Re: [svg-developers] Announcement: Adobe to Discontinue Adobe SVG Viewer
There are rumours that IE8 will have native svg support. The rumour says that IE7 won't have it because it was too difficult and too late support it, but that a decision was made to support svg in IE8. This makes sense given that IE is slipping in rankings behind other implementations that do support SVG, and it is hard to regain/stop-loss when your competitors offer more than you do. Something to keep in mind is that a technology which supports XAML will easily supports svg, since the there is a huge overlap in functionality only the slightest element name changes. Then again, rumours are just that. Maybe IE staff would care to comment on this rumour Ronan On Wednesday 06 September 2006 09:26, nyem wrote: I cannot find the announcement at adobe's website. Re: [svg-developers] Announcement: Adobe to Discontinue Adobe SVG Viewer
Hi, folks- There is a FAQ associated with this announcement, but of course, it's in Web-unfriendly PDF. I'm forwarding on the text version for your information. Not only are they stopping support for the viewer, which is reasonable, but they are preventing anyone from distributing it other than on an intranet. In my opinion, this is unjustified and downright rude. the short timeframe in which this is happening, 16 months, is not much time for another viewer to come up to speed. I think we should urge Adobe to allow the viewer to be distributed as needed, even if Adobe does not provide support or updates. That said, we will need to transition to a non-ASV SVG environment, which stresses even more the need to code to standards rather than to a particular implementation. - FAQ - ASV EOL FAQ Adobe® SVG Viewer End of Life Frequently Asked Questions This document provides answers to frequently asked questions about Adobe’s decision to discontinue support for Adobe SVG Viewer (“ASV”). When will Adobe discontinue customer support for ASV? Adobe Customer Support will no longer provide support for Adobe SVG Viewer as of January 1, 2007. When will Adobe remove ASV from the download area? Adobe currently plans to remove Adobe SVG Viewer from the Adobe.com download area on January 1, 2008. Features of ASV that are currently known to not work on Vista include (but are not limited to) the View Source command, and support for audio. Can I create my own installer for ASV? You may not create your own installer for Adobe SVG Viewer. The Adobe SVG Viewer End User License Agreement does not permit the user to repackage the product components. Among other reasons, this is because custom-made installers could include bugs that cause problems for Adobe’s customers, and those customers would then turn to Adobe for help. In addition, incorrectly installed ASV components could

Re: [svg-developers] Announcement: Adobe to Discontinue Adobe SVG Viewer
Another speculative muse in the category of looking on the bright side: a) more people will probably start to use Firefox and Opera b) Microsoft, sensing a loss of market share for IE, will decide to reprioritize their own native support for SVG, under the old more features means better software theory c) in hiring the expertise necessary to speed the addition of SVG support into their browser, Microsoft will find itself willing and able to start new fronts of competition with Adobe. For example, they will create a competitor to PDF and make it public domain, they'll donate millions to development of the GIMP and then bundle it with the OS, they'll buy Pixar and build a heads-on competitor for Flash/Director and Lingo (using .net and SVG), and will start giving away all of Corbis' images for free. All this will result in depletion of Microsoft's cash reserves. d) Adobe will have to buy Microsoft just to keep down its competition. Hi, Ronan- Ronan Oger wrote: Yeah right, and compete with their own product? Doug, you are optimistic to a fault. Perhaps. But if you don't ask for something, you're unlikely to get it. This announcement from Adobe had a rather tentative tone in parts, suggesting to me that they might be feeling out community reaction; if that reaction is strongly negative enough, they might not wish to stir up such ill will. Jon Ferraiolo, a veteran of Adobe and a driving force behind SVG, goes even further than I in his suggestions to Adobe. They canned ASV to make room for their commercial solution and have no commercial incentive to keep it there as a thorn in their side for people to build applicatons around. Clearly. But they do have a moral responsibility to the community, regardless of whether they honor that responsibility. On top of that, everyone who has had to rebuild their apps to be ecmascript compliant after using ASV has loudly cursed their javascript implementation... They can only lose on reputation from having an old, unsupported product lying around gathering user ire. This doesn't sound like a very convincing argument to me. People are more aware about standardized scripting now, thanks in no small part to this list. ASV may be permissive in its scripting engine, but it also works (mostly) with the same code that works in Opera and FF. Anyone who has been foolhardy enough to code to ASVG must surely now have learned their lesson. This is the cost of vendor-supplied free addons. Nothing given by a company is free. Opera, Mozilla, and Microsoft are companies which give away their browser for free. I'm sure that all of them have older unsupported version of their browser, but I doubt that they no longer permit their distribution. I think this is highly unorthodox of Adobe. I think that other SVG viewers will now rise to the challenge, and we may be better off without the perception of SVG as an Adobe technology, but I still think this is poor practice by Adobe. My concern with FF, is how slow it is with SVG over 300k. Hopefully within 1.5 years the issue will be solved. I tested it with the FF 2 beta 2, and mouseover events are still laboriously slow. Re: [svg-developers] Announcement: Adobe to Discontinue Adobe SVG Viewer
Hi- Well, I can't say that this comes as a surprise, though it is a pity that they won't allow downloads after January 1, 2008 (as per their FAQ). This means that for SVG to continue to be viable on the Web, before that point there will need to be native IE support (possible) or a new viewer (almost certain, but probably not by as big a name as Adobe). Obviously, Adobe has chosen a proprietary path that will include only Adobe/Macromedia technologies. I guess it all comes down to the bottom line for them, but it's a shame they are moving away from open standards. This seems like a good opportunity for other companies, but a bit of a challenge for authors who want to use SVG. Paton J. Lewis wrote: Adobe has decided to discontinue support for Adobe SVG Viewer.
