[SWCollect] Deal on the side???

2004-01-27 Thread Dan Chisarick
While certainly it could be for legitimate reasons, when all of a
sudden a cluster of desirable, related items is ended early, I can't
help but wonder if there was a little backroom negotiation. I've only
done it a few times myself (usually the seller declines) but in all
cases is was because there was a bundle with only one real prize in it.

Re: [SWCollect] Deal on the side???

2004-01-27 Thread C.E. Forman
In situations like this I like to e-mail the buyer with something like,
"Hey, why did you end this auction early? I was planning to snipe for $50."
>From several eBay accounts, if you have multiples. Make 'em think they're
losing money, next time they won't do it.

This guy had lots of other interesting stuff as well for sale, was tracking
it myself only to find them all closed. Well, for a good enough offer I
guess anything goes, anyone can be tempted :)

I rarely ask myself, only done it once actually, couple of weeks ago but
that seller accepted. Not one of these 20 year old games, only 6 years old.
Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have said that.. it is not oldskool.. I might get
banned from the list.. bugger..

Re: [SWCollect] Deal on the side???

2004-01-27 Thread Stuart Feldhamer
I did this once myself, and I felt very bad about doing it. A seller had, among some
other items, an Adventure in Serenia. I convinced him to sell it to me for a rather
cheap price. Then the next day he told me that somehow his ferret had gotten into the
Serenia and had eaten it up so badly that it was total garbage and he threw it out.
Needless to say, i didn't believe him, and I knew something else was going on, but I
took it as a sign that I was not meant to engage in that sort of behavior.

You have to admit it was a pretty good story though ;) But yeah, I guess
that is sort of a sign. I would not do it unless it was something I badly
wanted(in this case it was a sealed Chaos Gate by SSI/Warhammer), and
offered him quite a good deal so I wouldn't have to feel bad about it myself
in the days to come. He is happy, I am happy, now all rejoice :)

Re: [SWCollect] Deal on the side???

2004-01-27 Thread Dan Chisarick
Impossible. Oldskool is a state of mind :)

I admit I didn't particularly enjoy trying to pull a fast one on the
bidding community at large. I suppose though that if a truly desirable
item appears, its good to chat w/the seller to, at a minimum, let them
know there are several interested parties. Sigh, things can get so
complicated.

Sort of on that note, I have (like many others I'm sure) engaged in
side conversations w/sellers for fun. Sometimes it yields unexpected
benefits (items not yet on ebay find their way into the shipment).
Usually when people tell me how much they've enjoyed a game they sold
me I tell them that I archive them and play them on emulators.

Surprising how many people didn't know that was possible. Several of
them asked how to get started, went onto the local site, downloaded a
few favorites and wrote back how thrilled they were to relive games
they thought they'd never see again. Share the joy.

And knowing they can actually play the games again they just sold you
and quite conveniently so using their current machines, they'd have much
rather kept them and now hate you! ;-)

[SWCollect] Rarity Scale

2004-01-27 Thread Hugh Falk

Hey guys,

This group has tackled the issue of a condition grading
scale.  Does anybody think it’s worth trying to put together a
rarity scale?  You know…to judge how common a game is.  I’d
recommend we call is the CURIOUS scale:

Common

Uncommon

Rare

Imaginary

Oddity

Unique

Shameless placeholder to complete acronym

Seriously, there are a few sites that do this specifically
for cartridge-based media, but wouldn’t it be nice to have one for our
hobby?  How would we judge rarity?  We could poll the list of
collectors for starters.  A place like Brad’s computer game
collector site (http://www.computergamecollector.com)
would be ideal for tracking this info if it was supported by most of us.
We could then add more subjective info like the number of times a game was
spotted on eBay.  It would be great if we could actually track this as
part of the DB.

Anyway, I know this is ambitious…a lot more ambitious
than the condition grading scale, but what do you think?

Speaking of ambitious, I’ll be looking into hotel
conference rooms this week.

Hugh

[SWCollect] PS:T on ebay

2004-01-27 Thread Marco Thorek
Thinking about our "Modern Classics" discussion recently, I just saw
Planescape: Torment go for $64:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3072508588&category=11050

Not bad for a fairly new game.

And sure enough loads of 'em popped up after it :-)

Better to have than having sex? ;-)

Seriously, I think it's a pretty neat idea. Every member of this list
could jude it on personal experience and you could calculate the mean
and the median.
