Re: Unable to run seamonkey on Debian 8.3

2016-03-19 Thread Rainer Bielefeld

Hi all,

I submitted "Bug 1257256 - State clearly that Linux builds in Table are
for 32bit only" .

Generally for such clear bugs a participant of the discussion should do
that to initiate a fix.

A remark "The webmaster should ..." in a discussion here will not
initiate a fix.

Totall agree. Moreover on the official downloads page (URL:
https://download.mozilla.org/?product=seamonkey-2.40=linux=en-US)
on which there's a green box with the words "Download Now", there's no
mention as to whether the download, Linux GTK2 English (38MB), is for
x86 or x86_64 arch.

The webmaster should specify clearly that the download link in the
green box is for 32-bit arch.

Anyone using SeaMonkey for any length of time knows that the official
builds for Windows, Mac and Linux are 32-bit.

If you want an unofficial 64-bit Linux build you have to go here.

AFAIK there are none for Windows and Mac.

The official build for Mac OS is 64-bit these days.

True, but IMO Amanda's right that the website should be clear,
especially in the case of Linux. The vast majority of Linux machines
are 64-bit (but I don't know whether most of those are multilib or
not). The release notes and system requirements don't say anything
about the download being 32-bit, either. If a new user only comes along
once in a blue moon, that's all the more reason to want to give her a
not-so-frustrating experience.

I downloaded the latest version 2.40, x86_64 architecture whose URL is to be
found under the sub-heading "Contributed builds (other platforms". I untarred
it and am able to launch it without problem. Thanks.

You're right. On Debian 8.3, in the home directory, there's a hidden folder
called .mozilla. When I opened it, there were two folders: firefox (for
Iceweasel) and seamonkey. Conclusion: firefox and seamonkey don't share
profiles.

OK, so this seems to be the unhelpful message one gets when
trying to run a 32-bit binary on a 64-bit system where the
32-bit support libraries are NOT installed.

Try this one:

https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/2.39/contrib/seamonkey-2.39.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2

Untar somewhere convenient (like /opt)
and then just run /opt/seamonkey as a regular user.

Not sure about the weasel, but Firefox uses .mozilla/firefox
while seamonkey uses .mozilla/seamonkey, so no shared profiles.

Amanda Sheppard wrote:

Hi

I have Debian 8.3-amd64 on my machine and Iceweasel was installed by
default.

I downloaded seamonkey-2.39.tar.bz2 from
http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/ and followed the instructions
found on http://www.seamonkey-project.org/doc/install-and-uninstall

In a terminal I did the following

username@hostname:~/seamonkey$ ./seamonkey
bash: ./seamonkey: No such file or directory
username@hostname:~/seamonkey$

Did you untar it first?

tar jxvf seamonkey-2.*.tar.bz2

That creates the seamonkey directory under wherever you downloaded the
tgz file to.

I used the Ubuntuzilla PPA with Ubuntu

which uses a deb package and installation was a snap. Seamonkey is
located here

~$ which seamonkey
/usr/bin/seamonkey

and the profile is located here under:

~/.mozilla/seamonkey

What happened? I used the default file manager in Gnome to navigate to
seamonkey directory and found there was indeed a seamonkey file.

Help to solve the above problem would be much appreciated.

Another question: I have Iceweasel installed. If I do get seamonkey
running, will its profile directory clash with Iceweasel's profile
directory?

So I would assume Iceweasel's profile would be something like

~/.mozilla/iceweasel/

Take care,
