[sustainable_tompkins-l] Next week: Renewable Heat Workshops in Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo!

2017-11-08 Thread Lindsay Speer
Please share widely! I went to two of the workshops in the Hudson Valley
last month. Jay Egg is great. There will be installers at each one too,
following the Solarize model of organizing.

Physicians, Scientists, and Engineers for Healthy Energy calculate that we
need conversion of 126,000 buildings per year from fossil fuels to
efficient electric in order to meet NY’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas
emissions 40% by 2030.

This is where it starts.

Actually, Heat Smart Tompkins is way ahead of the rest of us. So let's
revise that to say "this is where the rest of us start catching up."

Currently almost 40% of NYS greenhouse gas emissions come from heating and
cooling buildings, and we must switch from fossil fuel combustion to
renewable heating and cooling technologies in order to combat climate
change and reach our renewable energy goals. We already have efficient
electric technologies for this; and we must implement these technologies,
*not* build more fossil fuel infrastructure. An excellent example is
Albany's Empire State Plaza; instead of burdening an economically
disadvantaged neighborhood with a fracked gas plant, the Empire Plaza could
use geothermal heating and cooling. This opportunity is outlined in Jay
Egg's November 6 article in Renewable Energy World

[sustainable_tompkins-l] Syracuse Feb. 17 Workshop on Switching NY to fossil-free heat

2017-02-14 Thread Lindsay Speer

*What is renewable heating and cooling, and how do we get it?*

In New York, most of us use fossil fuels to heat our homes and workplaces,
and this is responsible for a large portion of the greenhouse gas emissions
in the state. This is also driving gas infrastructure and pipelines in New
York.

Next week, Arjun Makhijani, Ph.D., Project Scientist at the Institute for
Energy and Environmental Research, will be speaking at locations across New
York State about the findings of his study that will be released on
Monday, "Making Residential Heating and Cooling Climate-Friendly in New
York State."

These free, open-to-the-public workshops will discuss the economics,
technologies, and benefits of renewable-ready space heating and the
policies that will equitably transition New York to air-source and
ground-source (geothermal) heat pumps.

THIS IS TIMELY. Governor Cuomo just announced a proposed $15 Million rebate
program for renewable heating and cooling
.
This is a big victory that many of you helped make happen with your phone
calls and postcards. NYSERDA is taking comments through March 10. Our
workshops provide an opportunity to learn about renewable-ready heating and
cooling technologies and policies in order to take advantage of these
rebates and to comment NYSERDA's proposal.

[sustainable_tompkins-l] 7 PM Tuesday- film about local indigenous efforts to protect water

2016-10-31 Thread Lindsay Speer

*FILM: The Good Mind*
Q with filmmaker, local indigenous leaders to follow.
Robert Purcell Community Center Auditorium, Cornell University
Open to the public.

Tadadaho Sid Hill (Onondaga Nation), Jeanne Shenandoah (Onondaga Nation),
Faithkeeper Oren Lyons (Onondaga Nation) and filmmaker Gwendolen Cates at a
special screening of The Good Mind. Cates has recently returned from
Standing Rock and all will be available for Q after the film.

The Onondaga Nation in central New York State is the Central Fire of the
Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy). This sovereign indigenous government,
which follows the Great Law of Peace, inspired American democracy. The
Onondagas advocate for the environment and share prophecies about climate
change, while engaged in a battle with the state over ancestral lands
stolen in defiance of a treaty with George Washington.

The Good Mind is the Onondaga and Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy)
philosophy and way of life. When the Peacemaker brought his message 1,000
years ago to the shores of sacred Onondaga Lake, he united warring peoples
with a system of governance based on using the Good Mind to make decisions
not only for the present, but for the next seven generations.

Sponsored by the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program,
Multicultural Resource Center, and TST Boces.

“*The Good Mind” premieres locally at SpringFest film festival*

*Film highlights people, issues, and culture of the Onondaga Nation*

Syracuse, NY—A new film featuring the Onondaga Nation will premiere in
Central New York on April 30, 2016 during the Syracuse International Film
Festival’s third annual SpringFest. “The Good Mind,” a new film by New York
filmmaker Gwendolen Cates, follows Onondaga Nation leaders as they continue
the efforts of their ancestors to protect their sovereignty, their culture,
and the environment while seeking justice over ancestral lands that were
stolen in defiance of a treaty with George Washington. The Onondaga Nation,
one of the six nations of the Haudenosaunee, is one of the few Native
nations in North America that has retained its traditional government and
language, and a portion of its ancestral lands.

A panel discussion will follow the film, including the filmmaker, Onondaga
Nation Faithkeeper Oren Lyons, and Joseph Heath, General Counsel for the
Onondaga Nation. Two other short films will be shown in the same time slot,
including “My Identity” and “Iroquois Creation Story.”

“This film tells our story,” states Sid Hill, the Tadodaho of the
Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy). “It shares how as a nation we still
raise up our leaders in our traditional way while maintaining our
responsibilities to Mother Earth and our communities, as we have done for
over a thousand years, and how we have remained relevant in a modern
world.”

The movie explores the Onondaga Nation’s role in many of the environmental
issues of our day, from Onondaga Lake to fracking to climate change, as
well as the importance of lacrosse and of traveling on their own passports.
The movie also provides deep insights into the Onondaga Nation’s Land
Rights Action, which was filed as a petition with the Organization of
American States’ Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in April 2014
after legal remedies were exhausted within the United States’ court system.

“Learning about the Treaty of Canandaigua was my moment of realizing the
Onondaga Nation’s story needed to be told,” said filmmaker Gwendolen Cates.
“George Washington promised recognition and protection of Haudenosaunee
lands, and the cloth payments for that treaty still arrive at Onondaga
every year. But New York State, in defiance of the Canandaigua Treaty stole
most of the Onondaga Nation’s lands. Onondaga Lake, where the Peacemaker
brought together the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca Nations
to form the Haudenosaunee confederacy over 1000 years ago, was so badly
polluted that it became a Superfund site. And yet the Onondaga Nation
continues to work with their neighbors to protect the lands from further
degradation.”

Cates first met Onondaga Nation leaders in 2000 while working on her book*,
Indian Country*. Numerous short film projects ultimately led to the
creation of *The Good Mind*, including the award-winning film *Guswenta *about
the 400th anniversary of the first treaty between the Haudenosaunee and the
Dutch in 2013.

Since 2003, the Syracuse International Film Festival continues to
entertain, inform and inspire the community through innovative and engaging
film and media. SpringFest, held the last weekend in April, celebrates
local life with a great line-up of films with a CNY connection.

“The Good Mind” will be shown on April 30, 2016 at 12:30 PM as a part of
Syracuse International Film Festival’s SpringFest 2016 event at the Palace
Theatre in Syracuse, NY.

It will likely appear in the weekend print papers tomorrow.

There's a great video of Watkins Glen State Park embedded in it too,
