I notice you and rickman are running 64 bit Windows. The last time I used SM 2.40 on Windows XP I never saw the problem. My current OS is the i386 build of Debian 9.1 (Stretch) and SeaMonkey User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:51.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/51.0 SeaMonkey/2.48 Build identifier: 20170706221455 I've been using the Linux flavor of SeaMonkey since 2014 without problems. Sometimes this program sucks! :P I doubt very much SeaMonkey is the culprit. I date back to days of Netscape 4.? and have not had a similar problem. As a workaround I would suggest going to "Server Settings" for the affected news server. Record the information listed for "newsrc file: and "Local directory:". Then, with SeaMonkey shutdown, routinely backup that file and that directory.
