Should we consider introducing a new, fabricated translation (IIRC this may
have originally been your idea DM), containing all potential books and used
for mapping between different v11n?  I was recently struggling to sort
bookmarks from multiple different v11n and wrote the following at the time:

1. JSword's VersificationsMapper uses KJV as the intermediate mapping so
Vulgate->KJVA will not work for dc books.
What about using a fabricated-v11n which contains all possible books,
chapters and verses as the intermediate v11n.  Maybe this would be based on
something like KJVA

There also seems to be unusual formatting in 1 Chronicles 1 of ERV which
even Xiphos struggles with.

1 Chronicles 1 issues were first reported to me as affecting the HIN2010
module but not the HindiERV module although they 'appear' to have the same
source text.  If we know how these 2 similar modules were generated, and
yet only one has issues, it might help us solve the issues in the ERV, and
also HIN2010.

[sword-devel] ERV issues in And Bible

Would somebody mind checking the OSIS of the ERV in the eBible repository
because it is breaking the And Bible OSIS processor in verses at the end of
some chapters.

Example problem verses are Psalm 2:12 and Psalm 3:8 but there are many more.

The problem is that many verses at the end of chapters have a div with
pre-verse and start-milestone attributes but there is no matching
end-milestone div and the div does not appear to contain anything anyway.

Other front ends seem to cope fine with the format so if the OSIS is valid
I will need to change And Bible.

I had an issue reported to me in Czech.  I am not sure how helpful the
report is.  The following is all I know and auto-translate is not very
helpful:

Dobrý den, používám v mobilu aplikaci And-bible. Děkuji za tuto aplikaci,
je výborná! Zdá se mi, že v Iz 41,7 je malá chybička:
" ... Pak upevní modlu hřeby, aby se nevyklala".  Nemělo by být ve slově
viklat měkké i ? Neviklala?
Hledala jsem i v internetové jazykové příručce Ústavu pro jazyk český a
našla jsem toto: http://prirucka.ujc.cas.cz/?slovo=viklat
Ale, třeba se mýlím.
Překvapuje mne, že když jsem si tento verš zadala na internet, tak na
jiných stránkách Bible je viklat s "y".

Ještě jednou děkuji za tuto aplikaci, kterou denně používám. S pozdravem

I don't know what has changed since I last tested installation of zips from
eBible repo but now java.util.zip.ZipFile does not recognise the zip files
as valid zips.

Apologies for taking a long time to look at the new eBible repo.  Here are
a couple of comments/questions.

Firstly I have tried adding the new eBible repo to And Bible and downloaded
a few modules without any problems but there were a few things I noticed
while testing.

1. Some of the language prefixes seem non-standard.
I have not seen modules with an underscore in them before e.g.
eng_web2015.  We don't normally prefix English modules with the language.
If we did then I think the standard, following SpaRV should be EngWEB2015.
And this seems inconsistent because there is also engBBE1964 in the eBible
repo.

2. .mod continuation error
I think that DM has already mentioned this.  The backslash implies the line
continues onto the next line.  However, the next line appears blank and
probably being removed by the parser and the following line is a new
property.  It might be fixed by ensuring the last line contains characters
and no backslash continuation character.
E.g.

CopyrightNotes=Хушхабар\
Portions of the Holy Bible in the Tajik language of Tajikistan\
removed several lines
For other uses, please contact the respective copyright owners.\
2014-04-02\

ShortCopyright=© 2010, 2014 Фонди «Калом»

I think that changing to the following style should fix this:

 I have used a bible reader app on an Android tablet that functionally
 works great as a 'reader', but the author/endorsements raise significant

 'reader' app (not a desktop application) for simply having the ability to
 have a 'pocket' bible (or several).

 I am a programming hobbyist, and would be interested in developing, or
 helping develop an Universal Windows Platform app for 8.1

 For those wondering what the main 'needs' would include, the ability to
 render a text size determined by user, on a full screen, with easy
 navigation by book, chapter, and verse drop downs, and/or searching by
 John 3:16 for example, offline.

I don't think this cron job is running automatically yet and I can see that
atleast recver.zip is missing.  Last time DM had to run it manually.

The biggest problem constantly reported to me is the offset Psalms in
French Bibles.

One e-mail from yesterday:

There some mistakes in the numbering of french version for ex the psam 135
is supposed to be psalm 136.you could check the psalms for mistake like
that. Check the FreSegond version for this kind of error.

Some French users are losing patience.  After explaining the use of an
alternate versification to a different user I received the following
response this morning:

Votre réponse et le lien sur lequel vous nous renvoyez ne nous donne aucune
solution,messieurs les développeurs, corrigez juste les chapitre et versets
contenant des erreurs, c'est là le bon choix et faites un effort, merci


If the only change was to use the standard chapter numbers for Psalms in
French Bibles this would make many French users happy.

 A version of the Bible in French by John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) was
 published in about 1885.

 I guess these 2 Bibles use their own versification schemes.

Based on user feedback it appears that the Psalms read out in the user's
church and in their printed Bibles have a different number to the Psalms in
FreSegond and FreCrampon.  I find that few, if any, Christians I
communicate with, outside of the Sword lists, are familiar with the
different versification systems.

However, I do not speak French nor go to a French church so it would be
useful if a French user could comment on this.

This is a significant issue for French users.  It is the single most
frequent complaint I receive.

[sword-devel] Best versification for FreSegond and FreCrampon

I have received a number of e-mails from French users asking why the Psalms
in FreSegond and FreCrampon are 'incorrect'.  Of course they only appear to
be incorrect to some users because they are unaccustomed to the Vulgate
versification used by these Bibles.

Could I ask for confirmation that we are using the best versification for
FreSegond and FreCrampon because it is confusing some French users.

Here are a few sample comments:

Le psaume 10 version Louis segond 1910 vulg sur l'application Android
smart phone ne correspond pas  par rapport à la version Louis segond 1910
sur ma bible papier cela entraîne un décalage sur tous les autres psaumes .
Sinon l'application est très utile .

j'ai remarqué que dans la Bible Louis Second, le Psaume 9 et le 10 ne
forment qu'un. A partir de là, les Psaumes sont décalés et ne correspondent
plus jusqu'au Psaume 148, il est constitué du verset 12 au verset 20 du
Psaume 147.

S'il vous plaît replacer les psaumes à leur chapitre pour la version Louis
segond(vulg)

Le psaume 119 a seulement 7 versets au lieu de 176 dans la version Louis
Second. Maj requise

I recently installed it on my new Samsung galaxy s4  and for Some reason,
the French Louis Second  and Crampon version have a shift in chapters.
For example psalm 110 in my paperback Bible or in the KJV on the app.
Correspond to psalm 109 in the French ones..  This never used to be the
case..  I interpret from my church using the app and it's confusing as I am
reading one chapter earlier.

Will the migration be done in such a way that front ends with a cached
mods.d.tar.gz will not generate errors?  So something like:

1. remove modules from avraw mods.tar.gz
2. add modules to raw mods.tar.gz
3. copy modules from avraw folders to raw folders
4. a month or so later remove modules from avraw
5. later after front ends have removed references to avraw folders remove
avraw folders and avraw/mods.tar.gz

Regarding (5) can avpackages/rawzip and avraw/mods.tar.gz be left in place
for a while, even when empty, otherwise JSword apps (I don't know about
Sword apps) which reference these may throw errors.

Are zip files automatically generated in packages/rawzip - I have never
noticed any missing zips there like I have in avpackages/rawzip?

Currently And Bible notes and bookmarks are stored locally but I have had a
lot of requests to be able to sync them with other Sword apps.

It would be good to have an architecture such as Dropbox that allowed sync
between different platforms.  Somebody suggested EverNote to me but Dropbox
looks good.

There is an ant build.xml in the jsword-tweaks project I use to build
jsword with tweaks.  The ant file merges all of the pre-av11n jsword files
with the tweaks files and creates the jars in the And Bible project.

You may also notice a jsword fork in my github account but this is for
future use.

Every so often I have attempted to feed various tweaks back into jsword,
but some are a bit hacky and need more work before being pushed back.

All the above advice is correct and I regularly install modules to
sdcard/jsword as in the FAQ that  Matěj pointed you to, but you do need to
restart And Bible in order to pick up the modules.

Which module are you trying and failing to load?  Could you make it

Hi David,

Each TTS voice is specific to a language and country(accent).  And Bible
requests a voice for the language of the module and also tries to work out
the best country (accent).

So, you could load an English bible and press Speak which will use Amy,
then switch to a German bible and press speak to hear Hans.

However, there is a TTS bug in this area.  If you try to switch language
while the previous language is speaking it gets confused and continues
speaking in the first language.

he confirmed they are fine for use in countries other than Egypt.

However, there are no short names so he has agreed to enter them for us.

I am no authority but the ISV seems quite good to me, somewhere between ESV
and GodsWord in it's approach.

[sword-devel] Problems in new WEBBE and WEBME but not WEB

Hi,

In the new WEBBE and WEBME using Bible Desktop and And Bible there are a
lot of \wj* and \wj strings.  The following example is taken from Matthew
24 verse 1
 buildings of the temple. \wj*  2But he answered them
and there are 1 or 2 of the above strings in every verse of Matt 24.  I
have not noticed any in Old Testament books but haven't looked hard.

seems to have started displaying correctly on And Bible but I don't know
why.

I tried various things this evening i) manually installing directly from
sword/raw instead of rawzip but the display was still incorrect ii)
specifying specific Latvian fonts and the display was still wrong iii) at
some point I restarted and the display improved iv) removed the Latvian
fonts and restarted and then the display was perfect.

I will ask a Latvian user to take a look.

 PS. One further difference I just spotted is that milestones were used for
 chapter elements.
 They weren't as far as I could tell for version 1.3

 This change is not textual, so it would not have affected display of
 characters.

AndBible has always been able to display Psalm 119, even on low powered
devices, and many people say that, far from being slow, it is very
responsive.  I can only think that Greg was getting confused with some other

 biennial Bible Translation conference. While there I had a chance to
 sit in on a talk being given about the uses of Pathway, its purposes
 and its aid to the WBT community. Afterwards I got to speak with Greg
 Trihus, who is the lead of that project about the absence of SWORD
 export.  His comments were quite illuminating.

 The real thrust of the Pathway project is getting the scriptures into
 an electronic form that is useful for distribution on mobile devices
 or for print.  As such they support GoBible for low-end machines,
 E-Book and Logos for smart phones, ODT for to-print media and PDF to
 cover all of the above.  Several people in the discussion asked about
 getting the scriptures into a form where they could directly enter a
 scripture reference rather than having to scroll through an ebook or
 PDF on a smartphone (the Logos option supports that, but involves
 several more steps for the content author who needs to pass the file
 through the hands of several people at SIL and then on to Logos so the
 work can be hosted in the official Logos content system). Greg told me
 that he had considered the Android mobile options - since many of the
 target people with smart phones would be Android users - but when he
 had tested AndBible it had been woefully slow and had even crashed
 when opening longer passages like Psalms 119. Therefore he had avoided
 putting his own human resources onto developing a SWORD format
 exporter and was not advertising that through the Pathway project. He
 did leave me with a few action points which he would love to see:

 1) Since Pathway is open source, he would welcome anyone from our
 community who wanted to develop a Paratext/Fieldworks - SWORD
 converter. The export is done through an XHTML/CSS pathway, and they
 are supporting any form of output, not just scriptures. This would
 include commentaries, dictionaries and general papers/books. Pathway
 is written in C#, so if there are any C# developers around looking for
 something to do, this would be a highly desired project which wouldn't
 be another Just write a front-end in my language because I want to
 contribution to both world-wide scripture distribution and CrossWire.

 2) Improve the quality of AndBible (JSword based?) and/or Bishop

 bindings). There is a round-about way that SIL can publish these

 strong desire to see SWORD formats supported due to our ability to

 world are also hoping to eventually support mobile versions of
 BibleTime, but the time frame for those is definitely long term since
 it would involve a major refactoring effort on BT to separate the
 backend code from the GUI portions before any work could begin on a
 mobile UI based on Qt.

 3) Help with the C# bindings for SWORD. I know some people have talked
 about them in the past, but I don't know what state they might be in.
 Since Pathway is written in C#, it would be a great help to anyone
 writing a SWORD export path if they could access the engine bindings
 directly through C# rather than having to dump to a file and somehow

 This is quite a common occurrence.

 CrossWire has two versions of the Latvian NT module.
 CrossWire Main includes v1.1
 CrossWire Beta includes v1.3

 The conf file for the latter includes:

 Version=1.3
 History_1.3=minor spacing cleanup and tagging of references
 History_1.2=fixed encoding, moved to OSIS source
 History_1.1=compressed module

 The above history shows that a possible explanation is that you may be
 have been using v1.1 that had incorrect encoding. So next step is for you 
 to
 install v1.3 from the Beta repository.

 If that works, then we should look at moving v1.3 from Beta to Main
 asap.

[sword-devel] How to represent special characters in osisID attributes in a gen book

In gen books it seems that the osisID is normally used as the chapter title
e.g.
div type=chapter osisID=Chapter 1

However some chapter titles can contain special characters e.g.
div type=chapter osisID=God's Sovereignty
contains an apostrophe.

I thought that, being an xml attribute, it should be:
div type=chapter osisID=Godapos;s Sovereignty
but that gives the error:
The value 'God's Sovereignty' of attribute 'osisID' on element 'div' is
not valid with respect to its type, 'osisIDType'.

So how should a chapter title of God's Sovereignty be represented?

The release notes include more fonts for displaying more Asian language
scripts but which fonts did you use for which languages - I have been doing

difficult for me to answer.  Can somebody help?
Here is the relevant part of the e-mail:

...I think I've found a mistake within Strong's Greek Dictionary itself,
which - I assume - must be in the original?  It is this:

Acts 1:13 mentions Matthew, giving Strongs 03156 as Matthaios, a shorter
form of 3164; Matthaeus (i.e. Matthitjah)...

BUT, 3164 is machomai, middle voice of an apparently primary verb; to
war..., whereas 03161 (Mattathias) seems closest to Matthaeus, and the
Hebrew origin it refers to (4993, Matthitjah) is Mattithyah.

I have asked a Russian user to look at it and he and a Russian pastor think
it looks okay but he is going to give more feedback in 2 weeks.  Are the
differences documented anywhere so I can tell my contact of possible problem
areas to check?

I don't have (deliberately haven't enabled) detailed stats of users but I
can see a breakdown of by country/language - top 10 only.  Russian used to
be in the middle somewhere but now it has dropped off the bottom so I have
no record of Russian users.
One reason we appear to have lost users might be the dynamic nature apps are
installed/uninstalled on mobiles and mobiles upgraded fairly frequently
compared to pcs.

 making the avraw repo available to And Bible users. Since the book order,
 chapter counts,  verse counts are all radically different in the Synodal
 v11n (relative to the KJV), the correspondence between verse number (as

I was using the conf file property
   Feature=StrongsNumbers
to determine if a book contains Strong's numbers, but I have noticed that
OSMHB does not contain the above property but does contain Strong's numbers
and does have the following property:
   GlobalOptionFilter=OSISStrongs

Is this a mistake in osmhb.conf or perhaps I should be using
   GlobalOptionFilter=OSISStrongs
to determine if a book contains Strong's numbers?

Hi,

I recently included Gill from the Xiphos repo in the And Bible download
list.  When trying to view Gill's commentary for large books like Isaiah And
Bible throws an out of memory error because mobiles have limited memory.  I
believe this memory error might disappear if the block type of Gill could be
changed to chapter (like jfb) instead of book.

From an Android perspective this would be tricky because the Android
framework specifies that locale specific directories are integrated in a
specific structure within each Android application and Android App Market
also analyses the application structure to highlight which languages an app
has been localised for.

Applying and distributing localisations has not been an issue so far for And
Bible partly because there are releases every month or two but also,
possibly, because a pre-release notification seems to prompt translators to
update or contribute translations.

Yes we have the full book names in
BibleNames_*.propertieshttp://www.crosswire.org/svn/jsword/trunk/jsword/src/main/resources/org/crosswire/jsword/versification/so
somebody could possibly guesstimate reasonable abbreviated book names
from the full book names.  There is the possibility of initially merely
using the guesstimates in And Bible until they were proven by a public
release and then pushing them back up to (J)Sword depending on how confident
people felt.

Looking through them again I think it would be possible to guess most
abbreviations and it may well be that there is no agreed abbreviation anyway
e.g. there are various acceptable abbreviations for Philippians, 2
Corinthians, etc. so our guesstimates might be considered valid.  On
consideration it would probably make more sense to manually guesstimate
abbreviations than to attempt to automate abbreviations in code.  Thai and
Ukranian could pose challenges but should be doable with a bit of guesswork.

Hi,

So it looks like we can get a couple more sets of abbreviated book names
from BPBible and I think if I ask a couple of recent contributors they may
be able to translate cs, fi, ru but there will still be a lot of languages
without short names.  I wouldn't like to disable grid navigation for those
languages.

I have thought about using the first three characters of the full name
excluding spaces, which (as a test) would work fine in English but I have
reservations regarding languages like Arabic and Hebrew.  Could anybody who
knows more about languages comment whether taking the first few characters
would be acceptable?  One advantage is that the book names will appear in
order so if some book names look similar or aren't perfect it should still
be possible to differentiate by order e.g. Philemon  Philippians.

No short names: af, ar_EG, bg, da, es, he, id, it, la, lt, nl, no, pl,
pt_BR, ro, sk, sl, sv, th, uk,
BP: fr, hu, pt
Translators: cs, fi, ru
Short names: de, en, et, fa, in,  ko, vi, zh_CN, zh, nb, nn

  is easier to control them if they are just in BPBible...)

[sword-devel] Is Delitzsch Hebrew NT available?

While working on Hebrew bible display in And Bible an Israeli contact asked
if the Delitzsch Hebrew NT is available.  I can't see anything in the
CrossWire Sword modules nor in the Xiphos module list so I thought I would
ask.

Excuse me for being pure Java and not knowing Sword C++ at all but can I add
(perhaps obviously) that an XSLT framework will perform noticeably slower
than a SAX-like framework.

some performance comparisons.  They are old and Java-centric and so XSLT
performance may have improved but these tests show that in the worst case
XSLT was 3 times slower than SAX and a good SAX processor was twice as fast
as a good XSLT processor.  If pages are parsed at the chapter level then
users may notice a delay turning pages on smaller machines like mobile
phones.

Hi,

I must confess that to make JSword perform a little better and due to lack
of xslt support on early versions of Android I tweaked jsword OSIS
processing so as to use OSIS XML - SAX processor - HTML.  I thus removed
jdom and xslt.  I realise there are various arguments for using jdom and
xslt but performance was my main driver on such small, low powered mobile
phones.

I may switch back to using xslt in the future because there is a lot of
logic in the xslt stylesheet that was difficult to reproduce in SAX.  Also,
now, I think I may have been able to get xslt going on old Android s/w but
am putting my effort into other areas.

Jdom may add too much overhead for such intense processing on small devices
although it works great on pcs.

[sword-devel] Missing Lang=en in tdavid.conf

Hi,

I am not sure what the process of fixing or amending modules is but I
thought I would mention that tdavid.conf has no language specified i.e.
there is a missing:

Lang=en

The affect of this is that Treasury of David may possibly not be shown for
download by programs that filter downloads by language.

Hi Matthew,

You can find the bible for Android that uses JSword at
http://code.google.com/p/and-bible/.  There was another bible for Android
based on Sword called Bishop and it appears that Gary at CrossConnect has
continued development of that code and has a beta release but I don't really
know much about that.

I use an old G1 which is a very low spec mobile and it runs fine.  I used to
have Android 1.6 but upgraded to 2.2 and both versions were fine.  The bible
has not yet been put on App Market so that is why you can't find it there.

It would be useful if you could give feedback regarding how the Chinese
bibles work on the Android bible s/w.  I did install a Chinese module but
can't read Chinese.  Also if you do some testing on and-bible can you raise
(or fix) any issues.

Some people contribute ui translations to and-bible by translating
strings.xml and arrays.xml.  Thomas has proposed doing a translation of all
languages using a Google tool but I don't know how well the Google tool
would handle Chinese, so it would be good to have a manual translation of
the ui in Chinese.

There does not seem to be a Mongolian bible available on CrossWire but you
may be able to help out in that respect.  There are a few comments regarding
a potential Mongolian bible here:

Mongolian bible available for download so that could be an area you could
help out.  David Haslam seems to have looked into this.

 presently runs Android 2.1.

Hi Peter,

Yes, this is a bit frustrating but this is not something I personally had
planned to work on, partly because I don't have much experience in that area
and partly because any work would hopefully soon be superseded by
improvements in Android font support.  Google seem to be improving font
support in each release.

If anybody feels like working in this area then I can support them wrt
integration with and-bible but I am currently busy working in other areas of
and-bible.

Also C++/JNI requires use of the Android NDK which only generates code
for ARMv5
or ARMv7-A architectures (see
http://developer.android.com/sdk/ndk/index.html) so not all Android devices
would be supported.

is not doing as much html processing/formatting as and-bible.  I thought
about switching to the C++ libs but there are various h/w

understand the Sword C++ code anymore and it seems from Troy's e-mails that
the packaged ndk lib would need a fair bit more work.  Jsword also needs

use C++ then feel free to continue Bishop or branch and-bible, but I always
planned to create a pure java bible and JSword gave me a really good start.

Maybe the git idea is a good one and can be put on the list.  What do others
think?  I chose svn because I thought most developers would be familiar with
it and it has great eclipse integration.  Personally I have to use PVCS and
Clearcase at work so even svn provided challenges for me.  Nic recently
transferred PocketSword to Mercurial and seemed very happy.  However, as
everybody keeps commenting there is a whole load of functionality in
and-bible that is missing and that needs improvement so maybe I should keep
my head down and not be distracted.

I am on holiday at the moment so don't expect any new releases for a while.
Why am I typing e-mails while I am on holiday!!!

btw I just want to share we just heard that my eldest daughter got 5xA* 4xA
and a B in her GCSEs - the holiday begins.

 For an example of why this would be helpful, I have some libsword swig
 bindings for Ruby that never got committed because no one who was a commiter
 had the time or inclination to step up and look at them.  If I could have
 forked the swig bindings, and checked in my changes, then whether or not
 they became incorporated in the official version, they would be readily
 available for anyone to find, evaluate and/or fix.
