[sustainable_tompkins-l] TWO Great Teen and Child Events Coming Up Next Weekend with the Community Science Institute!

2017-09-05 Thread Community Science Institute
On *Saturday, September 9th* we'll grab our waterproof boots and head to
Six Mile Creek where we'll collect and identify the insects that live among
the rocks.

On *Sunday, September 10th* we set sail with the Floating Classroom to
learn about the lake and collect water quality data.

Critters in the Stream: Biomonitoring to learn about water quality

*Saturday September, 9th* from *2:00 pm - 4:00 pm*

We'll be venturing out to Six Mile Creek near Plain Street to look at some
of the insects that live among the rocks in the riffles of streams,
otherwise known as benthic macroinvertebrates. We'll use kick nets to
capture a stream sample from the creek, pull out and identify organisms,
and learn what they tell us about water quality.

Come one, come all! This event is for all ages. Feel free to make it a
family affair!

*if you're interested please contact us at i...@communityscience.org or
adria...@communityscience.org or 607-257-6606 <(607)%20257-6606> so that we
can provide you with directions to the sampling site.

The Floating Classroom*Sunday, September 10th, 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm.*

*Looking for a fun Sunday activity? Love Cayuga Lake and want to learn more
about it?*

Whether you're a regular or a first-time boater, set sail with CSI to soak
up some science and embrace the the onset of Fall! For the 12th year
running, CSI's 4-H2O program will be partnering with The Floating Classroom
to collect and analyze water samples across Cayuga Lake. Participants will
learn how to collect water samples, including samples from 150' down in the
lake, and will analyze them while on board the MV Haendal. Data collected
by volunteers are included in our online database.

This is a great chance to not only participate in real scientific data
collection but also view the lake from a different perspective.

We will set sail from the Ithaca Farmers Market dock at 3:30 p.m. Please
arrive by 3:15 p.m. so we can get you checked in and learn your names!

Register for this FREE event by emailing i...@communityscience.org or
calling 607-257-6606. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
**This program is free for children under 16 and one accompanying adult.
Additional adult tickets may be purchased for $20 by contacting Bill Foster
at **floatingclassr...@gmail.com **. All
ticket proceeds will support Floating Classroom youth education programs!*

PLEASE NOTE: Spots are limited and cancellations less than 72 hours prior
to departure often result in vacant seats that cannot be filled. The result
is that children who could have participated cannot.

[sustainable_tompkins-l] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tompkins County Official Elected to NRC Board of Directors

2017-09-05 Thread Geoff Dunn

Ithaca, NY – Barbara Eckstrom, Tompkins County’s Director of Recycling and
Materials Management, has been elected to the National Recycling Coalition
(NRC) Board of Directors.

The elections were held during the 2017 Resource Recycling Conference in
Minneapolis, MN.

The NRC is a non-profit organization that is focused on the promotion and
enhancement of recycling in the United States, with a network of more than
6,000 members that extends across waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and
composting.

Eckstrom was appointed Tompkins County’s first ever Solid Waste Manager in
1989, and oversaw the closing of the old County landfills and implementation of
several successful recycling programs.

Under Eckstrom’s leadership, the County has achieved a 60% waste diversion
rate, and in recent years introduced food scraps recycling and public space
recycling initiatives to County residents.

“My election to the NRC Board will surely give our department more
opportunities for resources and further involvement at the national level,”
said Eckstrom. “I look forward to future collaborations that will put New York
State on the map in the way we use, manage, and recycle our natural resources.”
