[sustainable_tompkins-l] FREE kids//teen science activity

2016-09-09 Thread Community Science Institute
Who: The Community Science Institute's 4-H2O program and YOU
What: Water sampling and orienteering at Stewart Park
Where: Meet at the East Pavilion in Stewart Park, Ithaca
Date: Tuesday September 13th
Time: 4- 6 pm

All ages are welcome. Children 7 and under must have a parent or guardian
present at all times.

We’ll be collecting water samples that will contribute to the Community
Science Institute’s public database of water quality in our area and we’ll
'orienteer' our way to the sampling locations. Who knows what else we’ll
find there!

We’ll learn how to use chemistry to test for 3 different water quality
parameters (and learn what a parameter is!) and maybe play a little bit of
water trivia along the way. Know any good water jokes? Be sure to bring
them along.

[sustainable_tompkins-l] Tree Identification Walk for Kids!

2016-09-09 Thread Edie Jodz
Tree Identification Walk for
Kids!
Hosted by the Finger Lakes Land Trust
Saturday, September 17 at 10:00 am
Ellis Hollow Nature
Preserve

In honor of the 10th Anniversary of the Land Trust's Emerald
Necklace project,
naturalist and longtime volunteer Betsy Darlington will lead a tree
identification walk designed especially for kids! Located just east of Ithaca,
the Ellis Hollow Nature
Preserve is a
great place for kids to explore. This event is free and open to the public.

The Emerald Necklace is an ambitious effort to conserve an uninterrupted green
corridor extending through 50,000 acres of conserved land from Finger Lakes
National Forest in the west to Hammond Hill and Yellow Barn State Forests in
the east. Through this project, the Land Trust and a variety of public and
private sector partners are working together to protect open space, public
drinking water and wildlife habitat.

Directions: From Ithaca, follow Ellis Hollow Road 2.5 miles past East Hill
Shopping Plaza. Turn left on Genung Road, then right on Ellis Hollow Creek
Road. Preserve entrance is located 0.2 miles past intersection, on left side of
road.

[sustainable_tompkins-l] Now for some good news - GEOTHERMAL ROCKS

2016-09-09 Thread Deborah Cipolla-Dennis
Take a look at the ambitious plan that Cornell is hatching related to
community geothermal for heating. I can see so many possibilities with this
if it is successful.
