There's the 360 degree pot on the Soundfield Mk V that lets you spin a first
order Ambisonic image; it was/is accessible via the monitor path.

What was/is around in terms of analogue physical 3D or horizontal only
panners? I've seen the little joystick things on desks. Was wondering what
else?

If you have access, there are details here:

Do you mean panners using analog electronics and physical controls to
pan the sound through analog only electronics (without any computing
involved),

or physical controllers as input devices for digital sound panners? For
interactive installations, I built/used/seen:

- big trackballs (like those in vintage video games)

- long levers (like giant joysticks)

- cameras, presence detectors, touch screens...

Basically, any controller can be used.

Thanks Marc I'm aware nearly everything has some kind of chip or pcb in it
these days even if it "seems" analogue. I really am mainly interested in
"pure" analogue things for this thread preferably with no digital
components whatsoever. I am not anti digital or anything like that just
curious.

Many (most?) eurorack modules are using non-analog components. Eurorack
is not really the vinyl of modular synthesis.

In the case of this Planar2 module, digipots chips could used, or the
whole thing could be digital, except for the analog pots of the joystick
(for some physically induced control signals). A quick search for images
of "intellijel planar2" reveals its STM32 Arm computer.

Re: [Sursound] Analogue 3D / surround sound panners?

2020-02-16 Thread Dave Malham
The "3d panner with inductance coils" was designed by Jacques Poullin for
Pierre Schaeffer in 1951. It's well described in "Poullin, Jacques (1957)
The application of recording techniques to the production of new musical
materials and forms. Applications to ‘Musique Concrete’ National Research
Council of Canada Technical Translation TT-646, Translated from the
original in L’Onde Électrique 34 (324): 282-291, 1954 by D.A. Sinclair,
Ottawa 1957". Interestingly it's not only a very early 3D panner (possibly
only preceded by the system used in Disney's 'Fantasia') but also a very
early example of voltage control - predating Moog by several years.

Good question. I also quite like Stockhausens solution of putting musicians
and noise generators on platforms that whirled round the auditorium. Not
practical for most of us though...

Interesting to note that Pink Floyd started to experiment with surround

Do you mean panners using analog electronics and physical controls to
pan the sound through analog only electronics (without any computing
involved),

or physical controllers as input devices for digital sound panners? For
interactive installations, I built/used/seen:

- big trackballs (like those in vintage video games)

- long levers (like giant joysticks)

- cameras, presence detectors, touch screens...

Basically, any controller can be used.

Re: [Sursound] Analogue 3D / surround sound panners?

2020-02-15 Thread Dave Hunt
Over two decades ago I had a pair of quad pots made by Penny & Giles. Totally
passive with conductive plastic tracks. Very nice, but limited to four outputs
(or I suppose for mixing four inputs to mono), and fairly pricey. There wasn’t
a lot else available at the time apart from the Audio & Design (??) ambisonic
panner and decoder. This one doesn’t seem to be available any more.

I used them a few times, but sold them after they had been stuck in a cupboard
for several years.

Otherwise it would be possible to construct something with a cheaper, more
readily available, pan pot, and a bunch of VCA’s. As the pots in most quad pots
don’t cover the whole of their range some sort of scaling and offset for each
output is required, even for just four outputs. More outputs would require
different scalings and offsets.

Or as Conan Wynne suggested, some Modular synth bits.

Ciao,

Dave Hunt

Thanks ,
Conan that modular thing looks great. I know a few people who just dont
like using computers for live electronica but want to incorporate 3D sound
- this would great,
a lot of them are really into their modular stuff too.

I had some success in modular using a planar, if you had 2 you could do
some interesting stuff in 3D,

I mean completely analogue. I use things like the leap or wii for digital.
I mean if you didn't want to use any software at all.
