Re: [biofuel] Re: glycerin buyers?
Keith, I have not made biodiesel myself, but have researched it a lot. Can you check my figures as to the available heat from the glycerin? Heat capacity of oil ~ 0.5 BTU/lb/F Heat of combustion ~ 12-14 BTU/gal (depending on which oil) Density of water ~ 8lb/gal Density of oil ~ 0.7*water ~ 6lb/gal %yield of glycerin ~ 10% T increase ~ 100F Heating 100lbs of oil 100F = (0.5)*(100lbs)*(100F) = 5,000 BTU Yielding 10lbs of glycerin or ~ 1.66 gal Heat of combustion of 1.66 gal of glycerin = (12)*(1.66) ~ 200,000 BTU According to my estimates you only need to recovery 2.5% of the heat of combustion of the glycerin to preheat the oil. Let me know if anyone has any different values above and I can recalculate. I don't think it will travel up a wick - I tried it without success (biodiesel won't either). As for heating the biodiesel process, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I checked this out a while back and the tidings were that if you managed to harness the full heat of combustion available from that amount of glycerine, there might just be enough to heat up the WVO from 20 deg C to 25, rather doubtful though, probably more like 21. There just isn't enough of it. :-( Best wishes Keith Yahoo! Groups Sponsor -~-- Get A Free Psychic Reading! Re: [biofuel] Re: glycerin buyers?
It has been suggested that since it is a sugar ... er. alcohol er somewhere in between, that it would (and does) make an excellent fuel for biological processes... I was wondering if it might not be a suitable additive to yeasts used to make ethanol, or as a feedstock for diesel producing algae On Wed, 14 May 2003 12:07 am, Andy Lynn wrote: Doesn't glycerin burn? At those prices, you'd be better off spending a little time making your own soap. At the very least you wouldn't have to buy soap, and at best you could sell it for a couple dollars a bar if you added fragrance and tied a ribbon around it. -BRAH -Original Message- From: mark schofield [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, May 13, 2003 11:50 AM To: biofuel@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [biofuel] Re: glycerin buyers?
