This is something I discussed once with either Alexander Zöller or Richard Pickles: I believe the main reason that makes the mentioned games valuable was the "emptiness" of good adventures in the post-Monkey-Island-2 90s. The list mentioned by Stuart below are but a part of some good adventures (if I'm not mistaken all 5 of them are adventures) that came out in that period. Others like Flight of the Amazon Queen, Igor: Objective Uikokahonia, etc are also extremely rare _and_ coveted adventures, maybe because they were made in Europe. Personally I love it when I list an item with a very reasonable BuyItNow, but some lowballer gets greedy and tries to have it for the starting bid of $2, then a couple of newbies fight over it and end up making me $20 more than I thought possible. I've seen EA CDROM Classics releases of System Shock CD, which is what mine is, I think... I'll have to look. But it certainly didn't seem that rare to me... I was an AVID gamer in the 90's also...the reason why neither you nor I
heard of these games until after they were no longer widely (if at all)
available is that EB didn't carry any of them. Alice was made by a Japanese
company (Synergy Interactive) and was not widely distributed, although
cdaccess.com used to carry it. The other 4 titles were never released in the
US at all...only in the UK. Duckman in particular had such a limited release
that although people had heard of the game, they had never seen it in stores
and for years the popular belief was that the game had been cancelled.
Someone eventually found a German source for the game and this version is
now fairly readily available (the speech is in English, but the subtitles
are in German), but the English version is nearly impossible to find. I know
of only a couple of copies in existence.
Of the short list I gave, I have only played Duckman (the German release).
It was a very fun adventure game and I would recommend it. I can not attest
to the quality of the other titles mentioned (yet).
By the way, EB sucks these days. I went in there specifically to buy the PC
release of Shadow of Destiny, which incidentally is one of the best games
I've ever played. Pick up a copy for either PC or PS2 if you haven't
already. My experience in getting this game was a classic example of why
these titles become lost classics and eventually command high prices. Konami
actually advertised the game in PC Gamer, CGW, etc. but it didn't make its
release date and was rumored to have been cancelled. I eventually found out
months later (from a German Web site, no less) that the game had just been
released (late, and with no fanfare whatsoever), and that EB seemed to be
the only source for it. I went into 3 EBs and didn't see the game anywhere.
I asked the people behind the counter and they told me they didn't have the
game and had never heard of it. They looked in the back room and didn't find
any. I was persistent, though, and got them to look again, and finally I
found one. ("Oh, the computer says we only got in 1 copy.").

There definitely is a difference between rare and valuable. However, when a
game is EXTREMELY rare, it does become valuable, as even demand from a small
number of people can push up the price drastically. I wonder how large the
demand truly is for Mt. Drash, for example. How many people are really
looking for that game? But it doesn't matter, because none of them can find
it, and if one did become available, there would be a bidding war for it.
What makes the games on my list valuable is that demand > supply and the
people that are looking for these games are willing to pay high prices for
them. It seems that a large population of adventure game collectors in
particular has sprung up over the last 5 years, and many of these people are
affluent and can afford to play high prices for games. Most of these people
would throw a Starcross saucer in the garbage (and especially a Mt. Drash
tape) but would shell out any amount of money for an "Alice" or an "Orion
Burger".
A good guide to what crazy people are willing to pay is often the Game
Trading Zone (gametz.com). You can see how many copies of a particular game
are available, if any, and if someone does have one, what they want for it.
Ebay is not so good because they don't archive their auctions for long
enough, but I paid over $200 (ouch, I feel bad admitting this) for a
shrinkwrapped Alice a week or so ago, and I got off easy. The last one I saw
went for twice the price.

And if variations count (which I think should do, since in the poll one option clearly specifies a CD version of a game), rare versions like 10th Anniversary Ultima 6 / Savage Empire should count or the CD version of System Shock

I don't like this poll much. Currently, Kilrathi Saga is winning, but you
can buy a new shrinkwrapped Kilrathi Saga on ebay right now for $175. Last
night I saw a mint opened one for $125. What about the following games from
the 90s:
Alice: An Interactive Museum
Duckman (English version)
Orion Burger
Bud Tucker in Double Trouble
3 Skulls of the Toltecs
To name a few...I can think of a whole bunch more.

I was an AVID gamer in the 90's...even worked at EB in the early 90's and
never heard of one of the games you list below (aside from the ones with
licenses that I know). Are these classic games that I somehow missed?
Should I be looking for them? What makes them so valuable?

I have a lot of extremely rare pre-1990 action games for the PC (Wibarm, for one) but I don't think anyone would call them valuable. What makes the above games valuable?
