first uninstalling all converted extensions. I'm left
wondering why SeaMonkey is being continued since it is now Fx and no
point in it.

I did not use an automatic update. I prefer to get the new installer
and install manually. I have not had problems with extensions, and most
of mine have been converted or tweaked to install into SeaMonkey. I
also have a habit of changing the max version for SeaMonkey in
install.rdf to 3.0 to stop the add-on from being marked incompatible.

Hi Ken,

Can you clarify what operating system you're running 2.40 on?

Win-7. But I haven't checked back here for a few days since the reload
of SM 2.40 worked fine and I haven't had any problems since. I'll check
frequently to see when ver. 2.47 is released since I don't have
automatic updates anymore. I suppose I should try to update at that
time for security purposes etc. I hope they fix the problems by then.

Extension checking is in the Mozilla backend and changed significatly between
2.40 and 2.46 (mostly not for the better). Signing requirements are turned off
but still some checks for sideloaded apps are done. Extensions might get
disabled but from tests reenabling them again worked. No reinstall needed.

And SeaMonkey is not Fx or I would probably looking for another browser :)

His user agent string says Windows 7.

Yours says Windows 8.1.

Profile: Once you try using 2.46, you might not be able to use your
profile when you revert to 2.40. Restore your profile from the last
backup prior to installing 2.46. You do have a backup, do you not?

Block automatic updates:

1. On the SeaMonkey menu bar, select [Edit > Preferences].

2. On the left side of the Preferences window (under Category), select
[Advanced > Software Installation].

3. On the Software Inatallation pane under SeaMonkey, select or clear
the checkboxes as you wish.

4. Select the OK button.

How about filing a bug for the two issues. #2 is likely profile related and #1
might be also. If yes this won't go away.

To be honest: as no one reported similar problems, it is very likely
that you either have incompatible addons installed (tried safe mode with
all addons disabled?) or something in your profile is broken (tried
temporarily a new profile?).

Actually that's not true. Read above - those issues are known.
Regarding the data manager is that seems to be an issue for large old
profiles and it just temporarily locks up then is fine.
I fixed mine by going though and getting rid of a ton of old legacy
entries going back to Netscape 3.x that I didn't need. Now it works fine.
