Re: [Biofuel] Liberty BD Issues?

2006-02-19 Thread David Thornton
Hey Kurt, My comment is not directly related to the liberty, But I drive a
2000 GMC sierra K2500, and i've had some trouble with the computer.
The Problems: when running on higher percentages of biodiesel such as b60
and up, the check engine light comes on. After calling customer service and
talking to my mechanic we've isolated it to two issues. 1) High percentages
of Biodiesel are triggering an Oxygen sensor
 2) The higher temperature that high blends burn at are
causing a malfunction in the PMD (powertrain management device) which is
unwisely mounted under the exhuast manifold and attached to the Injection
pump where the temp can get pretty hot. The malfunction causes the truck to
revert to a limp mode where it fires on a preset compression ratio and the
mileage thus drops to only about 15mpg, where the truck is typically
17-20mpg.

These problems resolve themself and the light turns off after running a full
tank of straight petro. For those of you experiencing the same problem on
the same truck I can email you the solution.

[Biofuel] BTU's to produce synthetic magnesium sillicate -vs- mined talc

2006-02-18 Thread David Thornton
We've been using magnesol to wash our homebrew here at Piedmont Biofuels and
the question has risen of the BTU's required to produce magnesol (synthetic
magnesium sillicate) vs the BTU's required to mine natural talc. My
intuition is that magnesol requires less BTU's than talc. I'm led to believe
this because the cost is cheaper. Just wondering if anyone on this list had
any stats or could direct me to a souce that I might find some answers. \
Respect,
David

Re: [Biofuel] All plastic processor

2005-09-06 Thread David Thornton
I've been using an ethylene processor, using jb welding on the joints. Made
about 45 gallons then it started leaking. Just make sure to really rough up
surfaces that the jb weld will adhere too, and cake it on. good luck.

[Biofuel] two questions on biodiesel storage

2005-07-11 Thread David Thornton

Greetings all,
I had a 10 gallon batch of biodiesel stored in my wash tank, undecanted from
the water, stored in such a way for two weeks (busy with finals, then took a
brief holiday). I've separated the bd and since washed it twice more yet
it's appearance is murky.
My two questions are 1)Could this be from leaving it in the wash tank for so
long?

2) Are there any remedies?
Your help will be much appreciated.
Respect,
David Thornton

Re: [Biofuel] Start-up questions

2005-05-03 Thread David Thornton

I'm working on a similar no-budget project at my university. I obtained the
following materials at no cost.

55 gallon sealed drum - Jiffy lube for heating and mixing
30 gallon sealed HDPE drum- Jiffy lube possibly methoxide mix tank
55 gallon HDPE rain barrel- Friends of the Rappohannock (already had usable
spout on it) for washing
300 gallon HDPE storage tank with spouts and pump attatchment- City of
Fredericksburg For storing waste oil
I approached these organizations explaining that i was gathering materials
for a non-profit research project. I have credited them in my presentations
as being sponsors. Hope these ideas help.
*I have not yet built this processor yet. I have made a 15 gallon portable
single tank processor and am modifying those plans to make a larger batch
processor to fuel the diesel maintenance vehicles (tractors, trucks,
backhoe,generators...)- David
Hello,

I'm involved with Cascade People's Center, a family support center near
downtown Seattle. We are a non-profit family support center that
provides free programs for children, youth, families, and individuals.

One of our programs, the Advocate's Task Force, has decided to start a
biodiesel project. We hope to start making and selling biodiesel as a
source of sustainable income for the center, as grants and other funding
sources are hard to come by.

Our biggest challenge right now is finding materials for the processor.
We have almost no budget to work from, so we are wondering if you have
any ideas about how to get the materials for little or no cost. What has
worked for you? Also, we are wondering what is needed in terms of
licensing, and if a permit is needed for the transportation of waste
veggi oil.

I appreciate your time and look forward to your response!

Stay Well,

[Biofuel] Re: Mileage on diesel trucks...

2005-03-09 Thread David Thornton

averaging 17.5. My mix varies, but I've noticed no difference in mpg
compared to fossil D.

Just wondering if anyone has any specs on mpg for diesel pickups when
using biodiesel? Specifically the Cummins 5.7l Turbo diesels in the Dodge
pickups. Does the mileage drastically increase over diesel? I found mpg
for regular diesel, but not too much on biodiesel.

Thanks!

[Biofuel] student seeking info on conducting Feasability Studies...part of Thesis

2005-01-07 Thread David Thornton

My name is David and i'm a student at university of Mary Washington as well
as a home brewer. I was originally drawn to biodiesel for 3 reasons: 1) its
resistance to multinational oil corporations, 2) its lower emissions, and 3)
the ability to make my own fuel. As I've become more involved in the
biodiesel scene here in VA I've encountered several municipalities (or is it
municipals...whatever) as well as universities which have adopted biodiesel
into their fleets. I have had my thesis approved (major: Sustainable
Development ( focusing on greening capitalism) to conduct a study of the
feasiblity of buying and/or brewing BD on site for the university and city
fleets. While i have a good idea of what is entailed in a feasability
study, i understand that there is a general format which biodiesel
consultants tend to follow. I'm hoping there is a consultant out there who
can send me a copy of a feasability study that i may use as a guideline in
my study, or at least list for me some of the important criteria. I have a
general outline of my approach to this study for anyone interested.
Also, I'd like to know what kinds of grants are available for student BD
research that would apply for a student researching BD for a University or
City.
This is an amazing blog. I've learned so much from it and thank you all for
participating. I hope to hear from you soon.

cheers,
David T

[Biofuel] Biodiesel Available in Northern Va

2004-12-18 Thread David Thornton

at 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sundays 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. We are located
on the Pentagon Reservation at 801 South Joyce Street, Arlington, Virginia.

After more than two years and lots of hard work by many of you, it is now
official - effective 15 December, 2004 the Biodiesel facility at Quarters
K opened for business. The Navy Exchange is very proud to offer this new
member of our alternative fuels family of products at Quarters K. Along
with E-85 and Compressed Natural Gas, Biodiesel is another way to Fuel the
Future.

The facility was constructed using a state-of-the-art above ground storage
tank supplied by Clayton Enterprises, LLC Bryant Tank Systems out of
Bakersfield, CA. The dispensing system is a Tokheim H322 dispenser tied to
the existing point of sale system and capable of doing pay at the pump
services. The construction was brought to us in cooperation with the Navy's
ROICC Office at Naval District Washington. The construction was performed
by McGrath Contractors, LLC and it took 40 days, start to finish.

The product is B20 biodiesel supplied by Tri-Gas Oil Company, Inc. out of
Federalsburg, MD. B20 is a blend of Biodiesel B100 and petroleum diesel
(petrodiesel). B100 or neat biodiesel is manufactured from vegetable
oils, recycled cooking grease or animal fats, and petroleum diesel. The B20
offered at Quarters K is a blend of 20% soy oil from soy beans and 80%
petrodiesel. The Navy Exchange uses the American Society for Testing and
Materials (ASTM) standard ASTM D 6751 for biodiesel and ASTM D 975 for
petrodiesel when purchasing B20.

Biodiesel is a cleaner-burning fuel for diesel engines. It greatly reduces
the amount of carbon monoxide diesel engines produce. The ozone forming
potential of the hydrocarbon emissions of biodiesel is nearly 50% less than
that of petroleum fuel and biodiesel contains essentially no sulfur,
therefore reducing sulfur dioxide exhaust from diesel engines. Biodiesel
provides significantly higher lubricity as compared to conventional diesel
and B20 specifically has demonstrated similar fuel consumption, horsepower,
and torque as petroleum diesel.

While the price of biodiesel is higher than conventional diesel, the price
gap continues to narrow. The Navy Exchange price today is $2.389 per
gallon.

Quarters K is the first gas station in the Navy Exchange System to offer
three alternative fuels, and the first location to offer Biodiesel. This
project supports the Executive Order 13149, Greening the Government Through
Federal Fleet and Transportation Efficiency - another way for the
government to exercise leadership in petroleum reduction.

The project is the dream of many with participation from both government and
industry partners. The cost to develop the project was $114K. We want to
thank the following departments and organizations for their insight,
persistence and financial contributions to see this worthwhile project
through:

Department of the Army
United States Department of Agriculture
Commonwealth of Virginia
Iowa Soybean Promotion Board
Nebraska Soybean Board
Maryland Soybean Board
Department of Energy
Department of the Interior
National Biodiesel Board

We look forward to seeing all of you there.

[Biofuel] Affordable Sources for bulk isopropyl alcohol

2004-10-14 Thread David Thornton

run into some trouble finding affordable sources for bulk isopropyl alcohol
of 99% purity. Can anyone share some sources with me. I'm also researching
opening a BD fueling station, or delivery service. I'm conducting this
research for my Undergrad Thesis and hope to begin to supply BD in the DC
metro area if it is feasable. Let me know if you have any valuable resources
for me.

Thanks
