RE: [SWCollect] Maxis Collectors?

2002-10-18 Thread Hugh Falk
Thanks Brad, but I'm pretty sure you're incorrect about Sim City. I have 3
versions of it including the C-64, and they all say 1989. This also jives
with my memory. I also researched it heavily when it won the GOTCHA award
for 1989. I had heard reports of '87 as well, but could never substantiate
anything other than 1989. Does anybody else have any physical evidence to
the contrary? Unfortunately, all of my Computer Gaming Worlds are in
storage, or I would check that way as another source (but I believe I
already did).

Otherwise, Skychase was 1988 and therefore before Sim City.

 It's a split-screen, two player combat flight
simulator from 1988. Not what you think of when you mention Maxis, but
it's
a GREAT game. Anybody know an earlier Maxis game?

I just read up on the history of Maxis, and SimCity was actually released
for the commodore in 1987, and was the first game Will Wright (co-founder of
Maxis) got published. However, that was before Maxis. Jeff Braun he
formed Maxis shortly after, and co-published with Broderbund for a short
time, which is apparently the timeframe that Skychase was published, though
there is little mention of it around the net. Contradicting release years
(88 and 90) around the internet lead me to believe it was re-released in
some way shape or form as well.

I saw a copy of RoboSport in a thrift store today. Got home to see
how much it goes for on eBay and couldn't find a single copy, either
active or completed. This leads me to ask, are there people (here or
elsewhere) that collect Maxis games? I know there are collectors of
Infocom and other IF companies, EA (primarily flats), Sierra, and
 probably Origin collectors.

Although Maxis is a relative newcomer compared to some of those, I
figure there must be some Maxis collectors somewhere. I don't recall
anyone here every mentioning it, though. So, anybody want to fess up?

2002-10-18 Thread Alexander Zoller
Not sure how big it was in the states though probably not a big Maxis
collector item since they concentrate more ont he Sim titles and those
were so widely produced that it's a mute point almost.

I remember an auction with roughly ten Sim games on eBay,... all of them
shrinked. No takers, seller had to relist several times before somebody
bid (I think they went for $10 or so). It's possible certain titles will
sell for more occasionally, but typically that stuff is really worthless.

I can't say I know much about Maxis collectors, but I do know that Robosport
had quite the cult following for a while (especially in Europe since it was
released on the Amiga as well as the PC and you could do multiplayer bouts
across the platforms).

Re: [SWCollect] Maxis Collectors?

2002-10-18 Thread CcomputerGameCollector
Hugh

I was just summorizing what I had read. Here's the actual clip from the
story:

Not surprisingly, game publishers had a hard time buying into the concept.
As Wright remembers, publishers such as Broderbund just kept asking me how
I was going to make it into a game. However Wright resisted the pressure to
change his creation and as a result, SimCity didn't have a publisher for the
PC or Mac. Wright would go on to release a Commodore version in 1987, but
the main gaming platforms were out of his reach, at least until he met
self-dubbed idea guy Jeff Braun at a pizza party in 1987. Braun was so
taken by Wright's innovative SimCity design that the two decided to
immediately start their own company to help publish the game on home
computers. They'd call it Maxis.

http://www.gamespot.com/features/maxis/page2.html

There's a good chance that this is just such a rare find that basically
nobody has or remembers it.
